4 Ks through 2 innings for Penny
Who hit 97 MPH on that last fastball.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.
Toronto up 2-1
Way to suck at being AMERICAN, Yankees.

I wouldn't say that
the problem with penny is that he doesn’t have that swing and miss kind of pitch! And that’s the main reason he never goes more than 6 innings!

Hard fastball and good breaking pitch
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Penny is likely done
Over 100 pitches.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.
I was thinking the same thing.

Hell, Tek to 3rd, Ells to 2nd, and we get a run on the groundout there.
Shit baserunning to say the least.
Hey fellas just got in,
& you’re never going to believe this. One of my British buddies here had his birthday party today with a American 4th of July theme. Am I missing something?
Another quality start by Penny
Now please no bullpen fail please no bullpen fail please no bullpen fail…
ZING! ZANG! ZUNG!
Missin' offense plz report to Fenway park
I repeat: Missin’ offense plz report to Fenway park ASAP

It's the 4th of July
there should be (offensive) fireworks at AMERICA’s most beloved ballpark.
ZING! ZANG! ZUNG!
I don't know if this is good news or bad news
Wang left today’s game with an injury.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.
A first pitch strike
I can’t believe it!
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.
All those who should pitch
in high-leverage situations in the future, take one step forward.
Takashi Saito? Not so fast…
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
It's incredibly reactionary
But I’m about done with him at this point. He’s still got good stuff, but can’t command it. And it could’ve been predicted that it would go that way.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
UGH
On a somewhat related note, when did Aardsma become a Mariner, and their closer?
My memory of him is that he started the Spring training game I went to. It was the one before they went to Japan and there was that weird labor dispute that delayed it. It was awesome, except that bad outfield defense helped us lose 4-3 to Toronto. At least Youk hit a 3-run bomb.
ZING! ZANG! ZUNG!
You guys traded him to us at the beginning of the offseason for a low-minors pitcher.
Blanking on the name, I don’t remember him ever being particularly exciting.
LH SP Fabian Williamson.
21 years old I think, 22nd round pick in 2006. Probably tells you all you need to know about him. Aardsma became the closer when Morrow blew a couple saves at the beginning of the season and took a trip to the DL. While effective so far, it’s always scary watching him pitch.
The run-scoring single hit to Kotsay....
Mishandled, like a mental error? or what?
Well, I'll appreciate for you to keep my zingers outta your mouth!
Like the mental error
Of Saito not knowing what a strike zone is.
In all honesty I didn’t see it either.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
This is an honest-to-god question.
Is MDC still in Baltimore?
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
I know.
I suppose my badly-made point is that I’ve got more faith in him than Saito in that situation especially after the Meltdown in Maryland.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
I just put mine on
It’s signed by Dan Shaughnessy and I’m eating a mint oreo, if any of that helps.
ZING! ZANG! ZUNG!
Boston globe's Extra bases
The last two hitters in the Mariners order are 8-for-16 with six RBI and four runs scored in the first two games of this series.

Jesus Christ
Tito Francona is a fucking moron now.
I didn't like the old one very much. I didn't see the ball there very well. - Julio Lugo on the old Yankees Stadium.
It's like he is just handing them the games
“Oh really? Saito can’t find the strike zone?! WHO CARES!!!”
I didn't like the old one very much. I didn't see the ball there very well. - Julio Lugo on the old Yankees Stadium.
When you only score two runs
It doesn’t matter who is pitching. You are going to lose.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.
by Drugs Delaney on Jul 4, 2009 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions
Nope.
What we apparently should be doing is leaving relievers with already questionable command and control in while they walk everyone on the other f’n team.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
Agreed
But the only runs scored on a flukey bloop hit.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.
by Drugs Delaney on Jul 4, 2009 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions
No runs would have scored had there not been three consecutive walks
Stop playing the optimist card, you and I both know there is no reason Saito should have been in there after the second BB.
I didn't like the old one very much. I didn't see the ball there very well. - Julio Lugo on the old Yankees Stadium.
Bard wasn't ready
You don’t warm two pitchers up, unless one of them is your closer.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

And, BTW, Charged
Calling the hit what it was is not being optimistic. Saito sucked. Guess what. It happens.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.
by Drugs Delaney on Jul 4, 2009 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions
But you are saying the only runs scored on one hit
If that hit happened without 3 BB’s in a row, I would be fine. But because Saito walked the bases loaded, there was no reason he should have been out there. None at all.
Why didn’t anyone even go out to the mound to visit him? It was only after 9 pitches to Cedeno that Tek FINALLY came out.
I didn't like the old one very much. I didn't see the ball there very well. - Julio Lugo on the old Yankees Stadium.
Drugs
Generally plays the even-keeled card, which is excellent.
I have a hard time remaining so about a pitcher whose command is spotty even in his good outings.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
Flukey bloop hit
which would’ve been painless had the sacks not been loaded with 3 walks.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
Tito puts too much fait in his relievers
Remember last year with Gagne? Now Ramirez/Saito… he should try to stick with Delcarmen, Pap, etc… I know he can’t always, but still. It’s annoying to watch this stuff happen.
I would like to see Bard as opposed to Saito at this point
If you wanna lose a game, atleast let the young guy get some clutch experience and possibly lose.
I didn't like the old one very much. I didn't see the ball there very well. - Julio Lugo on the old Yankees Stadium.
Mariners record against the Sox this season
4-1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Embarassing

