You'll probably never witness an unassisted triple play in your lifetime, right? (There have been only 14.) Or see an intentional walk with the bases loaded. (Six.) Or watch one player hit two grand slams in an inning. (Once.)
But you can see something right now that hasn't been around in baseball since the late 1800s: a switch-pitcher.

I posted this b/c of the lack of research and assumptions Reilly made:
Ahem:
- Unassisted Triple Plays in MLB history, including 4 since 2000
- IBB’s with Bases Loaded, including Hamilton’s last year
- Fernando Tatis’s 2 GS in 1 Inning, 4/13/1999
Most people HAVE seen all three of these “rare” plays – hurray for technology that allowed for this to happen!
I think he means "live"
It’s one thing to see it happen on TV or over teh Interwebs, but it’s probably quite a different thing to see it as it’s actually unfolding.
(For example, the only people who got a really good view of Ellsbury’s steal of home as it unfolded were the Fenway fans that night.)
+1
Maybe its because I’m from Boston, but I just don’t understand how people pick Reilly’s side of the purported Simmons-Reilly dispute. First off, it’s not clear to me that Reilly’s writing is superior – and since neither is Robert Penn Warren, its not a category that there’s much of an edge in. I also find Reilly’s stuff much less engaging and I just think he’s like the dad-trying-to-be-cool character. It comes off as forced. When writes on serious topics, his underlying failures as a writer become more apparent and its distracting…
I basically want Rick Reilly and Jonny Gomes to survive a two-man plane crash in the remote Andes, with no food.

Also...
…Joe Girardi can’t adequately manage a standard bullpen. Meaning the Yankees are either going to have to pretend that they’ve hired twins who are relievers – one pitching righty and one pitching lefty, or Girardi’s going to lose his sh!t and go catatonic…
