GameThread: Red Sox @ Nationals - June 25
Boston Red Sox at Washington Nationals, Jun 25, 2009 7:05 PM EDT
Sox go for the sweep tonight. I've been writing that a lot lately, but rarely has it happened. Let's hope the Sox can do it tonight.

i thought Dice-K wasn't starting 2nite
well, whatever, Smoltz can not do any worse than Dice-K. Here’s hoping JS gets out of trouble and becomes a “strong point” in the starting rotation
and now for josh the cut me bard
maybe a bit of revenge
He's 42-years old, coming off major surgery

Oh, I'm in no way saying I don't think he can pitch.
It’s just unfortunate it had to start like this.

Best to get the worst out of the way
He should get better. If not, there’s always Buchholz. But this is why I couldn’t understand why so many Sox fans were expecting Penny to get traded as soon as Smoltz was able to pitch.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Because we assumed the insurance policy was Buchholz.
We didn’t see Daisuke being awful.
And I disagree, I think it’s best to get the worst out of the way after you’ve re-established yourself.

Striking out Pedroia is not a good sign...
It looks like it is going to a long night for the Sox.
Oh well, the Sox won the Series, next stop Atlanta.
Besides, remember how everyone was saying the MFY not sweeping the Nats was a lost series?
Same applies for us.

( Joe Girardi on pitching to Manny Ramirez with first base open)
The Sox aren't the MFY,
We shouldn’t succumb to their fans’ psychosis.
We won the series on the road, and get ready for Atlanta which will a much tougher contest, where Nick Greene can’t hit 310 ft home runs for walk off wins..
I am more curious if Smoltz be a good starting pitcher or throw him in the pen, give him three starts, then make a decision..
+1
was going to type similar
am just saying “everyone” didn’t buy into the no sweep = failure mentality
"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."
( Joe Girardi on pitching to Manny Ramirez with first base open)
It was more of a MFY-hater joke, but still, anyone above .600 really should be able to sweep a team lower than .400
OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
Yeah.
But really, we should be able to sweep a team that’s got more losses than any other team has wins.
OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
Most Sox fans..
feel a 161-1 record is a failure. The goal is 95 wins for a division win or a wild card spot, it is an ultra marathon. Some teams like the Rockies are muy caliente, while others like the Phillies are unstoppable or just plain awful.
The team I kind of worried about isn’t the MFY, it is the Rays right now, then the MFY, then the Jays.
A .500 road trip is a raging success.
I have unrealistic expectations...
But sweeping the Nationals shouldn’t be difficult.

I think the Yanks can get Pujols for cash
"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."
( Joe Girardi on pitching to Manny Ramirez with first base open)
I wonder if Selig would let them do that.
It’d still be a trade, but you think he’d stop a trade that is effectively buying a player.

how can he stop free will?

( Joe Girardi on pitching to Manny Ramirez with first base open)
Commish has power to stop any deal, right?
OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
I dont know
I’d think labor lawyers & players unions would have a say
I’d think he could stop trades that seem suspect with no worries – like the proposed ARod to Sox deal – restructuring contracts & such
someone should research…
"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."
( Joe Girardi on pitching to Manny Ramirez with first base open)
Quick Googling comes up with multiple results of stories in which a trade required commish approval...
Junior Griffey to Chicago is top result.
OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
do you see what I am saying
e in theory he could veto any trade but I would think he would need a legit reason— like the ARod to Sox deal— I’d think he cant just willy nilly ( sp) veto trades “just because”
I think some commish approval trades are cursory. I will prob look into it further , once I unravel the Cano mystery.
"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."
( Joe Girardi on pitching to Manny Ramirez with first base open)
Ha.
I think he’d do it just to preserve what little integrity the game has left. Most of the majors is in contention, and he’s always trying to push for parity. Allowing rich teams to buy players from other teams wouldn’t really help the cause.
OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
Yeah
I don’t think parity or equal value matters because its too hard to judge… if one team needs speed and the other team needs a slugger—how do you compare ? Unless its suspect stuff like contract restructuring I’d say – “eh” if the 2 teams agree—- it is prob OK
- where are OTMs labor law attys?
"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."
( Joe Girardi on pitching to Manny Ramirez with first base open)
Tommy was on earlier...
I meant parity as in trying to keep as many teams in contention as possible.
OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
then do something about a salary cap
that luxury tax/ revenue sharing whatever its called really doesn’t do much it seems…
not sure but I’d think the union has more power than the commish in these areas…

Plus, how many games have we had an advantage in right after he pitches? Batters have to make a huge adjustment to try to hit him, and then they have to adjust back.

OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
Not really
It depends on what the Sox need and what is available. At the time it looked like the Sox may need a bat. Theo likes rentals because he doesn’t have to give up much for them. Johnson fit the bill. However, the Sox are also patient, and it looks like that patience will pay off.

Heck we put up with Dice(y)-K for what seemed “forever”
We get burned by being too patient with a few guys...
But look at Papi.
OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
Pitchers are different
If the Sox had Dontrelle Willis, there would be suicides galore for keeping him in the rotation.
Papi’s problem could be cover as long as others like Bay and Youk were hitting well. Pitchers are pretty naked if they can hit the corners or they are throwing meatballs across the plate like Smoltz right now.
Wait, who's committing suicide to keep Willis in the rotation?
And pitchers can be streakier than batters.

Wasn't one of the arguments against Dunn that he never gets a lot of ribbies?
As stupid as the argument is to begin with, he has 50 RBIs this year.
OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
The argument was that while OBP is terrific
productive outs are nice too. Ks kill.
Manny ain't the only bad man.
I remember seeing someone say that he never got enough RBIs.
It was some kinda proof that he didn’t produce.
OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
Sort of.
A D’backs fan said something about him being unproductive in Arizona, to which someone responded “40 hrs, .400 OBP”, to which someone else responded “ya but for a forty homer guy he doesn’t get enough RBIs” which led to a discussion about how perhaps maybe 180 Ks aren’t a good thing.
Manny ain't the only bad man.
You do that from memory or did you look it up on the archive?

Nope, seems to mesh with what I was remembering.
