Omar Vizquel

There is a rumor about Omar Vizquel being a possible option to play SS.  He was asked about his desire to play in Boston:

'It seems every time the Red Sox need a shortstop, my name gets brought up,' Vizquel said. 'Now, I don't think I'm in a good position to leave. We're winning here, we have a good thing going. I don't know if Texas would really let me go. We'll see. Maybe later in the season? Who knows. I don't want to close any doors.'

Vizquel went on and stated that he 'wishes the Red Sox made a play for him when they had a chance.'

If things dont pick up with Lugo, I say YES, YES and YES to Vizquel.  The guy is a beast in the field and I am more than willing to give up production at the plate to have this guy patrolling the middle infield.

I wouldn't mind it

If he can be had for a reasonable price, I’d take him in a second

Sure, but...

…it’d be far more prudent to see how Lowrie performs when he comes back before trading for a fourth shortstop, unless Lugo or Green is part of the package to get Vizquel.

Exactly.

Lowrie’s only a few weeks away – if we can hold up at least 2nd place until then, we’re fine.

But

I don’t think that the Rangers would want to trade Visquel for Lugo a huge contract who isn’t any better than Visquel

Because he hasn't even played triple A ball?

I didn't like the old one very much. I didn't see the ball there very well. - Julio Lugo on the old Yankees Stadium.

Defense doesn't get harder as you progress up the Minors.

It’s not like Vizquel is an offensive solution either.

Oh also this tidbit too:

“He also really struggles with routine plays on occasion, almost as if he has a mental block.”

We seem to attract those guys.

Bailey couldn’t catch because of the throwing thing, Lugo can’t live properly, etc.

I don't think Vizquel is available

But how much do you think the Sox are willing to trade for a bench player (because that’s what Vizquel is now)?

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

I think you'll find some folks here...

…who are panicking sufficiently that they’d trade future top-of-the-rotation starters for a bench player at this point.

I don't understand.

The Sox have been linked to Vizquel, Jack Wilson, O-Cab (having a terrible year), and I read more shortstop trade rumors every day. Just today I read that the Sox inquired about J.J. Hardy. Meanwhile, Jed Lowrie is close to returning. I just don’t understand.

Now, young Jed is no Hanley Ramirez, but surely the difference between Lowrie and any of the guys I just mentioned can’t be worth the cost of a trade unless Jack Wilson is a salary dump for a bucket of balls and an autographed Manny Ramirez jersey.

Because a lot of Sox fans are desperate to crucify Lugo and not-Lugo.

So the writers are looking for new trade possibilities that will attract rumors.

And yes. I realize I probably misused the word “crucify.”

Only if you meant it literally

Though there are days when I suspect there are Sox fans who would like to bring ancient Roman means of execution back into fashion.

I was just pre-empting the weird comments accusing me of comparing Lugo to Jesus.

That would be insane anyways – we all know that Pujols is the only sacred baseball player. :)

What does Hey-zeus Flores have to do with his? Isn’t he from Venezuela?

According to Sean McAdam: Orlando Cabrera rumor comes up short

Here’s the link.

But while the Red Sox have made inquiries on Cabrera, the cost – both in terms of his remaining salary and prospects they would have to deal – was deemed too costly.

One major league team, using defensive metrics, recently classified Cabrera as the worst defensive shortstop in the American League.

The Sox also have called around on a number of other veteran shortstops, including Pittsburgh’s Jack Wilson. But as was the case with Cabrera, the price was deemed prohibitive for a short-term fix.

I’m shoked—shocked—that Billy Beane asked too much for OC.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Both shoked and shocked?

Sounds like a nasty combination.

It seems like most of these inquiries were made for the sake of establishing the value of the prospects we have to offer, or the cost of the possible moves Theo has looked into seriously. Kinda like going to other car dealerships to see how much a similar car costs, or how much your trade-in’s worth.
