Around SBN: In Crunch Time, Spurs Don't Change Their Game

Overflow thread: Tigers @ Red Sox -- August 11

A brawl, a couple bombs from Lowell, and a rookie with a nice start. All capped by a rain delay. Quite the game so far.

Why not?

Someone’s going to have to leave when we get healthy – Saito’s probably a waiver trade candidate.

So, what did I miss?

Did Porcello really take down Youk, or was it a momentum thing?

You see Klaw?

Seems he thinks Youk was a big baby. I think he’s disappointed that he didn’t get to see Porcello pitch a gem.

Manny ain't the only bad man.

by tommy.otm on Aug 11, 2009 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions

What gem?

Porcello is on a strict pitch count. He’d almost have to be perfect to go 6 innings.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Aug 11, 2009 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Here's his quote -
Porcello looked like he was in for a dominant outing, sitting 91-94 with great sinking life, and had a three-run lead.

He had a win in his sights…

August 1, Porcello threw 8 innings, 4 hits, one run. Sure, it was Cleveland, but the way we’ve been “hitting”…

Manny ain't the only bad man.

by tommy.otm on Aug 11, 2009 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions

If Porcello was dominant (which is hard to say after 1 inning)

He shouldn’t be throwing at the other team.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Exactly.

Porcello threw a two-seamer

I just think that if you send a messege, you throw a 4-seamer…Youk was pissed from last night, was too afraid of the black man and decided to go after Porcello. Youk is a punk and got slammed. Dont give me this momentum stuff, the freaking guy threw his helmet at Porcello, what a bitch…Dont get slammed Youk

by joem21 on Aug 11, 2009 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Porcello threw a two-seamer AT YOUK

Maybe he was trying to avoid getting tossed, but that was the second straight batter who had a 0-0 pitch come in on their ribs. You don’t get the benefit of the doubt there.

by Ben Buchanan on Aug 11, 2009 11:20 PM EDT up reply actions

WTF?

From what I’ve seen from photos, Porcello moved off the mound when Youk was throwing his helmet, and Youk had to change directions and ran straight into his arms.

Don’t even bring up the race card – that’s just stupid here. Why would you be as pissed from the first HBP as you were by the second one?

by bdalebs on Aug 11, 2009 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Youk was cussing

under his breath the entire way down 1st base last night…he was pissed, but didn’t want to go after Jackson…and im sure Porcello was trying to get tossed in the 2nd inning. your giving excuses for why he got slammed which is hilarious in itself..throw fists if your going to charge the mound, not helmets cool guy

by joem21 on Aug 11, 2009 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Because he's ALWAYS mad.

But that was just one HBP, and it didn’t seem like they were intending to hurt someone. But when he was thrown at AGAIN, then he finally lost it and decided not to let pitchers get away with pulling this shit. Porcello threw at two of our best players, BACK TO BACK, after y’all lost a player because of a bad pitch that had no possibility of being intentional.

And we’re going to defend Youk’s honor because he plays hard no matter what and does everything he can to win. He threw the helmet because he couldn’t get to Porcello fast enough – mostly because he was running away.

by bdalebs on Aug 11, 2009 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions

So he gets hit once and doesn't charge,

then gets hit again and charges. What’s your point?

And watch the replay again. Youk lunged, they went down together and rolled. If anything I’d be concerned about lil’ Ricky’s arm, he seemed to go down on it pretty hard.

Manny ain't the only bad man.

by tommy.otm on Aug 11, 2009 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, crap.

That would honestly suck if it hurt Porcello’s arm. If I was Youk, that’s when you go and apologize for snapping.

Perhaps Law missed the precedent setting throw @ Youkilis yesterday after an unintentional HBP on Martinez

Or maybe he missed the 1st time he threw at Martinez.
Or maybe he missed the fact that it was a fastball almost behind him in the ribs.

No way the Sox were throwing at Cabrera

You have to pitch inside. Youk got hit yesterday, and today Porcello threw at VMart before beaning Youk.

Yeah, I just like how nobody seems to make that intentional/not distinction anymore. Our team does.

I’ve not once seen us retaliate for something we didn’t think was intentional, and we’ve got Headhunter Beckett

by Ben Buchanan on Aug 11, 2009 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't really think of Beckett as a headhunter.

It always seems like he pitches in games where he’s “supposed” to hit someone and doesn’t. But he still gets into the hitter’s head.

Gammons talked about this a bit

He said it was obvious that the Tazawa HBP was unintentional and that, even if the Tigers thought it wasn’t, the “message was sent” when Porcello threw at VMart.

When you throw at two batters in a row, and at the same hitter two days in a row, in response to an unintentional HBP, you are asking for even more trouble.

