Although now they're talking about who gets the captain's C after Tek leaves.
They think Youk should.

Pedroia.
Youk’s mentality (how he handles himself) is to time consuming as it is. His “I’m fucking pissed off because I just groundout and now my stats are .338, 23 HR, and 92 RBIs” is not team leadership quality. Don’t get me wrong, I love Youk, but he’s no captain.

So, because he's mad that he didn't do anything to help out the cause, he's a bad choice?
I’d like to see both as Capitans.

When Tek goes the C goes
In my opinion it’s too close to call.
You don’t want to slit other guys, by giving it to one player instead of the other.
Standard def.
Cheapsies in the FSN Florida group – because it’s on the secondary channel (Sun Sports), it’s not in HD. Same thing happens with Rays game, most of the time, IIRC.

Stupid Sun sports!
I hate the fact I pay to have NESN….and they make me watch the game on Sun.

They were talking about how his past 3 games maybe the best 3 game stretch ever for a pitcher.

( Joe Girardi on pitching to Manny Ramirez with first base open)
Ironic
This is immediately after Stallworth gets a month for killing a guy.
Well, I'll appreciate for you to keep my zingers outta your mouth!
I did not follow either trial/story
and am in no way defending either but need to know the facts and am certain Hall & his legal team will appeal and try for a reduced sentence. If guilty, 45 years isn’t enough, imo.
Will google the Stallworth story now
"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."
( Joe Girardi on pitching to Manny Ramirez with first base open)
Are you suggesting that manslaughter is worse than rape?
Esp. when it was a girl he was coaching? She’s supposed to be able to trust him – they always say that if someone’s abusing you, go to a parent, teacher, coach, or another trusted adult, providing they aren’t the abuser.
I’m not saying Stallworth is a much better person – he still was drinking and driving, and he should have gotten a much longer sentence (which he would have if he wasn’t able to pay off the vic’s family), but at least his was semi-accidental. Hall also molested another girl, so he’s got a record.
OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
read the opening paragraph of the Stallworth matter
Apparently, the victim’s family wanted to “put it behind them” and Stallworth reached a financial settlement was all I needed to read. I’d like to believe I could be that understanding and forgiving.
"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."
( Joe Girardi on pitching to Manny Ramirez with first base open)
I'm forgiving, but I would like to see him banned from drinking ever again, or something similar.
OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
Well, he's been banned from driving forever.
Drinking, a little harder to pull off, at least until they come up with an interlock system for a house.
The difference is intent.
Drinking and driving is a really stupid thing to do. If you drink, drive, and kill someone I think you should get way more than a month. However, he didn’t intend to kill someone. It a horrible mistake, it isn’t a violent act of abuse.
Also, the details
The prosecutors were worried about being able to get a conviction. Apparently the guy Stallworth hit ran into the street just before he got hit, so there wasn’t much Stallworth could do to avoid the accident, no matter what he did.
They have some sort of video evidence?
Or is this from Stallworth’s testimony? If the latter, could his delayed reaction from the alcohol have affected his sense of time?
OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
Hmm... I might have to look into it.
I’m intruiged.
OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
lone1c is right
Apparently the guy ran into the street nowhere near a crosswalk. Stallworth didn’t have to time to react before he hit him, sober or not. The case was determined by some Florida law that says if you get into a accident drunk, but the drunkenness wasn’t a factor in the accident, then you will get off with a reduced sentence.
by Gnick on Jun 18, 2009 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions
Wow, that's f'd up.
The guy doesn’t cross at a crosswalk, he gets punished by karma with a face full of car. Stallworth endangers himself and everyone else on the road, yet all that happens to him is a few weeks of prison (most likely a cushy cell too) and he loses money that he wouldn’t have had if he wasn’t so good at a kid’s game. Life really isn’t fair.
OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
Would you want to be punished if someone randomly ran out in front of your car and you hit and killed them?
Now, I’m not saying that his drunkenness didn’t endanger people, but the Florida legal system has determined that it did not cause the accident, so I don’t know if it would be fair to punish him on that if it didn’t have anything to do with the accident.
by Gnick on Jun 18, 2009 10:20 PM EDT up reply actions
I'd probably appreciate some sort of punishment to make me feel better.
I’m not sure I’d be able to deal with having killed someone.
I’m probably frustrated about him getting such a short sentence for the sole reason that he could afford to pay the vic’s family.
OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
Yeah
That payment part does seem a little bit unfair, the rich shouldn’t get any leg up with the legal system.
by Gnick on Jun 18, 2009 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions
I think $$ and the victim's kin's willingness to accept money plays a huge part
not being cynical about the system but see Jayson Williams’ case.
"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."
( Joe Girardi on pitching to Manny Ramirez with first base open)
But part of punishment is to prevent him from doing it again.
Huge jump, but it’d be like a serial killer being forgiven by all of his victim’s families – they still need to be put away to try to keep them from doing it again, either by separation from society or by deterrence.
OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
cant make blanket comparisons
Sadly the punishment doesn’t always fit but it works both ways
"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."
( Joe Girardi on pitching to Manny Ramirez with first base open)
Plus, how forgiving could they really be if they asked for money?
I can’t ever see myself putting a price on a loved one’s life, and esp. not haggling over it in a settlement.
OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
Plus, having just looked up the Williams case...
I’m pretty sure I’d want to punish a guy who thinks showing off a shotgun and playing with it in front of a bunch of people is okay. Either prison time or take away the guns.

OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
Does anyone feel we are wearing our pen down early in the season?
Ramon Ramirez: 32 IP
H. Okajima: 30 IP
J. Papelbon: 29 IP
M. Delcarmen: 28 IP
Takashi Saito: 23.1
D. Matsuzaka: 31 IP
(However, they are all about half of what they pitched the last couples of years 60ish IP)
You're already putting Dice-k in the pen? lol
The only Red Sox fan in a country where nobody cares about basball!
No, I just found it interesting....
Ramon Ramirez, Oki, and Paps all almost have more IPs.
I meant to put a space, but it didn’t go in.
Assigning blame?
Or setting up comparisons?
OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
I do beleave short starts by Dice-K and Penny
Had an effect on it, however I do not blame nor am I angry at Dice for being hurt.
Also Dice-K’s DL stint causes him to only have 31 IP
Only Masterson was really affected by the short stops
The others only worked an extra inning or so as a result of each of the bad starts.
Yu Darvish
So just out of curiosity I checked out some of the other Japanese pitchers. (Who were in the WBC)
To see if they are having slump years coming off the WBC. Yu Darvish makes me depressed:
Yu Darvish: (2009 Season)
ERA: 1.20, 11 GS, 8 – 2 (Four complete games), 19 BB, 83 K, 90 IP
Hisashi Iwakuma: (2009 Season)
ERA: 2.83, 11 GS, 6 – 4 (One complete game), 17 BB, 46 K, 73 IP
He wants to play for the Sox when he comes over though.
OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
I saw that
He also said he wants to win 200 games in Japan first.
The guy I really wish we could pick up is Aoki Norichika.
Once Smoltz comes back
Dice- K needs to go on the DL to recover from his “shoulder injury”
"Well let me just quote the late-great Colonel Sanders, who said...'I'm too drunk to taste this chicken.' "
-Ricky Bobby
Actually, they're right about on schedule.
This puts them in the range for about 75 IP for the season, which is a typical workload for a playoff-caliber bullpen reliever.
Did anyone see Jayson Stark's 'Most likely to get traded' nominees?
If not, here’s the link. Here’s what I found interesting:
There might be 18 players on this team who are available. And names like Adam Dunn, Josh Willingham and Joe Beimel are going to be just as prominent in the Rumor Central annals over the next six weeks as Nick Johnson. But Johnson makes the most sense. He’s about to be a free agent. He doesn’t fit in D.C. long term. He’s still an on-base machine (.415 OBP, eighth in the NL). He hits left-handers (.333 average, .536 slugging percentage). And he’s played in 20 postseason games, back in his Yankees incarnation.
“They could move Dunn,” said an executive of one team. “But the price would be way too astronomical to actually make a deal. And if they move Nick Johnson, they accomplish what they need to accomplish. They’re better off putting Dunn at first base so they can play Willingham or other people in the outfield. And they’re more likely to move Johnson than Willingham, because at least Willingham they can control.”
It kind of backs up what a few of us have been arguing here: Dunn isn’t going anywhere.
At the same time Penny’s stock is rising, though, teams that have spoken to the Red Sox report they’ve slowed down their efforts to market him. At this point, they appear likely to wait at least a couple of weeks, so they can try to figure out the mystery of Daisuke Matsuzaka and assure themselves that John Smoltz is a guy they can count on.
The Red Sox also seem like they’re in no hurry to trade for a shortstop, either, even though they’ve clearly been shopping. They hope to get Jed Lowrie back by the first week of July. And even if they still feel a need to make a move, beware of all rumors linking them to players like J.J. Hardy, whom they’d have to commit to beyond this year.
According to an official of one club, they’re “not looking for a shortstop of the future.” Lowrie is still that guy. They’re looking only for someone to get them through the year. Period. So who does that leave? Jack Wilson if he comes cheap enough? Orlando Cabrera if all else fails? Both seem like long shots. Even Phillies prospect Jason Donald no longer fits, because he’s now out longer than Lowrie after tearing his meniscus.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

It's OK
the writing is kind of juvenile. It somehow seems weak, like the choice of words don’t pack any punch.
Torre has some stories to tell though. His take on how the Sox “romanced” Schilling is neat and his obvious dislike for ARod is riotous.
Th best sports books I’ve ever read was Olney’s The Last Night of the Yankee Dynasty. It isn’t so much about the glee of seeing the Yanks fall from grace but as a baseball fan, I just loved the behind scenes stories. It is incredibly well written.

