Buehrle = Perfect
Other Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle pitched a perfect game today, marking the 18th time in over a century of professional baseball that this feat has occurred. Buehrle benefited from superb defense, especially a catch by Dewayne Wise that robbed old friend Gabe Kapler of a home run. Best of all, the ChiSox opponent was the Tampa Bay Rays, #1 threat to the Red Sox's Wild Card spot.
Two years ago Buehrle was a talked-about trade target for Boston at the midseason deadline. Of course it never happened, and we all know how that season ended up. It would have been cool if Buehrle had pitched his perfect game in a Red Sox uniform. Unfortunately, knowing our porous defense, it probably would've been a 10-run rout for Tampa.

I think that the term perfect is too much for this kind of outing
OK, it’s huge to get 27 up, 27 down in a game but those 27 outs could all be line outs. We should call it “No hit, no walk” outing! and keep the term perfect for 27 strike outs!

Huh?
And they shouldn’t call pitches balls and strikes, because balls are also used to pitch strikes. They should call balls “pitches thrown outside the strike zone at which the batter did not swing.” And the bat isn’t really a bat, it’s a “cylindroidal wooden implement for the purpose of contacting a baseball.” And for that matter does the third base coach really stand ON third base…?
Get real, dude.
Go (White) Sox.

Something doesn't seem right
Wait a minute…we drop slightly to the other half of a close division race in July and all of a sudden the focus is “the Tampa Bay Rays, #1 threat to the Red Sox’s Wild Card spot”??
Does this seem insanely premature and pessimistic to anybody else?

Slightly sarcastic.
Some people are spazzing out.

i completely agree with the above me. screw the wild card, the division is ours. every team has a bad stretch, remember how we started off the season?

Well
Buehrle is a fairly underrated pitcher (was, because now he’s likely going to be overrated). Kudos to him, amazing game.

Thank you DJWxx and ib33
I read the article and thought the same thing, “f*ck this, who’s talking wildcard?” This is a 97-98 win team, one 5 game stretch of poor hitting doesn’t change that. We pitched well enough to take 2 of 3 from Texas and the bats went cold. This happened earlier in the season and all the pants-pissers came out whinging that we were in trouble.
Well you know what, you are effing wrong. This is a great squad and as long as Ellsbury doesn’t lead off, we’ll be fine. Is it me or does everytime he hits leadoff we lose? Drew can hit .220 and his OBP and Pitches per AB will still be at least 15% higher than Ellsburys.

And as for the perfecto...
would’ve never happened at Fenway, I reckon that Kapler ball would have hit the wall to high up to be caught…
But nonetheless, Buehrle does rock. He’s consistently good, gets through his 230 innings a year and just deals when he’s on the mound. No piffaffing around, I love those 2 hour games.

Congrats Buehrle
Couldn’t have happened to a better guy. Great pitcher. Amazing Guy. He is an ace who doesn’t get the respect he deserves. I think he will now.
PS Did anyone else see that catch by Wise…….AMAZING
