despite the lack of walks, not being too good a runner, and durability concerns, Guzy’s still a good hitter. He probably wouldn’t be a very good fit on the Sox, but he’s one of my favorite Nats.

by Ben Buchanan on Aug 10, 2009 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions

There's a bit of truth to it.

95% of what we hear today will be forgotten oldies in 50 years.

by lone1c on Aug 10, 2009 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Let me put it this way.

Music does not get the credit the classics we listen to now gained without withstanding the test of time.

But much of the definitive music of this generation is not old enough to have withstood said test.

Beyond which, there’s such a massive volume of stuff coming out now—more than before—because of all the new ways for Media to get out regardless of quality that there’s a lot more published garbage. The percentage of good stuff is lower, but I question if there’s really less quality.

by Ben Buchanan on Aug 10, 2009 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions

and I hate to say it again but

much of what you hear today is derived from classics. The level of talent is different now, it is more about a look nowadays. If looks were the bigger focus as it seems to be today, Patsy Cline, Aretha, etc wouldn’t have made it.

Although I did see a hair care bottle advertise its leading ingredient as “purified aqua” recently. I had a good chuckle about that.

But, sadly, I suspect that a very large percentage of people would have a hard time telling you what the formula actually means.

Very true.

By everyone, I meant the people who need to know the formula for practical reasons – it’s shorter to just say water, or H2O even, than whatever combination of suffixes and prefixes the nearest chemistry textbook dictates is correct.