( Joe Girardi on pitching to Manny Ramirez with first base open)
Yes, but you seem to think there is more to it than I believe there is.
Can’t believe I’m going to use CNN as a source, but this article explains some of the factors that lead to me believe we shouldn’t be concerned about the lack of black players on the Sox, but instead in baseball in general: http://money.cnn.com/2007/04/13/commentary/sportsbiz/index.htm
OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
yeah
am aware of the this & the projects undertaken by Rollins, Morgan, Sabathia, etc to get more Black youth involved in baseball.
All I am saying is this: considering the Sox history, the history in & of New England – especially Boston, it looks bad and when I noticed it, I had an unsettling feeling. As mentioned before, if a homer like Peter Gammons speaks of he racial issues in Boston….I can’t see why you can’t just see what I see but maybe that is why these discussions come about so often. I am not saying Epstein is racist and I really resent how a simple and honest observation about race leads to jokes & KKK comments- rungs below my intent .
I’ve been asked 1M times how can I support the Sox…It is no secret that the running joke is the avg Sox fan is an obnoxious racist white guy..Ive heard it, you must have as well. Look, Ive been in the bleachers— back when I went to college in Boston & it wasn’t pretty at times, so I can see how the stereotype came about. I’ve managed to look past my own experiences at the park & the former & I guess current Garden because I know crowds aren’t static and cant blame all for the behavior of some.
I dont lay this on the players not coming to Boston. The environment is important and I don’t mean that in an Al Gore global warming kinda way. That is pretty much all I have to say —here anyway
"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."

Last year
The Sox had two African-American players on the 25 man roster, Crisp and Delcarmen, that’s right in line with the 8% league average.

Yes, but of Dominican descent.

OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
Okay, now I see what you mean - that it's more of Boston's fault and less the team itself.
And I can give you a simple answer to why I didn’t realize why you were concerned about that: I don’t live in Boston, and I don’t ever really hear any stories about racist activities b/c those tend not to make national headlines unless they’re really shocking. My apologies.

"It's just a tiny little nick, but it hurts when I get champagne in there."
- Jason Bay, on getting spiked scoring the winning run in ALDS Game Four.
So, if not sweeping them makes a series a failure, what does losing the series mean?
Epic Fail?

I'm missing the reference.
The second one, that is. :)

Waterworld
Cost about $200 million to make (back in 1995), and grossed less than $100 million. One of the biggest box office bombs of all time.
Oh, the movie.
I thought it broke even with international sales and VHS/DVD sales.

It also means
That the Yankee blogs are going to be lit up like a Christmas tree for the next few days.
I love those videos. :)
Also, that would require the MFY fans to find PA again.

that kinda ticks me off that the posting is so weak over there
there was one poster —bxlgrl or something like that who always made the super lame “B is for bandwagon” comment. Funny.
"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."

She's trying.
And she at least attempts to follow her team -got to give her props for that.

Question.
In case the rest of the game can’t be played tonight, what will happen?
The only Red Sox fan in a country where nobody cares about basball!
The Sox will lose
They don’t play Florida again. This is one of the problems with interleague baseball.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

We can just play it during the WS.
See ya there, Mahlins?

OK during the delay, can someone explain :
1) the Joba Rules
2) was Bard was compensation for Damon?
3) was Ellsbury compensation for Damon?
"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."
( Joe Girardi on pitching to Manny Ramirez with first base open)
1) He is not allowed to drive drunk after going to a strip club
2) Bard was compensation for Damon
3) Ellsbury was drafted a year before Bard. He and Lowrie were compensation for Orlando Cabrera.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

since i'm nowhere near home
anybody tell me what the weather looks like – are they gonna resume – or are we gonna take a 2-1 (1 hit) loss ???
I think its supposed to rain through Friday afternoon
not trying to be funny, the eastern MA forecast is nothing but rain . I would hope they would try to play if the rain just lightens up- not necessarily stops

Final game of season
let’s hope the umps know this and will stay in a delay up to the curfew. (Q: since it is the last game of the season, is the curfew not in effect???)
what? am i missing somthing? the announcers were talking like this game would have to be resumed at a later date, but obviously if this game doesnt get resumed, the sox just lose.
Yeah.
We can’t make up the game later b/c we never play the Mahlins again this season. So unless we made a side trip next time we go down to Tampa, we have no opportunity to play them for the rest of the game – ergo, they call it final, and we prolly end up losing the division by 1 game. :(

how our chances of winning this game look according to fangraph?
The only Red Sox fan in a country where nobody cares about basball!
Nope, just looking at the records of every game from the past couple decades, IIRC.
OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
Yeah, I know.
I don’t know if they even update the chances once it gets called..
OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
Alright, I give up on Mother Nature.
Night.
OverTheMonster - ALLERGEN WARNING: May contain peanut butter.
Da.
Sox lose 2-1.
(Under the circumstances, it’s probably for the best. No point in taxing the bullpen for 3+ innings when Dice-K has to take the mound tomorrow.)
