It just wasn't in the books for the Red Sox Friday night.

Penny ended up going 5.2 innings, allowed seven hits, five runs, two walks and struck out five. He looked good the first four innings. Then a big three-run home run by Ian Kinsler did him in.

The Sox's only run came in the 8th. David Ortiz singled in Jason Bay and the game finished at the 5-1 score.

Penny and the offense was "the ugly," while the bullpen was the "good." Daniel Bard went 1.1 and struck out two. Bard lowered his ERA to 0.90. Then Manny Delcarmen had a eventless 8th and Takashi Saito allowed a hit and struck out one in the 9th.

J.D. Drew did get on base four times, but that was the only bright spot of the Sox offense.

Just when it seemed like the Sox were picking up steam, this happens. But it's OK. It's not the end of the world. But it would be nice to reel of a seven or eight game winning streak. Maybe nine out of 10?

It's Jon Lester v. Derek Holland on Saturday.

Penny is a bum. Let’s face it, every game that Penny has pitched the bats were there for him. He needs to leave Boston. Hopefully Smoltz or someone can do better than him because he’s not doing the job. His K’s are horrible. He can throw the pop outs but then teams eventually run all over him by the 4th or 5th. The sox should do a trade him with Lugo. Both of them are worthless to us and we could keep Jason Bay here.

OK, so let me follow your logic: Lugo and Penny are useless, so the Sox should trade them. What do we get back? Two more useless players?

Probably gonna have to release Lugo

There has to be someone in the minors who can help out the Red Sox.

RB any news on who the Red Sox might be looking at for next weeks draft? I know the MLB draft is far different from the NBA or NFL but any rumors about kids who might be joining the organization?

I’ve heard a few different names, but unlike other drafts like the NFL and NBA, it’s a crapshoot.

Yep.

And we can’t trade draft picks. :( I really wanted Strasburg.

julio lugo is just, just terrible

I’ve come to expect it, but seriously, he doesn’t have the range to be a first baseman at this point.

I agree completely.

Between his poor, poor, poor defense at a critical position and his inability to hit in the clutch (thus killing momentum), he cuts down any chances of winning by at least 50% in any game he starts.

Rumor has it the Mets might not be adding players

IF that is true, I would re-evaluate my non-Nick Johnson stance bc he might be attainable for far less.

If nobody else is interested, the Red Sox are back at the negotiation table and the Nats lose a lot of their leverage.

Penny was an experiment, he gave us 6 wins at the #5 spot. I still say he was worth the chance.

Why won't they need players?

I thought they were getting mowed down by the injury bug.

too many holes to fill

after a point the Mets have too many positions to fill and they do not have the prospects to continue. The Mets might be calling it for 2009, i would assume that is what the rumor was about.

Penny's value drops...

But luckily we don’t have to see him much anymore. Smoltz is on the last legs of his rehab, and if he doesn’t come through, you bet your ass Buchholz is itching.
