Who thinks we're going to the post season?

Star-divide

It's not looking very good right now. No pitching and an inconsistent offense. If we do make it to the post season it will more than likely be as the AL wild card because catching the Yankees is doubtful at this point. That's going to mean no home field advantage except in the World Series and we haven't been playing well on the road this year. Our batters are terrible against ace pitching; look at what Halliday did to us right after the all star break, look at what Burnett and Sabathia did to us at Yankee Stadium last week, and look at what Verlander did to us the other day at Fenway. We took a big gamble by getting two washed up pitchers for cheap and they both failed miserably. I'm obviously talking about Smoltz and Penny. And as I said in a past post we don't have a true super star on our team. We have some really good players and a few that were voted into the All Star game, but I'm talking about a player that can carry a team on his shoulders when we hit a rough patch. Manny and Ortiz were able to do that. Nomar could do that in his hey day. Even pitchers like Clemmons and Pedro could do it to some degree. I'm just not seeing anyone on the roster with the ability to do that. Maybe Youk can do it when he returns from his suspension. Him charging the mound was a great spark.

Pitching is obviuously our biggest problem and I think that will be the cause if we don't make the post season. When three fifths of your starters have the chance to get chased early that is not the winning ingredient for  a championship team.

At least we have 25 of our final 45 games at home with a four game series against the Indians at Fenway to end the season. That could play into our hands if it comes down to the wire.

In the end their needs to be some major changes done to the roster in the off season regardless of if or not we make the post season. I think Varitek, Lowell, and Drew need to go away as much as I like all three of them, but age and injuries have taken their toll on those guys all season long. SS needs to be addressed. Lowerie is not the answer and I was saying that last year. I think we need to find a bigger name with a better bat at shortstop.

I'm hoping for the best. Get well soon, Rem Dog.

We won't be in the playoffs

And if we are, the whole AL must have collapsed.

I didn't like the old one very much. I didn't see the ball there very well. - Julio Lugo on the old Yankees Stadium.

... We're the third best team in the AL by most metrics...

And we’re only 0.5 games back of the wild card while playing badly – we WILL come out of this slump and will make the playoffs.

Don't worry too hard about the angels if we make the playoffs.

I don’t think their starters are great, especially in a short series. Plus, they have a poor postseason record in Fenway.

I still think we will be

Wake will be back and Dice-K is re doing spring training to build up his arm to what it should have been if he didn’t play the WBC. I would say that Beckett and Lester do a pretty damned good job at trying single handedly to win games, they can’t because it does in fact take an entire team to win a game, not just a superstar. You can’t look at less than a whole season of a short stop and say he isn’t the answer. I think you are overlooking that pretty much ALL pitching staffs in baseball have 2 or 3 starters that can get chased pretty easily. The Yankees have several starters that are pretty “chaseable” Joba, Pettite, Mitre, Gaudin or Hughes. The fact that we have 2 pitchers right now we can trust day in and day out is something you aren’t appreciating at all.

I think you are also over estimating the size of our payroll, as you have every post where you say we need to overhaul the team. We have a lot of young players we are going to want to hold onto that are going to cost us a lot of money over the next few years, as well as the fact that there aren’t going to be many good players hitting free agency this year. There isn’t a single 3B on the list that I would take over Lowell except maybe Chone Figgins and he doesn’t get on base enough for this team. There aren’t any decent catchers available either (there may be one next year though). Nick Johnson might be available but I don’t really see him as a starter for us at 1B. Matt Holiday might become a free agent but if I were the Cards I would never let him go and he even isn’t the OMG SUPERSTAR type of player either. Abreu becomes available and is really the only intriguing positional player I see becoming available unless the Padres lower their demands for AGonz. There are also a couple decent starting pitchers available but none that would probably meet your stringent standards for starters.

It isn’t helpful to say we should get rid of Tek, Drew and Lowell. That’s like me saying I think we should get rid of 75bandwagon from the Sox fan base. It feels good to say it but then it just leaves a black hole of nothingness to be annoyed at. Who do YOU want to replace those veteran players? Other crappy veterans? OR do you want us to trade the farm and become the Yankees circa mid 2000s with a bunch of over paid vets who have bigger egos than bats?

Let's call it convenience...