The Mariners seem to be a loose barometer for the Red Sox.
The years you beat them, you make the playoffs. The years you don’t, you don’t. This year is beginning to look like a don’t year.
by NG on Jul 4, 2009 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions
Dumb
record against the M’s in 07 4-6
record against the M’s in 08 6-3
maybe having a losing recod against Seattle is a barometer for winning the WS.
Let's look at this further.
year—-wins——-loses——playoffs
2001—-3————-6———-No
2002—-4————-5———-No
2003—-5————-4———-yes
2004—-5————-4———-yes
2005—-3————-3———-yes
2006—-4————-6———-no
2007—-4————-5———-yes
2008—-6————-3———-yes
2009—-1————-4———-??
Other than in 2007 which was close, if the sox have a losing season against Seattle, they do not make the playoffs going back to 2001. This year their record is 1 win to 4 loses counting today, so they will have a losing record against Seattle this year.
by NG on Jul 4, 2009 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions
I watch Seattle because
my son lives there, and I go to see the Sox play there each year while visiting him.
I believe playing Seattle is a good barometer for the real potential of the Sox team in any year because Seattle is out of dicision and usually slightly above average as a team. Therefore you do not get thge big adrenalin push when playing them, so the results can be a good indicator of the real talent of that team.
I hate to say this and I am sure Drugs will have a fit, but this year is looking more and more like 2006! NOTE TO EVERYONE, I HOPE I AM WRONG ON THIS PREDICTION, BUT the side by side comparison such as this Seattle analogy with other years is beginning to show real problems, IMO. If the SOX LOSE AT HOME TODAY TO Seattle and up going 5 and 1 against them this year, then do not expect this team in the playoffs.

Just curious
how would you fix this problem? What moves would you make that Francona is failing to do?
It is a matter of getting top talent and using it effectively.
Ofensively, I would have spent money in the off season for a young catcher and a more secure shortstop, although I realize Green may yet come through. It /hewas a risk earlier in the planning however.
Pitching-well as others have suggested, I would be somewhat quicker to pull failing starters and especially failing relievers. 2 unintented, uncontrolled waiks for a reliver—out. Two hits in an inning for a reliever—out. I know you all are sensitive to wearing out the pen, but if you are already losing, why live with that reality which is the worst result.

As I mentioned on another thread
The Capitals had a problem with lack of motivation when playing bad teams. They had a great record against top teams but were mediocre against others.
ZING! ZANG! ZUNG!
That's a really small sample size there, NG.
Seems like a coincidence.
OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
Our team is regressing
Our offense can’t fucking hit
Our bullpen is now doing shitty daily
Our manager is a fucktard now with his pitching choices.
This isn’t fun to watch.

I CANT!!
WE SHOULD JUST TRADE BUCH, BARD, BOWDEN, AND CASEY KELLY FOR PUJOLS!!!! AND THEN THE REST OF OUR FARM FOR HANLEY!!! ITS THE ONLY WAY TO WIN!

Well...
Pujols is frickin’ beast (random, but I read on Big League Stew that his full name is Jose Alberto Pujols Alcantara).
ZING! ZANG! ZUNG!
Considering that embarrassing 10-1 comeback lose,
the lucky come back win the next day against the Oriloes and now this, it is really 4 loses in a row or almost. Not promising.
by NG on Jul 4, 2009 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions
It was also
“almost” 4 wins in a row using your very same logic.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
3 loses and one win in the books, but
against what kind of teams?
by NG on Jul 4, 2009 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions
Baseball kind of teams.
With the M’s having some good pitching and the Orioles having a still underrated offense.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
I can understand the loss last night to King Felix
That dude is a monster. He is producing Greinke-type numbers, mid season.
But today, knowing the only offense we can muster against some unknown guy, is a two run homer… Thats embarassing.
Our offense really needs to wake up, because it is fully gone right now.
I didn't like the old one very much. I didn't see the ball there very well. - Julio Lugo on the old Yankees Stadium.
Slop-throwing LHs
Always SEEM to give us trouble. Olson fits that bill.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
I understand what you mean
They were all close games we coulda shoulda won. Like I said, the Mariners are better this season, and the Orioles are resilient with a good offense (I should know, being a Marylander and all- hence the “crab” in crabchowdah). However, even though we lost a sure win and won a sure loss in Bmore, that certainly doesn’t make the 11-10 loss acceptable.
ZING! ZANG! ZUNG!
That was supposed to be the EASY part of the schedule???
I am starting to get afraid of the A’s and the Royals?
The only Red Sox fan in a country where nobody cares about basball!
Well, KC rallied to beat the lesser color of Sox
Then again, the Natinals rallied to beat the Braves (not trying to hate on the Nats, they may suck but they are my team in the NL.
ZING! ZANG! ZUNG!
Going to extra innings in the Bronx
Cano stranded two runners.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.
What does everyone/anyone think of the thought process
Behind PHing Kott for Lugo? Sure, I see LHH vs. RHP, but with Kott’s inexperience vs. Lugo’s current skill at reaching base in general, I don’t get it in the interest of winning THIS game. Get Lugo on and give Drew a shot against a RHH FB pitcher.

this is chicken little again
But it felt like giving up on the game in favor of giving Kottaras experience in that kind of spot.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
Tito probably felt that Kottaras had a better shot of hitting a long ball
I would have stayed with Lugo, who has better on-base numbers, and hoped JD could tie or win the game.
