In Latino culture, one traditionally has two last names, their father’s surname followed by their mother’s. That (and not a fake birth certificate etc) is why he went by David Ortiz Arias at an earlier point in his career. Thus, his mom’s last name was Arias. Unfortunately, she died in a car crash in the Dominican a few years ago. (Most of this I learned from some book about the Sox, and my mom explained the two last names thing)
All seriousness aside, this is pretty amusing.
