Sox deal Lugo to Cards for Chris Duncan

Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Dispatch reports the Cardinals have traded Chris Duncan for Julio Lugo. The Boston Herald is also apparently confirming the deal.

http://news.bostonherald.com/blogs/sports/red_sox/?p=2615

Star-divide

Chris Duncan, an outfielder for the St. Louis Cardinals, has had a disappointing 2009, batting .227 with 5 home runs, 32 RBIs, and 25 runs. Duncan had just recently been demoted to AAA Memphis. Duncan was currently on an 1-31 slump.

By dealing for LaRoche earlier in the day, the Sox have added two decent left-handed bats with power, although both are having very disappointing seasons. Its reported that the Sox had to pay the rest of Lugo's contract for the trade.

End of Curse

The Cabrera Curse started when we did not re-sign Orlando, and signed Rent-a-Wreck from the Cards. since then, SS has been a revolving door for the Red Sox. With us trading Lugo to the Cards, maybe that curse will go away and we can have a good, consistent SS.

Forget OC - he never was that good

Since 2004, he has been on three teams. The Sox won a WS without him, and got Jacoby Ellsbury and Jed Lowrie with the compensation picks for losing him. Nobody in their right mind would trade Ells and Lowrie straight up for OC. The Sox made out well letting OC walk.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

+1

I hate when people bring up OCab. He has a career .718 OPS. He has barely (if at all) been better than the Sox SS’s over the past five years. And we got Lowrie and Ells!

I wouldn’t say that LaRoche’s season has been dissappointing, more like par for the course judging by his career. His second half stats are always much better.

I was shocked when I got home and saw we got Duncan, I always liked him on St.Louis. I feel like it’s a “Something from nothing” sort of trade. I really just expected him to be released and someone would sign him.

As a Cardinals fan....

I feel like we’re the ones getting something for nothing. Funny how that works. Lugo at least had a decent OBP whereas Duncan had nada. That 1-31 slump he’s in the middle of really sealed the deal for his reputation in the eyes of Cardinals fans. Didn’t stop Don Tony from defending his right hand man’s offspring to the bitter end though.

Who knows, maybe he can have a career revival in the Sox organization.

I would've taken

a bag of bats used by Albert. Might have been too much for STL to give up.

Once again, more informed.

The problem with Lugo is that he cannot play the field. At all.

No, we're not :-(

The article on redsox.com says we’re eating most of it, but we also got “cash considerations in the deal.” So I guess its better than a kick in the head.

The truth is both players stink

Duncan has been brutal the past two years for St. Louis, at bat and in LF. Lugo…..well, you know about him.

If I remember correctly Duncan was a pretty good platoon 2 years ago.

Indeed, he can't be hopeless

Chris Duncan, 2007: .259/.354/.480
375 ABs
51 R
21 HR
70 RBI
2 SB

Historically, he hits lefties poorly.

I wonder if these are moving parts in

a larger deal? Could it be possible? For Vmart/Lee blockbuster? For Pujols(I must be drinking). For the 2004 Red Sox? Can we make temporal trades?

Once again, more informed.

good by lugo we barely even knew u

We never really saw lugo the way that lugo use to abuse us in TB. May be PED may be he just hit his pinnical then and we got him after he shined the most. I will always remember that in the end he manned up and just admitted that the whole redsox expirment was a lost cause. Alot of professionals will defer the blame to something else. I will always admire him for it. Take your money Lugo u earned it(not for the play but the time he put in MLB), now go off into that great sunset and please dont end up like Ugueth Urbina.

SAwx are reeling

The panic is in in “redsock nation”.. The Chris Duncan will help the Sawx, about as much as Shelly Duncan is helping the yanks.. The only Duncan that can help either is DAVE!!!..

Julio Lugo may be the worst Signing in the history of the the wonder boy Theo.

The signing of Julio Lugo is almost as bad, as if not worse, than the release of Alex Gonzalez.

by Justin_Bobo on Jul 26, 2009 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Gonzo was an all-glove, no-bat kinda guy.

Lugo was supposed to be a good hitting shortstop with a good glove, but didn’t work out.
