Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays, May 3, 2009 1:38 PM EDT

Good G. Brad Penny again. I know I probably sound pretty negative right there, but I'm not sure how else to feel about him right now. Tired, tired, tired of how he's pitching. I would love nothing more for him to prove me wrong.

My favorite/least favorite Rays pitcher goes today, James Shields. How is he my favorite and least favorite? Well, I really don't like him, but for whatever reason he's the Rays' pitcher I'd most like to steal and put on the Sox.

...I can't explain it.

Kickoff at 1:38 EDT. (WTF is with the 8s in the start times down there? Is it a dome thing?)

Can Brad Penny please, please, please pitch well?

Pretty Please?

Because John Smoltz will knocking at the door soon.

Screw Smoltz

We’ve got Buchholz and Bowden ready RIGHT NOW. Given the strain on the pen, we should seriously consider bring one of them up. Then we can move Masterson back to the pen for setup / long-relief duty.

I was just themed in on the “Buy Cheap/Big Rewards Pitchers”

Wonder is Bucholz is over that Hamstring injury. But Bowden for sure.

I think Penny will be good for someone.

I hope it’s the 2009 Red Sox. There’s still time for him to come around, and it’s not like he’s the only Sox pitcher who hasn’t been doing well. Beckett, Lester and Masterson -basically everyone whose name doesn’t rhyme with “Jim Takefield” – have all been mediocre or bad to start the season.

You can play Varitek and especially Lugo and likely loses, OR

you can play George Kottaras and Green and likely win! That’s seems pretty simple and obvious to me. Now maybe managing is tantamount to rocket sicence, but I kind of doubt it. Francona better start wising up or his judgement may well be in question.

by NG on May 3, 2009 3:15 PM EDT reply actions

Can't sit combined 14 million a year if they're "healthy" every day

Theo needs to deal with the Lugo situation. Tough to trade a guy who plays with cement on his shoes in the field and makes 9 mil. Although I’m in favour of the same sort of trade that got Everett out of town, essentially a "we pay his salary and you send us a bucket of balls and/or darren oliver

Have you been watching Crawford?

He is not even waiting more than one pitch to steal on Varitek’s old and weak arm. Varitek’s hitting or lack thereof is starting to look like last year, so I have to disagree with you on Kottaras. At least he can hit. Now Lugo and momentum sucking, ERRRRRRR! Put the two (Lugo and Varitiek) together, and down memory lane as in last year we go.

by Drugs Delaney on May 3, 2009 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions

A stolen base

is more about the pitcher than the catcher.

Penny has a high kick in his delivery, making it alot easier for baserunners to steal off him.

Remember last sunday when Tacoboy stole home? That was because of Pettitte, not Posada. The longer the delivery, the harder it is to throw someone out

by Charged on May 3, 2009 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Well why don't we just designate all singles today to be doubles

( Joe Girardi on pitching to Manny Ramirez with first base open)

by MassGal on May 3, 2009 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

It was more on Pettitte

For not checking (after Posada told him that Ells was a major threat) and for having such a long delivery even with runners on. Posada wasn’t expecting it, but by the time he had the ball, it was much too late.

by Charged on May 3, 2009 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions

uh huh

but its a team fail, battery fail, whatever you want to call it because Posada didnt even react. I just watched it again ( see below- have it on dvr, watching it bc today’s game sux).

As a Sox fan, I’d like to think Ells deserves the credit moreso than the MFYers get the blame.

Lost in all this mess

is the fact that Penny is pitching really well. Disregarding the first inning, his stuff looks really good. That 4th inning was more bad luck/shitty defense than Penny’s pitching. If he can do this every game, I’d be thrilled to have him as a fifth starter. But that’s a pretty big if.

by MassGal on May 3, 2009 3:34 PM EDT reply actions

It is all about weaknesses with Lugo and Varitek,

but especially Lugo. We are self destructing by playing these guys (especially Liugo) and unnecessarily so. If you have any influence or pull with Sox management, make these 2 bad guys go away, especially Lugo!

by NG on May 3, 2009 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Quit being irrational

By benching two players, we are going to win every game we play? Can you blame Tek and Lugo for todays loss? Lugo made an error yet if he didn’t, we would still be down by a run. And as far as crawford stealing, it was only turned into a run once, not every single time.

by Charged on May 3, 2009 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Excuses, excuses, excuses.

