Dustin Pedroia out of All-Star game
Dustin Pedroia will not be the American League starting second baseman at this year's All-Star game because he will be with his pregnant wife who had labor complications earlier this week.
Tampa Bay's Carlos Pena has been chosen to replace Pedroia.
It's unfortunate for Pedroia, but it's a no-brainer. Pedroia has to be with his wife in these times and the All-Star game is just that -- a game. Let's hope everything ends OK with Pedroia, his wife and child.

The Pena pick is an absolute joke.
Maddon and Manuel have been total homers so far.

I wouldn't go that far.
The average isn’t pretty, but he’s leading the league in HRs and has an OPS over .900. It’s Madden’s prerogative, and if he wants to reward his #1 masher over the last three years, then that’s his call.
I’m glad for Carlos. I’m willing to bet he’s the first all-star from Haverhill, ever.
Manny ain't the only bad man.

I would.
He’s a below-average starting 1st baseman in the AL.

Certainly NOT All-Star quality.
Let’s not forget that Maddon had to go out-of-position to grab him. Other IF worth more that weren’t given the spot:
Ian Kinsler
Robinson Cano
Marco Scutaro
Chone Figgins
Scott Rolen
Joe Crede
Paul Konerko
Miguel Cabrera
Russel Branyan
How about we throw in OFs?
Shin-Soo Choo
Franklin Gutierrez
Juan Rivera
Adam Lind
Bobby Abreu
JD Drew
Statistically speaking he was the 16th best pick. Way to go Maddon. Joke pick.

I just hope Beckett throws a CG today
and then asks out of the ASG too.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

This
"It's designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything is new again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops, and leaves you to face the fall alone". A. Bartlett Giamatti

+ 1 Hope Maddon doesn’t want revenge for over using Kazmir last year (not that Tito had a choice)

Peña isn't an all star...
Russel Branyan should take his place.

KINSLER.
Replace a 2B WITH a 2B, esp. one who probably should have beat DP out to begin with.

Exactly
Now all four infielders from Tampa are in the game. I’m not comfortable with depending on that for the win late in the game.
Bills make me wanna SHOUT!

Actually, the all-star game is less than a game
It’s a pointless exhibition, and it’s a travesty that home field advantage in the World Series depends on its outcome, especially when the managers select less deserving players as replacements for the guys who can’t be there.

Yes, we know.
But we need the AL to win it.

Not really
I’d like to see the Sox clinch the World Series at home this year. That only happens if the AL loses the ASG.

Assuming a sweep?
Keep the bad karma to yourself.

Look at their history
Since the start of the curse, the Sox have been in the Series six times: 1946, 1967, 1975, 1986, 2004, and 2007. Four times they lost in seven, twice they swept. So if they want to clinch at home, they have to host games 3-5.
And if anyone thinks I’m really serious about this, I have some real estate in South Florida to sell you.

There was no curse....
If the Sox were curse by anything it was bad management, yes including the racist Yawkeys.

I wouldn't be so presumptuous
As the Sox know, there is a difference between the regular season and the post season. the pace is different, and if one key player like Ells isn’t hitting in the ALCS, it can spell big trouble, or if
Beckett or Lester have one bad outing, as Lester did with the Rays last year.

It wasn't just one player.
SS, 1B (Kotsay) and CF were all holes in the lineup. With Beckett a shadow of himself and the offense scuffling it’s amazing we pushed the series to Game 7.