I don’t have to bother checking the score. I can tell if the Sox have won or lost based on whether or not 75bandwagon has posted or not.

*Raises hand*

Penny and Smoltz were supposed to be fighting Buchholz, Bowden, and Tazawa for the 5th spot in the rotation, not filling the #3-4 spots – give them (and the Front Office) a break there.
Also, “Clemmons” and “Lowerie”? Aside from the spelling issues, we don’t have a “superstar” because MOST of the team would be superstars on any other team.
Lowrie was almost exactly an average SS last year, both offensively and defensively, with a broken wrist. I’m not sure how you can think he’s not going to be good. And asking for a better bat than what Lowrie projects to be is just plain unrealistic – we’re not getting Hanley without giving up a HUGE package of prospects. Hardy might be available, but I’m not willing to fight other teams’ offers for him this offseason.

Hardy was so good this year he got demoted… oh wait…

It would be so much better if 75 actually posted whole solutions. Its so easy to say Lowell, Drew and Tek should go. But where? And who replaces them?

That's easy

Evan Longoria, Matt Kemp and Joe Mauer replace those three. Ryan Howard becomes the DH, and Johan Santana, Roy Halladay, and Matt Cain anchor the rotation. Get it done Theo!!!!1

That'll be hard to do.

We might have to give up Buchholz to get all those guys.

Forget all that

Let’s just clone Pujols and teach him all the positions. I bet he could pitch too!

Hardy's going to be good, but everyone's going to be going after him...

with the exception of a few teams who are already set at SS. He’s going to be highly sought after, and it’d cost more than signing a free agent because he’s near arbitration and we’d be losing at least one very good prospect who would be able to give us cheap production.

We will be in the playoffs

Texas has an insane road trip ahead, Seattle, Rays, and NY on the road, not to mention the Angels again.

Wake will be back as will Dice-K, but the most important stat is that the Sox have like 28 of their last 41 at home where they dominate.

Its not yet time to call it a season.

P.S. Once the playoffs start, we still have Josh Beckett and everyone else does not. Yankees cannot be our ALDS opponent so its either the Angels or the Tigers or White Sox. You guys really believe the Red Sox cant beat the Angels, Tigers and White Sox in a short series with Josh Beckett on the hill?

Come ON!!! Rally up people, its just a slump….

by SoxAcumen on Aug 17, 2009 3:10 PM EDT reply actions

It just shows

who became a fan in 04 when people say were out of it. theres still 41 games left. we need to win one freakin game and texas needs to loose one not that hard. Yes were slumping but weve been here before. I think that we will make the playoffs, with the wildcard.

The only thing im questioning is what the heck Theo is doing? he should of went and got roy halladay when he had the chance. Looking foward you know the yankees will stop at nothing to get him if he hits the market. then brining alex back? we need an outfielder to ride the bench and someone besides beckett and lester to step up starting pitching!

It scares me that theo may have gone into panic mode, and although we will prob. make the wildcard this year he needs to focus on making this team metter next year.

Also 75 what the heck are we going to do with drew? who would want his contract?

by Beantownbeamer15 on Aug 17, 2009 3:36 PM EDT reply actions

O! Me! I'll take his contract!

I’d willingly spend the next two years jogging across right field and not moving the bat at the plate. I’ll even show TONS of emotion, and dive for every sinking liner (triples be damned!). I’d totally be worth the $14 million!

it's as simple as this...

They need a big bat in the lineup. I was thinking get rid or Ortiz and Lowell and some minor leaguers and go after Adrian Gonzalez, They’re missing that big home-run that Papi used to give them late in the games in ‘04. They are going to win the wild card but other than that, we can’t say what’s going to happen in post season. I’ve been waiting all season for A.J. Burnett to get injured and it hasn’t happened. As soon as that were to happen, the Yankees would fall apart and that would be it for them. It hasn’t happened but who knows…there’s still some time left.

Relatively cool weather.

And 7 teams will lose series of games.
Beyond that?

by bdalebs on Aug 18, 2009 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

There will be

at least 1 run scored. minimum. And somebody will throw at least 27 pitches in a game. Promise.

Including IBB's?

I’ve pitched games in a video game where I IBB’d 3 straight batters, and then got the next guy to hit into a triple play in 9 straight innings. Just need a blazing fastball with great control and an eephus. :)
