Game 121: Sox, Yanks: Doesn't get worse than that
Yankees vs Red Sox recap
Yankees vs Red Sox boxscore
That was one of the worst games you'll ever seen played (by the Boston Red Sox).
The linescore tells the story, really. Twenty runs. Twenty-three hits. Brad Penny was bad, bad, bad. Michael Bowden was bad, bad. And Ramon Ramirez was bad.
It's a game you want to forget about, but you just can't.
On a good note: the offense wasn't bad. But on a night when you needed to score 20 to just tie the game, 11 runs is just crap. Mike Lowell had three hits, including a home run, and Jason Varitek also had a dinger.
At this point, you can curse, you can hit something, you can break something, but all I really want to do is laugh. What else is there to do? The Sox went into this game the underdogs with Penny on the hill. While a 8-6 game would have been a bit more manageable, what's the real difference between that and a 20-11 game? At least the offense's stats are padded a tad.
Luckily for the Sox, the remaining two games against the Yanks in this series are a bit better in terms of pitching matchups.
Junichi Tazawa -- Godspeed, my friend.
(PS: if anyone wants a shoulder to cry on, I can't give you that. But you can post a comment before you jump off the bridge.)

Man, sucked to be Bowden in that situation
He really should have been brought in at the start of an inning.

It wouldn't have made any difference
Bowden sucked worse than Penny last night.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Note to self:
Run stuff by the boss before posting it.
Also, the offense wasn’t really good. The MFY pitchers probably weren’t throwing their best stuff, and were just trying to get through the rest of the game. And I’d rather the offense not get the stats for this game – it’s unfair to credit them for something that should not have happened.

This is actually easier to deal with...
…than a close or competitive game characterized by good pitching and offensive failure. Even assuming that the Yanks were throwing strikes in an attempt to close out the game (which was likely the case) the offense showed enough here – particularly since the Sox effectively conceded the game when Green, Kotch and Rocco made their appearances. Brad Penny is just currently a bad, bad, bad pitcher, and the Yankee offense is too dangerous to chuck fastball after fastball at them and hope for the best. I hoped it wouldn’t happen, but I’m unsurprised that it did.
The simple fact of the matter is that the back end of the rotation is inadequate against tough offensive clubs (although Taz may/should improve with seasoning). The upside is that the front end of the rotation (the optimistically labelled Playoff Rotation) is strong; and our early season pitching depth and our minor league organization is keeping us from pulling fans out of the stands to pitch starts 4 and 5. The further upside is that we’ve reached the twilight of Penny’s day with the Sox – playoffs or no.
Bottom line: Cartoon Fail to the point where I expected Roger Rabbit to klop Pedroia or Lowell over the head with a giant mallet, but so cartoonish that its not devastating. They call it “a laugher” for a reason.

Is it me or.................
Is it me or did Tito throw in the towel on this game or not? Is a 5 run deficit a reason to give up? Yes, Penny was awful. Anybody with only one pitch sucks. But why not try to stay close and see if the bats come alive? Damn, it’s not against the rules to use your bullpen guys 2 or 3 days in a row. Might have been a different game if he yanked Bowden as soon as he saw he had the nothing. If I wasn’t sitting on my recliner here at home in Tampa and had shelled out the big bucks to attend the game, I’d be way more pissed then I am now. Come to think of it, I did shell out big bucks for Extra Innings on Directv.
Or you could argue...

That he held out as long as he could. Yeah, that ain’t good…

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times....
Brad Penny sucks! Why do we still start him?? It confuses the hell out of me! Jumping off of a bridge now…
They should have left Penny in the entire game
until his arm completely fell off. Then released him right after the final out.

The Front Office sucks.
Masterson’s pitching for the Tribe – who need and appreciate him. Nothing says FAIL more than trying to out-Steinbrenner the Yankees. If YOU don’t HAVE 500 million in spare change,
quit trying to purchase “veteran talent” – as you’re only getting worn-out has-beens.
As the Vikings will learn, a 42 year old “veteran” doesn’t have what he did at 26 or 30.
Mile Lowell is pissed at Mike Lowell, as he could have been on first base if he had his wheels of old. Damn good hit, gunned-down by young arms and old legs.
I don’t fault Mike, as it’s just the wages of time, or the organization as Lowell provides good value for his contract. But when it comes to Penny, Smoltz, Dice-K?
Dudes, put down the pipe, you need to leave the rock alone when you’re making player decisions.
Oh, and guys? Leave Bowden alone. That’s like blaming a private, fresh from bootcamp for losing a battle. He came in when the village was already burning. Bard and a 101 fastball may have had a different result – or Masterson, and that up-and-in slider at 96 heading back for your face. IF EVER there was a time for Wakefield to come into a game,
it was 2nd inning last night, when they were dialed-in on fastballs.
Bowden's been really lucky in the minors this year, and his stuff is now crap.

I'm not...
picking on Bowden but he isn’t ready for the big leagues yet and throwing him into that situation did him no good.
As for Penny, like I said in the game thread, I’d perfer to just give him the Blood Eagle and leave him bleed out/suffocate behind Yawkey Way.
Oh and to make matters worse I wasn’t at home (Brockton, MA) watching this game, I was in Lake George, NY watching it with the Yankee commentators on their stupid network. I understand when it’s that teams broadcast there will be biase but this was to the point of idiocy and ridiculousness. Michael Kay, I’d like to set you on fire.
