Game 58: Beckett dominates Yanks
Yankees vs Red Sox coverage
Yankees vs Red Sox recap
Quick game recap here -- I haven't had Internet for many hours. Just got it back...
What can we say about this game that wasn't said in the Open Thread? Josh Beckett was awesome (6IP, 1H, 0R), the offense was on and the Red Sox didn't commit an error. Does it get any better than that?
The Red Sox are now 6-0 against the Yankees this season. Also, this game was the first time the Yankees were shut out all season.
Last note: Daniel Bard pitched. He threw a 100-MPH "piece of cheese with hair on it" right on A-Rod's hands. It. Was. Awesome.
A couple of Ws are on the mound tonight: Tim Wakefield v. Chien-Ming Wang. Let's hope the winning streak against the Yankees continues!

Beautiful game
and you didn’t even mention Papi’s blast-a shot to dead CF in the heavy mist with the wind blowing in. One thing about the gun-I know it said that Bard hit 100 at least 4 times, but on the feed I was watching (the lame NY one) the gun was screwed up all night. Many times on curveballs it registered “95.” Either way, Bard had some nasty stuff.

From the photo caption
“Boston Red Sox closer Daniel Bard delivers to the New York Yankees in the ninth inning of a baseball game at Fenway Park in Boston on Tuesday, June 9, 2009.”
It’s a little premature to call Dan Bard the closer. This year is his major league debut, and he’s being used as the 6th option out of the pen (behind Paps, Oki, RamRam, Saito and Delcarmen).
Elise Amandola and/or her editor at the AP need to keep better track of these things.

He is A closer.
Maybe not THE closer, but that’s his intended role.

He is a reliever..
If he can throw a 98mph cutter that hit the corners, he can be a closer. He pitched against a demoralize Yankee ball club. He wasn’t bad. The key for him to be a good reliever is to be thrown in a pressure cooker situation and shut down the side, with 2 bases or base loaded situation with one or no outs.
I wouldn’t be surprise that one reason he was put in the game was to help his trade value. He is still a bit raw, but what he has shown is very impressive.
We will see what happens tonight with Wake. If Wake can do 6-7 innings, that will be great. I always dread watching a Wake game, because it is either lights out, or as fun as getting audited.

Lets make it being groomed as a closer.
But the role is definitely there. He was used in that role in the minors, he’s a big strikeout guy, and it’s no secret that Papelbon is unlikely to stick around when he’s FA eligible.
