Boras expected to ask $50million for Strasburg
Now I know that this is just Boras acting like a jackass to trying and bump the initial offer up from the Nats and I also know that this will never happen, but now can you see the logic of Dunn's contract being a priority for the Nats to move. Boras claims he has Japanese teams interested in Strasburg and we all know he is willing to send his client(s) to an independent league as a negotiation tactic. The economy does have an effect on all teams, even the Yankees are claiming they cannot add payroll.
So not to dreg up the old Johnson v. Dunn argument, but I do believe one of the pro-Johnson arguments, that he will cost less in terms of prospects, is not as persuasive any longer. Nats could very well need to come up with $30 million for just Strasburg and probably another $5-10 million for the #10 pick (especially if its another Boras client).
Just as a secondary debate: Boras is going to jack the amateur draftees slot price up so much with Strasburg, no small market team will ever be able to sign a 1-10 pick in the near future until MLB steps in and puts in a rookie salary cap similar to the NBA. You know in 2010 Boras will have a client in the top 5 and claim that if Strasburg got this money, so should this client. This is great for the Red Sox, bc talent will continue to slip into the late 1st round and players the Red Sox should never have a chance to draft/sign will be available, but this is horrible for MLB. If you are the worst team in baseball and have a budget, you cannot trade your pick, you cannot sign the best talent...what do you do?

No player should ever make that much before ever stepping on the professional field, football is the same way. Boras can shove it if he thinks any team in top 10 (presumably a small market team) would pay that much for a PROSPECT.

Maybe
the assumption always was Strasburg=20 million. It is hard to understand how a team like the Nats, or anyone else actually, would do that for a guy who is 2 years away and might never throw a lot of innings due to injury. I agree that if indeed the Nats due want to do it, they need to shed payroll. However, nothing has indicated that Dunn is available anyway (unless I missed it); all chatter (which could be wrong) seems to indicate that there are several available Nationals, but Dunn is not one of them

Apparently
when Boras said, ‘If I can get Manny $45 million, I can sell someone a city in France!’ he wasn’t kidding.

The NFL draft is broken, plain and simple.
I hope that baseball doesn’t go that way, too. The failure rate in baseball is too high to support Dice-K-like posting fees for kids who have never played on a professional level. Strasburg could easily flame out in AAA.

or
have a serious injury in the minors. At least most NFL first rounders play. Ever heard of Hochevar, Bush, Bullington, Matt Anderson, Kris Benson, Paul Wilson, Ben McDonald…(well I am sure you have for some of these guys…)-these were some #1 overall pick busts in the last few years.

All of these teams have budgets for player development that are seperate from their major league payrolls.
While no one budgets $50M, I’m not sure we should assume that the nats would take money from their major league roster to fund Strasberg. It might mean that they can’t sign any big time amateur free agents or draft anyone else that is looking for big signing bonuses.
I think he’ll get $15-20M. Anyone know the biggest bonus ever? I know Alvarez got $6M last year.

7 million is a fine number
Because if strausberg doesn’t like it, let him work at macdonalds for the winter and go back into the draft next year. I just hope he doesn’t burn his pitching hand in the french fry grease…
