WBZ: Red Sox acquire Indians' Victor Martinez
UPDATE, 3:23: Tony Massarotti confirms Bryan Price is part of the deal.
According to WBZ, the Red Sox have officially acquired Indians catcher/first baseman Victor Martinez.
Roche says it's believed the Sox are giving up pitcher Justin Masterson and Class A pitcher Nick Hagadone.
No more news than this. If it's only Masterson and Hagadone, I'm not so sure. It's a lot better than trading Clay Buchholz, but like we've said for weeks now, Martinez wasn't the guy we want. I like Hagadone's potential, so I'm not 100 percent sold on this trade.
More when it breaks.

Per MLBTR
Done deal, says Nightengale via Twitter (Martinez for Masterson & Hagadone). MLB Network’s Tom Verducci says pitcher Bryan Price is the third hurler going to Cleveland in the trade.

Where to put him?
I’m a Victor fantasy owner. Any word on where the Sox intend on playing him? Is his going to take over for Tek, or is he in a two way platoon with Lowell and Tek?
One day, the dream will come true.
I see him playing more 1B than C
He will prolly platoon with Lowell but i think Lowell will sit alot now.

Here's how i see the playing time working out.
35% C Tek, 1B VMart, 3B Youk, DH Papi
30% C Tek, 1B Youk, 3B Lowell, DH VMart
20% C VMart, 1B Youk, 3B Lowell, DH Papi
10% C Tek, 1B Youk, 3B Lowell, DH Papi
5% C Tek, 1B V Mart, 3B, Lowell, DH, Papi
Basically, Youk starts 95% of the games, Martinez 90%, Varitek 80%, Ortiz 70%, Lowell 65%
IMO, this is the best way to rest the players who need it, and get our best talent on the field.

Rec'd.
Maybe get VMart and Papi to swap a little more playing time.
@bs_uf15bosox9be:OverTheMonster-ALLERGEN WARNING:May contain PB.
I don't think so
Since June 1st:
The Large Father – (164 AB) 14 HR .280 AVG/.355 OBP/.591 SLG (.946 OPS)
VMart – (180 AB) 8 HR .211 AVG/.303 OBP/.378 SLG (.681 OPS)
If anyone sits, it should be Martinez—unless, he starts hitting again. For the past two months, Ortiz has been the best hitter on the Sox.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

That's what I meant.
Should’ve clarified who would be giving playing time to who.

The general consensus at OTM has been not to acquire V-Mart.
Masterson, Hagadone + Price is not the best deal IMO.
We always overrated our prospects on here...
Sure Hagadone is a good prospect but there are many guys like him who have turned out to be crap.

A right handed bat...
who can provide some power and versitility to our team.
He can Catcher, DH and Play 1st.
Spell Ortiz, Lowell (via Youk), Tek and Youk.
He is a major upgrade over Tek at the plate.

Major Upgrade?
Not really. Better hitter yes, but defensively V-Mart is terrible at catcher. Wouldve rather traded for AGonz.
No crap I would rather have Agon
but not at the price of 6 freaking prospects.

Ok, he can catch. But can he catch Wakefield?
Everyone can play DH. Adam LaRoche could do 1B/DH.
And I would disagree that he’s a major upgrade over Varitek. Do you think Varitek is going to sit on the bench?
Really? I guess the Wild Pitch numbers are down
But that’s also because Wake hasn’t been quite as wild this year.

He's not as good as Tek at the plate.
At least, not when he catches.
But he just needs to be better than Kottaras then.
by Ben Buchanan on Jul 31, 2009 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions
An improvement over Kottaras and LaRoche, basically.
AND 2 DRAFT PICKS
I cannot stress that last bit enough.

No, the general consensus was not to acquire him...
at the price rumored (Buch+), esp. if we could get AGon for a reasonable price. Neither of those things happened, so VMart is looking like a solid acquisition.

.. according to multiple sources on Twitter. Hope we got someone to replace Masterson in the pen.
I like the VMart trade with just Masterson and Hagadone. Less crazy about it if Bryan Price is involved.
Agreed
I still think it’s a fair trade, but for some reason I just really like Hagadone

couldn't you find a better photo to caption this post? :)
Perfect. The Sox acquire an aging corner infielder who’s struggled to hit the ball since June. You can really see how Theo is fitting the pieces together.
Not a fan of the trade. There’s a reason young arms are in such demand.
More casual than the average fan.

