No getting around it.
Despite what we might've thought was in everyone's best interests, the Sox didn't pack up their gear and leave town after last night; we've got another game with the O's this afternoon @ 1:35 EDT.
At the very least, the members of our bullpen should get some hearty cheers at any moment that they step on the field; whether sarcastic cheers from the O's fans or...sarcastic cheers from visiting Red Sox fans.
Josh Beckett takes the mound this afternoon, and that's quite a relief. No offense to Wake or Brad Penny, but he's simply THE guy we need out there when we're feeling iffy about the pen. His opponent is Brad Bergesen. I know nothing about Brad Bergesen. That's about to change for all of us:
Not bad. Actually, a great line overall if you can get around the fact that we normally see good starters as being able to get strikeouts, and Bergesen really doesn't.
Use some listerine to get that bad taste out of your mouth from last night, and comment away.

My semester is over on July 16th & I’m taking a BIG trip around Europe before I come back.

That hit by Lugo was his typical, anemic ground ball bouncer that usually results in a DP. It was extreme luck that allowed it to barely go through a hole. Hardly an endorsement for good contact hitting, but he did get it done this time with a lot of luck, IMO.

Riddle me this, Batman. A team blows a 9-run lead in the last two innings one game. In doing so, four of their top relief pitchers allow 10 runs. The next day the same team ties the game in the 9th inning against the opposition’s two best relievers, despite being down by 4 runs.
The following players are among those responsible for the 9th inning comeback: A CF with iffy on-base skills, a Quad-A 3rd-string firstbaseman, a catcher more known for his defense, and the team’s 4th OF. Remember, all of this happened with two outs. Is this an example of “consistent real talent”?
Two innings later, the most hated player on the team drives in the winning run and the team that blew a large lead one night wins an improbable comeback the next day.
Where’s the momentum, professor? Are Tito and Theo the authors of the win? Perhaps you can explain.

Anecdotes versus expectations
Let me try this. Long term momentum is the ability for a team to consistently perform to reach a goal It is a, no the, cardinal sign of talented players working together of as a team The lack of it leads to dead end isolated hits and many men left on base. From a pitching standpoint, it would be consistently pitching up to your average ability or better (key emphasis on consistent). Anecdotal examples and stories tell you nothing about a team. The story you told is more about anecdotes than consistent long term momentum, so in that respect we know little about this Sox team. The big loss 2 nights ago was most likely caused by a quick spike in temporary momentum for the Orioles for some reason. Last night’s Sox win hopefully is a result of more consistent longer term momentum for this team to be a playoff winner. If that is the way it is, then we should be okay, but that big big letdown and loss two nights ago could surely have been a sign of some weakness. We will see. Hopefully a temporary weakness at best because the Sox will need all their long term, consistent momentum to beat the Rays and Yankees out of a playoff berth.

Killing momentum versus sustaining it.
Nobody can deliver in the clutch all the time, and conversely, even marginal players come through occasionally. However to win consistently, the team has to hold onto its momentum in clutch situations to get winning results. If Lugo had hit that ball as a liner, I would have been happier no matter if it was caught or not. The fact that he has let this team down so many times with that exact little ground ball bouncer is not a good sign. You guys must be desperate if you see that hit as a new Lugo. Do not forget how many DP and strikeouts this guy had last year, as well as one of the longest batting slumps in team history.
Maybe Randy has not seen enough of Lugo, but I have. It is not personal, but just my observation that he is not a quality, momentum sustaining player.

The whole point of it is that momentum really hasn’t been proven to exist outside of a single game. It may seem like momentum when a team goes on a long streak, but it’s usually just a coincedence of random odds being strung together. Good teams will win a lot of games, and eventually those wins will start running together.

I am still convinced someone sold their soul in Baltimore last night.
I have now have 2 games in my pocket for the end of the year. The rainshortedn one that they called – AFTER IT HAD stoped raining against The Fish. And that one from last night.
We miss playoffs or Home Field or Div by 2 games or less. I will be looking back at those games.