Youk is already known to have a temper. It shouldn’t be surprising he thought that HBP was unwarranted.

by RickD on Aug 11, 2009 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the only thing that was wrong in the whole thing was Youk

throwing his helmet. I thought the charging was justified and to me as a Sox fan, finally someone showed up like they cared about winning.

by SoxAcumen on Aug 11, 2009 11:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm fine with the helmet throw.

by bdalebs on Aug 11, 2009 11:50 PM EDT up reply actions

agree with that

a ball thrown at somebody will do a lot more damage than a helmet thrown. It’s not like Youk threw his bat. I think it would be hard to hurt somebody throwing a batting helmet at him. They’re not that heavy and they’re built to absorb contact.

by RickD on Aug 11, 2009 11:53 PM EDT up reply actions

nobody is "unbiased"

But Gammons has been around for 40 years and knows the game as well as anybody. He thinks that Youk shouldn’t have charged the mound, but that throwing at Youk after throwing at VMart when the first HBP was unintentional? A bit much.

Just realized: Thursday's a day game.

So if you saved him up tonight, and used him Wednesday, you wouldn’t be able to use him on Thursday.

This way you can still get three Paps appearance in this series.

TB down, 3-0

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Angels take the Rays series very serious

Angel fans consider the Rays their little brothers that need a beating. I would not be surprised if they sweep this series from the Rays.

That would be nice.

Does that make him mentally challenged?

Would explain a lot.

Disclaimer: None of this is meant as an insult to mentally handicapped individuals, and if it appears offensive, maybe you need to see a dermatologist because you’ve got some pretty damn thin skin.

Exactly.

I’d put Span in the leadoff spot of my All-OF lineup.

by bdalebs on Aug 11, 2009 11:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Minessota fans weird me out

Talk of Morneau for MVP because he “does more than guys like Zobrist and Youkilis with less talent in front of him”

Denard Span and Joe Mauer bat in front of him. That’s like a .400 OBP on average.

So, we've got the Tampa schools covered...

The Minny schools covered… What other young fanbases do we have frontline reporters in?

by bdalebs on Aug 12, 2009 12:02 AM EDT up reply actions

University of Wisconsin - Madison, actually.

It’s just that Minn. residents get really cheap tuition and show up in droves.

I meant their market.

Isn’t that ltrain2’s school too? Maybe y’all have seen each other.

by bdalebs on Aug 12, 2009 12:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Naw, nevermind. He goes to Milwaukee.

I’ve only been there once for a Celtics game.

Argh. I gotta go back in a couple weeks. I should’ve caught another Sox game while I was still home. =(

by Ben Buchanan on Aug 12, 2009 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Ah, Milwaukee.

Wrong M campus. Still, kinda weird to be going to the same university.

by bdalebs on Aug 12, 2009 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Yup

Especially given I ended up there of all places coming from Mass.

by Ben Buchanan on Aug 12, 2009 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Wow. A win streak.

I’d forgotten what that looked like. . . .

yes it is nice

We need to rattle off about 20 in a row and watch the Yankees wilt out West

Winning streak

Tazawa gets the win.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Aug 11, 2009 11:43 PM EDT reply actions

I really like Tazawa

he definately has had a wild first 3 days in the majors. 1st appearance v. Japanese legend Matsui, A-Rod’s bomb in the 15th inning, errors in his 1st start, FIGHT!, looking good for 4 innings.

WOW! crazy.

Hope he's not calling friends back home and being like:

“Holy $#!+, do NOT come over here. They’re F’n insane.”

Of course, the Japanese always have a better way with words than us Americans.

Probably not what Leyland wanted.

He’s at least a more intelligible, readable troll. He tends to make an actual point between bits of calling Youkilis a scared racist bitch.

I like Law when it comes to evaluating amateur talent

But let’s be honest, he loves antagonizing anything and everything he doesn’t agree with.

by South Coast Ghost on Aug 12, 2009 12:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah.

I asked him when he started watching the game, and this was his reply:

by bdalebs on Aug 12, 2009 12:29 AM EDT up reply actions

But he's yet to reply to my follow up question:

@keithlaw Oh. Did you notice that Miggy’s HBP could not have been intentional? Game situation made it impossible.

by bdalebs on Aug 12, 2009 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Kinda looking like he's off for the night.

Hope he doesn’t think I was insulting him – I just wanted to know how familiar he was with the situation.

by bdalebs on Aug 12, 2009 12:34 AM EDT up reply actions

I just don't understand how someone watching the same scenario I watched

Can think Youk was not largely justified.

Youk was intentionally hit yesterday after what was likely an unintentional HBP. Not necessarily, but likely not intentional.

Today, we have what is DEFINITELY unintentional. A ball that just nabs his hand when he was starting to swing on an 0-2 count with runners on in the 1st.

Then they throw at V-Mart 0-0
The very next batter, 0-0, drilled in the ribs.
