Red Sox may be after Brewers' J.J. Hardy
According to ESPN (via NESN), the Red Sox may be trying to acquire Brewers shortstop J.J. Hardy:
The Red Sox reportedly placed a claim on Nationals shortstop Cristian Guzman but they could also be seeking J.J. Hardy of the Brewers, according to ESPN.com.
According to the report, the 26-year-old Hardy has yet to clear waivers, and the Red Sox could be interested. The Brewers and Red Sox reportedly talked before the trade deadline about Hardy, but, according to the report, had a disagreement over his value.
Here are Hardy's stats this season:
I think what we need to face is the fact we're not going to get a shortstop that can really hit the ball before the season is over. The best part about Hardy though, is he has potential to hit the ball. He hit 26 home runs in 2007.
Out of anybody, I'd take a chance on Hardy, but this still isn't an amazing upgrade.

I think some other team will block us.
This is the kind of acquisition that should have been made before the deadline.

That's the big question
It’s not like Hardy has been that good this year.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

If they disagreed about Hardy's value before 7/31
I’m sure they won’t agree now.
It's over, Thanks Theo.
The Brewers, at least, have a good back-up plan to Hardy in Escobar
I would imagine they’ll be shopping him in the offseason anyway, with Escobar pushing through their minor league system, and Hardy being under control for only one more year.

The word on Guzman is
That the Sox DIDN’T place a claim on him after all (way to bolster that “reputation”, Cafardo), but were just considering him.
Cafardo is SO unreliable
Anyone who quotes him should be banned from this site. :)

Give me Hardy over Guzman
Hardy’s younger, he’s cheaper, and he’s much better defensively. He could, theoretically, bounce back a bit next year with the bat. He’s worth more than Guzman for all those reasons.
And it’s exactly why he won’t make it to us through waivers.

Disagree
I would love some extra offense, who wouldn’t? But not at the expense of defense at such a premium position. I believe Guzman leads the Nats in errors, and considering he has a plus defender like Zimmerman next to him to cover a bit, that’s not great. I don’t want a .750 OPS if it comes with a crappy defense.
There’s a reason Hardy most likely won’t clear waivers and Guzman did, in my opinion.

Rarely does a quality player without question marks clear waivers
it’s a junk pile. We are beggers and we cannot be choosers.
It's over, Thanks Theo.
Which is why I don't want Guzman
That’s a panic move, in my opinion. Hardy’s simply a better player. In the past two years he was worth over 4 wins per season. Guzman’s never been close to that. I’ll take premium defense at SS over premium offense if I could only pick one.

According to you, it's over time
So why even bother to panic now? Guzman will help us the rest of the year but then potentially hurt us next year. I hate seeing Green out there as much as you, of that much you can be sure, but I’m not going to admit that I’d like the Sox to take on an expensively mediocre player because he presents an upgrade for two months for a position that demands more defensively than offensively. Hell at this point I’d take Jack Wilson over the Guz. I’m being stubborn about this, obviously, but I don’t think I’m wrong, either.

at SS we really need good defense
Not that Guzman is bad, but I’m just tired of seeing middling defense at SS. Even Renteria was a disappointment defensively!
And while Guzman can hit, he still has a low OBP because he never walks. We already have a fast guy that never walks in the lineup – we don’t need another!
Agreed
Not that Hardy’s OBP is anything to write home about, but I’m pretty sure that so far this year Guzman has walked a total of around 14 times! And we’re already almost halfway through August. That’s less than 4 walks per month.
If Hardy can bounce back even a little bit, his age, contract, and superior defense make him a much better choice. The problem is whether we can pick him up on waivers of if we’d have to wait until the offseason.

imo he's worse than penny.
he wouldn’t really be an upgrade over smoltz.

The homers would definitely go down in Fenway.

He hit a lot of low-elevation liners to left.

No offense to Hardy, I think he is our best cheap option ("cheap" is used loosely)
But we need to stop acquiring sub-par shortstops. We need to go after someone a bit higher. I’m not talking Hanley, but just someone that can make plays consistently and hit moderately well with a bit of power.
Well, I'll appreciate for you to keep my zingers outta your mouth!
i don't like hardy, but
he is better than green only because he plays great defense. although, he is a worse hitter than green.

As a Brewers fan...
hardy’s arm is good but his range is suspect. the .228 is a bit lower than expected, which is probably .260. The 20-HR is about right, he’s got pop in the bat when he gets a pitch up high where he likes it.
More infielders
There is going to be even more of a logjam, WE NEED OUTFIELDERS or a back up 2nd baseman. Well, barring Lowrie comes back healthy at some point but in my book its OF’s or a back up 2nd baseman (one that wont complain about PT because he wont get much).
We have 1 SS though.
If we got Hardy, Nicky would become the backup MIF.

True
But im sure there’s OF help out there, JD Drew looks like he needs a rest most nights and Bay is looking like that right now
We have Reddick, if only for a little bit longer before he realizes that he's not suppsed to be playing this well against the MLB...
And some help in Pawtucket, thanks to Kotsay and Lugo. Another option may be to place Saito on waivers and trade him for a decent 4th OF.

Alcides Escobar in the wings
I didn't like the old one very much. I didn't see the ball there very well. - Julio Lugo on the old Yankees Stadium.
Guzman
I would love to have Cristian Guzman on this team that would be almost as big as the Martinez trade because the Red Sox need a legitamite shortstop they can’t be throwing the scrubs that they have now out there. Guzman would be huge
Except we didn't actually claim him (Cafardo needs to be gagged).
And we don’t need a free-swinging shortstop with defensive issues.
