Yankees vs Red Sox recap

You know what's nice? Beating the Yankees seven straight games. That's niiice.

The Sox won 6-5 behind Tim Wakefield's solid six-inning outing: eight hits, three runs, three walks and two strikeouts. It wasn't Wake's best performance, but he kept the Yankees' offense down and that's all we can ask from him.

The offense came from a multitude of areas. Mike Lowell and Kevin Youkilis homered and George Kottaras went 2 for 4. Jason Bay, Dustin Pedroia and Kottaras each had RBIs.

Ramon Ramirez struggled in relief. RamRam gave up two runs and three hits in .2 innings of work. His ERA "ballooned" to 1.86. Hideki Okajima (1.1 IP, 1BB, 3K) earned a hold and Jonathan Papelbon worked his 15th save of the season (1IP, 1BB, 1K).

Sox go for the sweep Thursday night. The Red Sox send their No. 5 Brad Penny to the mound while the Yanks counter with their No. 1 CC Sabathia. Should be an interesting pitching matchup.

If we win tomorrow we’ll clinch at least a season split of the series. Wow.

Not yet

They play 18 times, 10 times in the second half of the season.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Good point.

I was thinking 16 games per year for some reason.

2-1 in the series is really all I could ask

But let’s see if we can steal a game tomorrow against these motherfuckers.

Where's

LouieTheLip and the disucssion of head-to-head record…?

by Buzzy on Jun 11, 2009 8:38 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

He made a big deal about that. But head-to-head record really doesn’t matter—except in tie-breakers. The Sox won 8 of 12 from the MFY in 1999 and lost the ALCS in 5 games. The MFY were undefeated against the Tribe in 2007 and got bounced in the ALDS, and last year the Orange County Angels owned us except when it counted.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Is Wakefield getting a lot more fly outs this year?

Has it always been that Wakefield gets a lot of lazy pop flies, or is this a relatively new development. Because it certainly seems that what he’s getting these days are some ground hits and tons of fly outs, when it seems like it used to be the reverse (a few line drives and lots of grounders leading to outs).

Has

always been a bit of a FB pitcher. His FB% this year is only 0.5% different than his career.

I thought that Wake

was leaving a few up last night. Sut said that Wake was not at his best and I have to agree, but hey, a win is a win.

Yep, Wake didn't have his best stuff last night

But he still gave the Sox a QS.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Anyone else not convinced

CC is going to dominate? I have read a lot of sports writers who are convinced CC is going to break this losing streak and frankly knowing how CC pitches in “big games”, I am going with Penny.

Plus Penny could be pitching for his jersey tonight. He is most likely gone, but if can pitch a shut out maybe Theo reconsiders keeping him around.

I expect good things tonight and losing will absolutely crush the Yankees and their new found wind tunnel momentum.

bad bet

Penny is pitching to a good hitting team and has a batting average against of over 300. CC is pitching well, and I am not sure that a game on the 11th of June qualifies as a “big game.”
Hope you are right though!

Big game as in lots of pressure. Agree the game really means nothing but if the Yankees lose OH NOES!!!

I'm with Buzzy

Tonight’s match-up really favors the MFY. I also hope you’re right, SoxAcumen.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

if we lose tonight

its because we have brad penny starting instead of burgeoning ace clay buchholz. i think we will win, but dont be surprised if penny doesnt get it done. clay should be our fifth starter.

Buchholz will get his time. Don’t worry.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

well if the Sox do win

wow, wouldn’t that be even more demoralizing for the Yankees…

Especially if Penny throws a no-hitter

:-)

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.
