We’re all hoping this isn’t true, given the presumptive cost.

The only way this makes sense
Is if there’s concern about Varitek’s ability to make it through to the end of the season.
MLB Network,
“I hear Masterson, Tazawa part of the deal.”
SBNation:
Kelly, Buchholz, Youk, Pedroia, Beckett, and Lester part of deal.

I think Ellsbury was a throw-in, according to their report.

My initial reaction: Pissed.
But maybe that’s because I’m really not wild about Victor Martinez.

+1
Maybe. I feel like I’m overvaluing Hagadone, but so be it. On the one hand, V-Mart is good insurance for Lowell (via Youk) and Varitek. Three problems:
1) there is speculation that the Sox are looking to add more names. Unless one of those names is Vernon Wells through TOR for Halladay, I’ll be pissed;
2) what happens to Adam The Rock?
3) this ruins my wild speculation about Buch, Masty, Lowrie, Lars, Expo for Halladay, Scutaro

The Rock
would have to be sent packing, unless Lowell is in for an extended (and I mean extended) DL stint.

Apparently the Braves might be interested in a reunion.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
And I guess I might be more in the overvaluing Masterson area.

2 draft picks
1 at least.
Keep that in mind.

Wasn't even thinking of that.
I’m now in love with this deal.

Not Happy
I really don’t see how he helps are team all that much, sure he might be good insurance but who are we giving up? I like Buch, and I think he can help and will be a good pitcher. I feel they should go after A-Gonz over V-Mart. I would give up a decent amount for A-Gonz. That way Ortiz, Lowell, and Youk can get some time off. A-Gonz can start at 1st, Youk at third with Lowell and Ortiz playing DH/ Lowell at 3rd.
Keep in mind Fenway is a little better hitter's park than the Jake in Cleveland
so VMart’s numbers should improve a bit here.
He also gives us another switch hitter. Value even as a pinch-hitter there.
He’s also 5 years younger than Tek who may be done after 2010.
Everything I've heard about Martinez
says that he’s done at catcher now, and should move to 1B. So this deal still doesn’t make sense.

Done worse than Tek?
The light-hitting Kottaras (finally) drops off the map now except for catching Wake, pinch-running for the other 2 Cs, and mop-up stuff.
See, I think Kottaras behind the dish isn't much of a difference between putting a Kottaras-sized cutout back there.
So we may as well put Martinez back there when Wake pitches.

V -Mart
I’d be thrilled with getting V-Mart for Masterson and Hagadone. He’s clearly a upgrade offensively over Varitek. And he’s caught the last 2 AL Cy Young winners, so he must be doing something right behind the plate.
Then I’d send Clay and Lars to San Diego for AGonz.

Many other catchers could've caught CC to a Cy. He could've helped Lee get over some of his demons, but I doubt it.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
Yeah i guess
I like Lars though, but I really like A-Gonz. If it is true that we got V-Mart for Masterson and Hagadone then I think we got a decent deal. Now we need to go get A-Gonz
limited access because of work
any MFY deals to be concerned about?

The Red Sox deal is done. Done deal.

Does anyone remember the day
we traded maybe too much pitching depth for a non-catcher to fill roles that are already filled?
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
O! Me! I remember!
Back in winter of 06, we sold Bronson Arroyo down the river to Cincinnatti. However, Wily Mo Pena filled in nicely in CF, since Coco Crisp was injured on like the 3rd day of the season.

I don't hate this deal
But I certainly don’t love it. He’s a good hitter, but not great. Looks like Halladay was going to cost too much, A-Gon too. I liked Hagadone though, shame to lose him. Masterson seems like a nice guy, but
On the other hand, this seems to have really pissed off the Rays fans, so I guess that’s good.
Can we flip V-Mart for A-Gon?
by South Coast Ghost on Jul 31, 2009 3:11 PM EDT reply actions
Damnit, let me have some hope!
Not that V-Mart is a bad player. Him for Masterson and Hagadone straight up seems like a fair enough deal. Wonder if Bowden takes Masterson’s place.

This is a good deal for us, actually.
We didn’t give up really all that much, we got a guy who I see as more of an improvement over Kott and LaRoche than as a sort of meh starting 1B, and we’ll get draft picks back later.
So the question is who catches Wake when he comes back. For now, Kottaras is headed down, but in a few weeks we’ll see.
"Ninety percent [of my salary] I'll spend on good times, women, and Irish whiskey. The other ten percent I'll probably waste."

Seriously, he can probably catch Wake.
Kottaras is no great shakes. Nobody is throwing out runners off a Wakefield knuckleball. All he needs to do is keep a reasonable number of pitches in front of him, and Kott was letting plenty go by himself.
by Ben Buchanan on Jul 31, 2009 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions
And he was going to catch him in the ASG, so he's seen Wake's stuff before.
Kott was supposed to be the offensive catcher of the two when we were considering a platoon of him and Dusty Brown, right?

Any chance for A-Gonz
Do we have any chance of landing him?
We technically have the pieces
But it would decimate our pitching depth with Masterson gone

Justin Masterson, Nick Hagadone, and Bryan Price for V-Mart
Is reportedly the final price

Justin Masterson, Nick Hagadone, and Bryan Price.
I'm signing out.

Bowden, perhaps.
Semi-starter. Makes sense.
by Ben Buchanan on Jul 31, 2009 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions
That's what I was thinking.
Also, he’s already been called up, so it’s not like they’ll lose an option to do so again.
Exactly.
Besides which, he’s ready for the show. He spent a few weeks over the last month incorporating his slider. Took a team-mandated vacation during which he worked out some remaining kinks, and has seen instant dividends. He walked 9 guys in 2 games while working on the Slider (for fairly obvious reasons), but in the last 2 games has pitched 14 innings, giving up 3 runs, walking nobody, and striking out 11 while showing a very mixed repertoire (Fastball, Curve, Change, and Slider all working)

Wouldn't you be upset, too?
He probably didn’t have much of an idea he’s going to be traded, and now he gets to go from Boston—a team he clearly loved playing for—to Cleveland.
