Mike Lowell Hits the DL; Jeff Bailey Hits the ML-Roster.
Lowell has been placed on the DL due to lingering hip issues, apparently the injection he received was not immediately helpful. Jeff Bailey takes his place on the roster, and Youks becomes the everyday 3b for awhile.
It's as good a time as any for this to happen, as Lowell had been struggling and we all have seen how his range at 3b has been limited this season.
This could definitely open up more trade talks, as we might seek some help depending upon whether or not this could last longer than the required 15-day stint. Nick Johnson, anyone?

Johnson: an unqualified "meh."
I don’t think it was a universally loved idea. And any new bat the Sox acquire had better be cost-controlled both in terms of salary and talent required to procure it.

Agreed
I mean we have Kotsay and Bailey who can also play 1st. Once Lowrie gets back he is able to play 3rd and Nick Green can play SS.
Johnson isn’t going to add that much value, and what would we have to get rid of in order to get it?

It's too early to talk about a trade
Call optimistic but I think Mikey will be fine at the end of his DL stint.

LET'S HAVE SOME PATIENCE, FOR A LITTLE WHILE.
WHY DON’T WE WAIT UNTIL WE KNOW WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN WITH MIKE LOWELL? WE’VE GOT A GOOD, VERSATILE TEAM (BAILEY, KOTSAY, YOUK, LOWRIE, BALDELLI, EVEN LUGO-WHO CAN STILL HIT). LET’S GIVE THEM ALL SOME PLAYING TIME UNTIL AFTER THE ALL STAR BREAK AND IF MIKE IS OK, WE WON’T HAVE TO LOSE ANYBODY TO GET SOMEONE WHO MAY NOT FILL THE BILL. NICK JOHNSON AND JACK WILSON DO NOT REALLY IMPRESS ME VERY MUCH. LET’S KEEP THIS IN-HOUSE AS LONG AS WE CAN. HOPEFULLY MIKE LOWELL MAKES A COMPLETE RECOVERY AND WE CAN “BABY” HIM FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR. WHEN HE’S HEALTHY, MIKE’S A REAL ASSET. COME ON, MIKE, HANG IN THERE AND GET WELL SOON.

This isn't good.
My guess is that Lowell’s acetabular labrum surgery hasn’t healed properly or failed. He may have to have another operation, or his acetabular labrum is degenerating.
Lowell may have to start to develop other problems like osteoarthritis, and there is a chance he may have to retire, especially if the labrum can keep his hip socket in place.