V-Mart
V-Mart has some versatility, that’s what I like. But still, he’s not a great catcher. He can just play there….
Right, and in my opinion, at least, that's all you need when you've got Wakefield pitching.
You’re not gonna see many guys caught stealing. There’s gonna be a few passed balls and wild pitches. So long as there’s not 8,000 every game…
by Ben Buchanan on Jul 31, 2009 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions
He's a waste
He’s nothing special. somewhat of an upgrade for Tek at bat, but not worth it because of how well Tek catches a game. He is no better than Youk or lowell; or Papi for that matter.
And we wasted a top ten prospect, a decent long/middle reliever/starter, and Price, who is not a bad prospect.
Bottom line:
We had the pitching to give up, which I don’t mind, but we needed a solid bat, not Victor Martinez. I see this as a waste
We'd still get at least one, likely two, first round draft picks in the awesome draft that will be 2011.
And this allows us to REST guys and play the splits better.

Where will he play?
"Ninety percent [of my salary] I'll spend on good times, women, and Irish whiskey. The other ten percent I'll probably waste."
-Tug McGraw
Takes LaRoche's spot.
VMart takes Masterson’s spot.
@bs_uf15bosox9be:OverTheMonster-ALLERGEN WARNING:May contain PB.
We will need someone else in the Pen
Masterson was really the only guy that could go two or more innings comfortably. We should bring up Bowden or another AAA or AA starter to replace Masterson; therefore Kotchman goes to triple A.
I don't see him playing in the majors this year
I’d like to see him in triple A. He’s solid, but not what we need.
Not crazy about it.
But, we didn’t give up anyone that I really wanted to keep.
What we have to hope for is that we send Kottaras down, and give Vic 2 out of 5 starts as a catcher, then let him fill in at 1b/DH a little bit.
"Ninety percent [of my salary] I'll spend on good times, women, and Irish whiskey. The other ten percent I'll probably waste."

He is actually not
.704 ops while catching
Varitek .807

yes bc stats tell everything about a player ?
V-Mart will mash in Fenway with real protection around him.