See my post about the last 16 games! What are you trying to justify? Lugo will never be a good, winning player, and Varitiek’s good games are numbered to be sure. We lose little by replacing Varitek, but emotionally we gain a ton by replacing Lugo. You can just see it and feel it.

by NG on May 3, 2009 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Look

I hate Lugo aswell, and I am not too high on Tek either, but you are thinking in a borderline moronic way at this point. If you really think Nick Green or George Kottaras are viable replacements to Lugo and Tek, I don’t think we are watching the same baseball games. Green already has 6-7 errors. Yeah, he has some RBIs and works the bat better than Lugo (IMO), but he isn’t everyday material. Lugo is just thrown in there until Lowrie gets back in a couple weeks. After that, he will be benched. Hopefully for life.

Tek on the other hand, first it was his offense that was a problem. Now that he has actually hit 4 bombs and has a .250 average, thats not the problem. Now its the fact that “He cant throw out runners”. Really? Thats why you don’t like the guy? Tek can call a game better than almost any catcher in the league. It’s a shame that everyone loses sight of that.

by Charged on May 3, 2009 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

You will never win over NG.

When he dislikes a player, he really dislikes the player.

by BTLove on May 3, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not trying to win, just trying to be rational about the subject

Calling for a catchers head just because he cannot throw out a runner is idiotic. As I stated before, it’s more about the pitchers delivery than it is about the catchers arm.

Lugo on the otherhand, we all hate him. There is just nobody better right now.

by Charged on May 3, 2009 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions

In Medicine, there is a constant

complaint that if you pay Docs for outcomes only, they will not take the hard cases. Sure Green might have some errors, but he tries for everything. Friggin Lugo looks like he has on a heavy lead uniform with the resultant mobility and arm speed of a Varitek. He should make no errors with the limited ranger he has.

i swear to god

this is the worst defensive team we’ve had in a long, long time

by Tippecanoe on May 3, 2009 3:58 PM EDT reply actions

Not sure where that's coming from?

Lowell’s not bad, DP’s solid, Youk’s a fielding machine, Ells is good, Bay’s not flashy but gets the job done. Leaves Tek, Lugo, Drew. 2/3 aint bad

by jacques45 on May 3, 2009 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Drew is good, or at least average.

He is better than Bay. SS is our only really bad defensive position.

And Tippecanoe, remember all of the teams before 2005? The 2004 team was horrid defensively before the Nomar trade. Nomar, Belhorn, Millar were all bad defensively and the OF was alamost as bad with Damon, Manny and Trot.

by BTLove on May 3, 2009 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Defensive Efficiency

Sox are 24th in the majors in it, after being 2nd in 2007 and 5th in 2008.

could end up being SSS, but man they look awful out there.

by Tippecanoe on May 3, 2009 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Def Eff, or Defensive Efficiency, is the rate at which balls put into play are converted into outs by a team’s defense. Def Eff can be approximated with (1 – BABIP), if all you have is BABIP, but a team’s actual Def Eff is computed with

by Charged on May 3, 2009 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions

1 – ((H + ROE – HR) / (PA – BB – SO – HBP – HR))

Thats the actual formula. Don’t know if you are a baseball scientist or not.

by Charged on May 3, 2009 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions

So its basically BABIP, just from a team perspective.

by BTLove on May 3, 2009 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions

How much of that is skill and how much is luck?

I wonder because we often talk about high BABIP’s as if they will regress to the mean. Do we expect Defensive Efficiency to regress? or is it supposed to be more of an indication of the fielders’ skill?

by BTLove on May 3, 2009 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it is supposed to indicate skill, now that I think about it.

When a pitcher has a high BABIP, one of the explanations is always the bad defense. But, as Tippencanoe says, it is early.

by BTLove on May 3, 2009 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep.

We’ll be fine.

  • Lowell’s figuring out how the hip works.
  • Youk’s already made his 1 error for the year.
  • Pedroia will be fine once he gets his offense fixed.
  • Lugo doesn’t count as a Sox, and Green’s only temporary with his hopping throws.
  • Bay’s not great, but he can offset it by learning the Monster.
  • JD just needs to hustle and be more willing to gun it.
  • Ells is a god with the glove, but needs to let Bay and JD get the one’s they can if a throw is needed.

Latest Lugo win-loss tally

Similarly to what I wrote yesterday, here is the updated tally on this concept:

Whether you believe in the metaphysical or not, some trends should not be ignored under the banner of "just in case"! According to my calculations in the last 17 games, the Sox have won 13 and lost 4. The one absolute common factor for all the wins was Julio Lugo did not start, and the one absolute factor for all the losses was Lugo started. Since the guy is a lousy player and a momentum sucker of first order, it hardly seems necessary to go into the realm of the metaphysical to assign some relation here, but do whatever you have to make a connection. NO MORE LUGO STARTS!!!
