When a guy like Mauer, an excellent natural hitter, ends up in the derby? I can’t help but feel bad when guys like Pujols, Howard, and Fielder come up and with no big effort put up rounds of 15 or 16 while he struggles to get his 5…

Mauer's got an excellent power swing.
He hasn’t used until this season though, which in why he’s shown so much more power.

He knows how to hit a ball. His swing is great and this year he has been able to show some power. At this point, assuming his power numbers aren’t a fluke, I would give him the advantage in the HR derby over say Howard who has one mighty swing but has issues just making contact with the ball. When Howard hits the ball… he HITS the ball but making contact is half the battle, leading to his high K rate. I wouldn’t say he has an advantage over Pujols or Fielder though, those guys make good contact and have good power. Of course it may not be an issue because they have old guys throwing it right where they want it the whole night.
My vote went to Pujols, it’s hard to vote against that guy right now.

and I think the reason he didn’t want to be in it was because he embarassed himself in a previous Derby. I’m glad that none of our players are participating because I’ve heard that it really messes up your swing, and Bay (and all the other Sox) does not need that.

I would say the AL East and NL West are about even pitching wise, just from observation. Facing the whole NL probably helps him though.

Mine's pretty young...
Not too expensive. Hanley and Longo both have big deals. Dusty’s pretty cheap, contract growth should balance with Pujols getting older/leaving in FA.