protection is overrated

You can judge a guy’s character from your couch? Good for you, but most of us cannot.
"Ninety percent [of my salary] I'll spend on good times, women, and Irish whiskey. The other ten percent I'll probably waste."
-Tug McGraw
Well, you can read all his stats from your couch. But yeah, there is much more to a player. I just doubt you can use your conception of a player’s character to project his future performance.
"Ninety percent [of my salary] I'll spend on good times, women, and Irish whiskey. The other ten percent I'll probably waste."
-Tug McGraw
Pretty SSS if you’re just looking at this year. Vic has been a much better hitter than Varitek for a lot of years.
"Ninety percent [of my salary] I'll spend on good times, women, and Irish whiskey. The other ten percent I'll probably waste."
-Tug McGraw
Martinez is worn down by catching.
His numbers will climb back with more time at 1B. But this was never about finding an upgrade over Tek, who’s doing very well this year really.
by Ben Buchanan on Jul 31, 2009 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions
Another way to look at V-Mart.
The long faces on this board must be attributed to not getting AG from SD v. stealing V-Mart from Cleveland.
Look at what the Red Sox gave up:
Justin Masterson – A guy I like, will be missed, but he is a pitcher without a spot on the staff. His job was taken by Bard.
Bryan Price – AA pitcher who “Could” be what? 6 th guy in the pen? Not much of a loss
Nick Hagadone – AA pitcher who just came off arm surgery. again not much lost.
So you gave up Masterson for 2 years of V-Mart. You keep Buchholz, Bowden, Bard, Tazawa, and Kelly, arguably the best pitching prospect in the organization. You keep Kalish, Anderson and Reddick, you best position prospects.
V-Mart will catch more than you think and the Red Sox HAD to get another bat after Papi got outed. There were too many questions with Lowell’s hip, Tex being old, Papi maybe going into a depression. V-Mart works.
This deal was genius, the Red Sox gave up nothing, especially when Bard is now the 7th and 8th inning guy and you just added a solid All-Star caliber bat to your lineup. Spelling guys like Lowell and Tex who need a break in the upcoming months.
Stat geek this all you want but the Red Sox won this deal easy.
Buzzy, when can I expect my apology? Or is Theo now considered a “Nut”, as well….
I think you’re undervaluing Hagadone a bit. If he’s not in that Buch-Bow-Bar-Taz-Kelly mix, he’s very, very close. He’s a power lefty — something that is very coveted in baseball nowadays.
Price, though, is just a throw-in and Masterson is a talented pitcher, but I don’t think we were ever going to see his best.
Hagadone
Is 23 an coming of TJ surgery, I’m not particularly bullish on his chances.
by Gnick on Jul 31, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions
Maybe I am, but is Hagadone a lock for a rotation spot some day?
and you do have to trade something to get a player. Hagadone seems like the least painful player to move.
The price was low...
but our problem with VMart has always been that we do not consider him to be much of an upgrade over Laroche (who is now gone too). Vic is just not much of a bat when he’s not behind the dish.
"Ninety percent [of my salary] I'll spend on good times, women, and Irish whiskey. The other ten percent I'll probably waste."
-Tug McGraw
Except his bat improves when he's not.
Just like he has a .706 OPS when catching, he has a .966 OPS when playing 1B.
by Ben Buchanan on Jul 31, 2009 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions
career .825 OPS as C but only .791 as DH. So as long as we never DH him I’m fine. He probably has trouble concentrating when he’s not in the field…or not. Why look at only his last 225 PA’s at C when he has more than 2800 in his career?
My question is: do you think he will be 250 OPS points better at 1B going forward?
"Ninety percent [of my salary] I'll spend on good times, women, and Irish whiskey. The other ten percent I'll probably waste."
-Tug McGraw
My answer is:
I think he will be a very good offensive player as his time at C decreases and his time at 1B increases.
by Ben Buchanan on Jul 31, 2009 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions
Agreed
I like this deal a lot. It’s very obvious that we needed another piece to be a serious contender- particularly on offense. Our options were Gonzalez or Martinez. I for one, would much rather have:
Martinez, Buchholz, Bowden, Bard, Anderson, Kelly
than
Gonzalez, Masterson, and one other guy on the above list.
San Diego’s demands were far too high. Yes, Gonzalez is the better hitter and fielder, but there is not enough of a difference to justify trading Buchholz, Bard, and other top prospects. We gave up expendable pieces for something that we really need: a good middle of the order bat to fill in for Lowell, Ortiz, and Varitek. We kept our best prospects, and got a someone who will be a big help to us this year and next.
Not sure I get the Papi getting "outed" bit...
But I agree with you for the most part.
@bs_uf15bosox9be:OverTheMonster-ALLERGEN WARNING:May contain PB.
What I don't understand is....
Isn’t Vmart offense going through a slump?
I don’t understand how adding a slumping playing to a slumping offense is going to help us win now. Which is what this deal is about, winning now.
Vmart:
June: 100 AB, .240 AVG, .322 OBP, .480 SLG, .802 OPS
July: 80 AB, .175 AVG, .280 OBP, .250 SLG, .530 OPS
V-Mart was the offense in Cleveland
He now has some protection.

I think slumps need to be nullified after a trade. Anything can happen on a new team and in a new ballpark.
True I do agree with that to an extect.
On the other hand, he has been struggling for two months. I don’t know if he will be able to spark our offense like I think this trade was designed to do.
Many people said Jason Bay was overrated and his stats were declining...
when he was traded last season. That turned out to be fantastic for Boston.
Do not underestimate the power of a change of scenery and attitude as a motivator. Sports history is littered with players who got 2nd chances and did very well. We have two in our starting lineup…Lowell and Bay.
But also with guys who sucked after being traded.
"Ninety percent [of my salary] I'll spend on good times, women, and Irish whiskey. The other ten percent I'll probably waste."
-Tug McGraw
I'm not saying he is declining, and I hope he does take off like Bay did after the trade.
I was concerned that by the fact our offensive has been bad in july, and Vmart has been bad for the last two months.
He was been horrible in July. If he was coming to a hot hitting Boston line up I’d be less concerned about his last couple of months.
But a cold hitting coming into a cold line up, where is the spark, the big bat, that gets things going?
Ummm, anybody watching NESN?

I Love this trade!
I was unsure until I saw Matinez talking on ESPN News – he talked about wanting to wear one uniform for his entire career and choked up while thanking the Indians organization and the fans. He will contribute, he will play better for Boston than he did for Cleveland, and we can only hope some of his humility will rub off on Pap.
