Lineup

Longoria has been scratched and replaced on the team by Chone Figgins. Michael Young will start at 3rd and bat 7th…from ESPN.

Go us!!!! (an inside joke from my drama camp)

And for those who were wondering, Raykah is a rarely (if ever) used nickname.

I'm pretty upset here

I live in Saint Louis and couldn’t score tickets.

Ken Rosenthal

thinks that Halladay will be traded. He says that the Phils and Yanks are especially interested, and that Toronto wants to make the best deal, regardless of division.

2-3 NL

Throw to 3rd is off the mark,

Sure glad Hamilton is playing CF coming straight off the DL.
Glad the All Star game can be rehab for him.

I thought Beckett would succeed Doc

Buehrle’s not the better pitcher, at least going by this season’s numbers: his FIP is 4.63, Beckett’s is 3.36.

FREE JOSH BECKETT!

Wake next?

So he can throw to Mauer?

by ruktuim on Jul 14, 2009 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I suspect

Wake is being held in reserve for extra innings. Though Maddon might put him in regardless so he gets his first All-Star appearance.

by RickD on Jul 14, 2009 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions

He would've thrown to VMart if he came in, according to Maddon.

See FanShot.

Beckett pitched Sunday

I doubt we’ll see him at all.

by RickD on Jul 14, 2009 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Didn't want Beck to throw at all...

He was in the dugout all game too.

Plus, chicks dig the longball. Did you see any homers tonight?

So what incentive does that give the other teen guys to come on? :)

McCarver: Mauer is the sort of hitter that Billingsley can't go inside on.

[Billingsley throws to the inside corner. Mauer takes it for a strike.]

It's inexcusable

that they loaded on another 45 minutes of non-baseball, so that the actual game started at 8:45pm.

Yep.

Game ended up being fast enough to make up for most of it though.

Paps

Nice that the whole country got to see a typical Papelbon outing.

by RickD on Jul 14, 2009 10:43 PM EDT reply actions

You're not kidding.

Edge of your seat; almost blowing it. Yet, 3 up 3 down and finishing off with a K.

he really used the whole ballpark, didn't he?

and a bit of the air out of the ballpark, thanks to Carl Crawford.

by RickD on Jul 14, 2009 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep.

Hope to God teams don’t LOL at Theo if he tries to trade him now.

by bdalebs on Jul 15, 2009 12:18 AM EDT up reply actions

heh

and now Paps is the pitcher of record. Could get a W out of this. :)

by RickD on Jul 14, 2009 10:53 PM EDT reply actions

and he did

’Gratz to Paps for achieving the most dubious statistic.

IIRC, recently in a game completed several months after it had started, a pitcher got a W for the Nats (or against the Nats) after he’d been traded to a different team.

by RickD on Jul 14, 2009 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Embree got a W recently sans pitches.

Caught a runner at 1st. Of course, the baseball god(s) got him back with a comebacker that shattered his lower leg.

I kinda feel bad for Wale....

At his age odds are he isn’t going to see an All Star game again. It would have been a classy move to let him pitch an early inning.

by ruktuim on Jul 14, 2009 10:57 PM EDT reply actions

Meh.

Who knows? He could pitch for another 10 years, the way he throws. SportsCenter made a good point a few weeks ago – he could legitimately reach 300 wins if he gets 12 wins every year for the next decade.

AL wins again

I think part of the winning streak can be thanks to how good the AL bullpen has been, esp. Rivera.

by RickD on Jul 14, 2009 11:22 PM EDT reply actions

MVP - probably Granderson

His triple scored the go ahead run.

Nope.

“Kyle” Crawford, according to Selig.

I suspect Francona is happy

I believe the plan was that Wake would be the extra-inning insurance. Maddon might have thought about bringing him in had the game not been close, but in a tight game, his plan was Papelbon/Nathan/Rivera for the 7th/8th/9th.

And who knows? Wake is young for a knuckleballer. :)

by RickD on Jul 14, 2009 11:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Decent game

But it certainly would have been nice to see Wakefield actually, you know, like, pitch. I guess he’s long relief guy if needed, but it’s still a shame.

by lone1c on Jul 14, 2009 11:25 PM EDT reply actions

REALLY glad Beckett didn't pitch

just 2 days after throwing a complete game

by dsharp on Jul 14, 2009 11:27 PM EDT reply actions

agree completely

I believe he wasn’t even in the bullpen.

I suspect Wake would have thrown five innings before Beckett pitched one.

by RickD on Jul 14, 2009 11:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Now, that SUCKED ASS

Worst AS Game ever.

I enjoyed it, aside from Papelbon still pulling his drama queen stuff.

I like Pena, I’m glad he stepped in for Pedroia.

stat for the superstitious: the yankees are 6-17 this year against teams with predominantly red uniforms: royals, angels, redsox, phillies, washington.

by spinz on Jul 15, 2009 5:43 PM EDT reply actions

Too bad the Royals wear blue.

Ya know, like Royal blue?

@bs_uf15bosox9be:OverTheMonster-ALLERGEN WARNING:May contain PB.

by bdalebs on Jul 15, 2009 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Plus, including the Royals doesn't help make a point

the Yankees are 2-1 against KC, 0-8 against us, 2-4 against LA, 1-2 against Philly, and 1-2 against Washington. Also, how red does a team need to be to count as predominantly red?

ZING! ZANG! ZUNG!

by crabchowdah on Jul 15, 2009 7:39 PM EDT up reply actions

royals somehow squeezed in there because of the kansas city chiefs :P

and red teams were pretty much teams that had red hats.

and it was a very silly observation not to be taken seriously.

by spinz on Jul 16, 2009 1:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Now that is a potential stat I like!

When the Sox wore their all red tops the other night, I was wondering if their record when they wore such shirts was better percentage-wise than when they did not. How could one find out such important material facts as this??

BTW, I have always felt that my golf game depended on the hat I wore, but I have not had too much luck proving that one yet.

So...

Since Buchholz was called up because we had two starters in the All-Star game, but neither pitched, does Buch still start? Probably, I’m guessing.
