Wake on the DL

Buchholz will start Wednesday and take Wakefield's spot.  This according to the Globe.  Wake's injury is described as a lower back strain.  Since fanposts need to be 75 words long-here is the link:

and now some extra words: blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah

"WE HAVE TOO MUCH PITCHING!!!"

those people now stand corrected…

by ritz on Jul 21, 2009 5:11 PM EDT reply actions

This is exactly why

we kept so much pitching around in the first place. Because injuries are inevitable.

ZING! ZANG! ZUNG!

I think we should survive

I want to see more of Clay in the majors anyway…

Only one word could describe what I'm feeling now

YEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS!

"It's designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything is new again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops, and leaves you to face the fall alone". A. Bartlett Giamatti

Why?

Wake has been good.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Don't get me wrong

I was not happy that Wake get injured! My happiness is due to the fact that Buch will get a 2nd chance to show that he’s MUCH better than Penny and that we should move Penny and give the guy his shot.

I'm a Drew hater (for his lack of heart and HUGE contract) only! now that the wifebeater is gone :)

Drew had enough heart to hit that granny off of Fausto Carmona, so hee’ll always be okay with me.

And a game-winning HR off K-Rod in last year’s ALDS. He also hit a huge 2-run HR in Game 5 of the ALCS, before knocking in the game-winning run. The Sox lose to Tampa in 5 without Drew.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Plus also in addition...

There was also that time he carried the whole team for a month or two last year.

Move penny so that, if Wake gets injured again

We can pitch Bowden or Masterson for extended time?

Not sure I’m comfortable with that.

by Ben Buchanan on Jul 21, 2009 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Though I do like that Buck gets to come right back up. He's probably a little giddy right now.

“Well we’re gonna send him down right after the game. Just giving him 1 game to get his feet wet again.”

3 days later

“Uh, so, hey, Clay, mind coming back up to Boston?”

As if he never left.

by Ben Buchanan on Jul 21, 2009 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions

We can pitch … Masterson for extended time?

Gosh, with a full five or six innings to work with, he could probably allow infinity-billion runs.

(I know he’s been better, but I remember Baltimore and KC…)

He didn't want to exhaust the pen?

Which makes as much sense as not using all the water in the fire truck in case you see another fire on the way back to the station.

Tough to lose Wake,

but I’m excited to give Buch another shot. If he can come out and put a few good starts together, we will be in a very good position for August/September.

Hopefully this is just Wake needing a bit more of a rest than he got during the ASB.

If he comes back and pitches well, we’re fine.

Dang it..

We should’ve traded Bucholz, Bard and Bowden for Alex Cora already. Oh wait….Old dudes land on the DL.

Once again, more informed.

by jkeough on Jul 21, 2009 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions

No he won't.

Options are counted on a seasonal basis. He has been up to the majors in 2007, 2008 and 2009. During those years, no matter how many times he goes up and down from the minors it only counts as one option. So after this season he will be out of options, but we can send him down for the rest of this year.

Waaahhh

Why didnt they pitch Wake in the All Star Game???

Does anyone else feel like this "screams" convenient 2 week vacation?

No matter what we’re told, I feel like his back hasn’t been ‘right’ in ages, and this just seems like a good time to give him some rest.

I could be wrong, obviously…

by Allen Chace on Jul 22, 2009 12:27 AM EDT reply actions

Yup

The Sox are supposed to be on the forefront of predicting how many productive innings they can get out of their pitchers. This is “banking” innings for later in the season – assuming the ground has not opened beneath the Fens and swallowed the team whole after four whole games lost in a row !!!

Hence the blase’ reaction above…

Rock me, sexy Jesus...

by nuthinboutnuthin on Jul 22, 2009 2:41 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree Allen.

I think this is precautionary. Wake could play through it (perhaps ineffectively) if he had to. The Sox are in a position where they can be careful and keep their pitchers rested and healthy. They want Wake going strong in August and September.

by SoxDevil on Jul 22, 2009 9:12 AM EDT up reply actions

I have an idea:

Since he likely won’t be on the playoff roster, how about having Wake get his back fixed with the extra month off? Maybe he comes back early next season, allowing us to give Bowden a shot with a rotation of Beck (assuming option), Lester, DiceK, Buch + him.

@bs_uf15bosox9be:OverTheMonster-ALLERGEN WARNING:May contain PB.

by bdalebs on Jul 22, 2009 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions

You think if...

Wake wins 18-19 games they leave him off the Playoff Roster? Seriously? If he does come back on Aug 2nd he gets 12 starts. 7-5 or 8-4 is highly possible. So you are looking at a 18-8 or 19-7 Tim Wakefield. Could be more wins if he gets on one of his “rolls”. imagine a 20 game winner left off the playoff roster. I doubt it.

Once again, more informed.

by jkeough on Jul 22, 2009 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Wooh, wins.

Timmeh is a very risky pitcher, simply because of his pitch. Sometimes the knuckler’s on, sometimes it’s not. I’d rather not find out in October.

@bs_uf15bosox9be:OverTheMonster-ALLERGEN WARNING:May contain PB.

by bdalebs on Jul 22, 2009 11:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I do too

But do Terry and Theo have the balls to leave a 18-19 game winner(the masses LOVE da wins) off the roster?

Once again, more informed.

by jkeough on Jul 22, 2009 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah.

The masses love the trophy more. Have Wake throw out the ceremonial first pitch before every AB for all I care.

Oooh

I like snarky answers. “And now for the memorial TW first pitch of the 5th AB of the 6th innning, Tim Wakefield!!” Crowd goes wild.

Once again, more informed.

by jkeough on Jul 23, 2009 12:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Just saying, the fans shouldn't always dictate what the team does.

The very fact that fans are judging Wake purely off W-L record shows that.

@bs_uf15bosox9be:OverTheMonster-ALLERGEN WARNING:May contain PB.

by bdalebs on Jul 23, 2009 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh

I agree with that. If the Sox did what the fans say J-Bay would’ve gotten himself a 50 year $75 Billion dollar contract on May 1st. I do think however that in particular cases fan sentiment and clubhouse sentiment may come in too play. Here you can’t tell me Wake isn’t universally adored(except when he pitches bad) and loved by his teammates(by all accounts). These things probably will come into play(even though they shouldn’t).

Once again, more informed.

by jkeough on Jul 23, 2009 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, but do you place sentiments before roster flexability?

What if it comes down to Wake vs. Nicky? I’d take Nicky.

No way..

I definitely agree with you, I just find that with Wake all normal decisions seem to go out the window(unless they talk him into the same thing with I can’t go for the betterment of the team)

Once again, more informed.

by jkeough on Jul 23, 2009 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions

He was left off the 07 playoff roster.

Timlin brought him on camera during the postgame celebration and went on a rant about it. Quite funny.

Who's he here?

Timmeh? He could choose to pull himself from the playoffs again this year.

by bdalebs on Jul 23, 2009 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes TW

Thats the best way. Still would be strange to see a 19 game winner left off the playoff roster although it looks like his stay is going be longer on the DL so it may all be moot.

Once again, more informed.
