Random Trade Speculation Thread: Adrian Gonzalez
Reading through some talk over at MLBTR two trade scenarios were discussed as possible fits for the Red Sox. Now before everyone goes crazy this was speculation or rumor nothing solid, however some of the writers of the blog believe a good match up for the Padres would be the Red Sox in a Adrian Gonzalez deal. AG is an excellent hitter with power and a lefty, and I would assume Youk would move to third and AG would be at 1st.
Knowing full well that some here would never trade Clay Buchholz (Lol some still think that trading him for Johan Santana would be a mistake...) would you deal some of the other prospects, Bowden, Bard, etc. and some of the regs like Delcarmen and Lowrie in a package to get Gonzales? If you like this move what would you believe it would take to pry AG from the Padres?
Another possible trade talked about was a straight up trade Bowden for Brandon Wood of the Angels. I know little about Wood other than the fact he is a young SS, who can hit and is on the top of the Angels prospect list. He is currently blocked by Figgy at 3b and Aybar at SS. Bowden is also similarly blocked by our surplus of arms, so Bowden for Wood?
Love to hear people's ideas and opinions on both rumors.
Thanks

Adrian Gonzalez is a STUD.
I wanted the Sox to trade for him in the pre-Youk emergence days while Gonzalez was with Texas. That said it would most certainly take Buchholz to get the deal done. Gonzalez is an all-star outside of Petco. Hell, he’s an all-star in Petco, too.
Mike Lowell is getting the job done at 3B, despite a decline in defense (range). Given how our starting pitching has executed, I think it’s more important this season to maintain pitching depth.

Why would San Diego trade Gonzalez?
He is good, young, cheap, and a local kid. Gonzalez will make $3 million this year, $4.7 million next year, and the Padres have a $5.5 million option for 2011. Since we’re speculating, if San Diego entertained offers, they’d want Buchholz, Bard, Lars, and another top prospect at least.
While Gonzalez would be a long-term offensive upgrade over Lowell, 3B/1B isn’t the Sox’ problem right now. Boston’s needs are more along the lines of DH, SS, CF. The Sox aren’t going to look for a DH unless Papi still isn’t hitting by late June (this organization does not panic very often). They won’t be looking for a SS until they see what the in-house option (Lowrie) will give them. As for CF, I still think they’re high on Ellsbury. I don’t think the Sox would trade for Gonzalez unless a need develops, or they can get him very cheap.
Your projected package—Bowden, Bard, MDC, Lowrie (who is hurt)—probably wouldn’t be enough. More importantly, it would weaken the Sox this year by stripping the team of two important bullpen arms and their likely starting SS. The Sox will need their pitching depth as the season goes on and their offense, when healthy, is fine.
As for Brandon Wood, what would LA want? I’m betting a lot. But, if he is blocked by Aybar and Figgins, the Angels can’t be too high on him. Bowden may be blocked this year. But he is very young. He’ll get a shot. The Sox think long-term.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Its common knowledge
San Diego is trying to dump salary and the names I used were examples not a package, hence the use of etc..
Again, its speculation from people who write for MLBTR, i thought the subject was interesting enough to speculate the possibility.

its always fun to speculate.
But its pretty hard to believe they would trade Adrian Gonzalez.

Exactly.
His salary isn’t exactly draining funds.

Gonzalez
Professional hitter, I would love to have a bat like that in the lineup. He is signed through 2011, not sure what the Sox would have to give up. Package of Kelly/Bowden or Buch?
One thing I don’t understand is why San Diego trade Gonzalez. Its obviously a team in a rebuilding stage, a young 30+ Home Run guy a year is a perfect piece to build around.

"Random" is right.
These deals would NEVER go down. Trading with the Angels is like trading with the Yankees – why make your likely playoff competition stronger? As for Adrian Gonzalez, any package would revolve around Lars, and the Sox still have Lowell signed through next year. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have AGon on our team, it’s just the price would be too high and the deal is improbable to begin with.

While we're at it...
…why not offer Lugo for Pujols? That deal has about as much chance of happening.

No way.
Lugo is an integral part of the 2009 Red Sox (whipping boy, hard-luck case, fun guy to root for when he’s hitting well and not making errors). All Boo-Holes would bring us is wins.

What I'm trying to say is.
Lugo brings intangibles to the table, and that’s why St Louis would have to offer more than just Pujols straight up…

we’d probably take it if they just agreed to pay Pujols’ salary.

Naw, Lugo's too much of a clubhouse leader.
We need to make sure he doesn’t spawn more leaders for the Cardinals – ergo, take Rasmus.

Cardinals
They’d have to thrown in Jason LaRue for the deal to be viable.

It’s worth too much.
