Top opening day payrolls
Here are the top payrolls, according to Cot's Baseball Contracts. These numbers include bonuses and money owed former players.
NY Yankees - $206,811,689
NY Mets - $139,102,235
Chicago Cubs - $137,945,612
Detroit Tigers - $129,598,000
Philadelphia Phillies - $128,307,380
Boston Red Sox - $122,624,689
LA Angels - $113,709,000
LA Dodgers - $109,175,853
Houston Astros -$105,035,000
Seattle Mariners - $99,596,926
Chicago White Sox - $98,418,500
Atlanta Braves - $97,692,834
St. Louis Cardinals - $93,612,500
13 MLB teams have payrolls of $90 million or more. That's almost half the teams in both leagues.
Looking at that list, I don't think anyone can really say that the Sox and Yankees are both "Evil Empires." The Sox are 6th in total payroll, and are closer in terms of salary to the Rays than they are to the MFY. Tampa Bay raised their payroll from $43,745,597 on Opening Day last year to $64,876,368. The MFY are $67.5 million ahead of the 2nd highest payroll (the Mets).

Countdown to bankruptcy for the MFY, Inc:

October 5.
Day after their last regular season game, when I suspect the reality of having blown $200 million + the costs of the new stadium will settle in, along with the last bandwagoners jumping off.

Remember the luxury tax too.
I’m not sure the exact amount, but from what I’ve read the MFY are the only team over the luxury tax, meaning their payroll plus tax is around $240-$250. Anyone who claims the Sox are the same as the Yanks is just plain dumb.

Add at least $18M to the Yankees' payroll this year
Because the tax rate should be at least 40% of the total over $162M (in this case, $44.8M).

The difference between the Yankees and the Rays is more than the Rays
Do you think the Steinbrenners would trade their team straight-up for the Rays and their farm system? I’m not sure if this qualifies as irony, but I love it.

The difference between the MFY and Mets (the #2 payroll)
Is larger than the Rays’ entire payroll. In terms of overpaying for talent, the MFY are in a class by themselves.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Can money buy you happiness?
When I initially look at these payment numbers, my first reaction is that MLB should prevent such excessive payments by a certain club or clubs. Indeed if the Yankees ALWAYS won, I would stick with this initial reaction. However, the truth is that baseball is a team game, and buying expensive prima donas does not seem to ALWAYS get you a good team. Also, there is a certain glee I get/feel when the Yankees spend all this money and still lose. Maybe money cannot always buy you happness!

Maybe?
NG, you really need to learn to appreciate the world.

I think
He meant: “money cannot always buy you happiness (unless you spend it to replace Varitek and Wakefield).” Hence the “maybe.”

Well
certainly I agree with you on this concerning Wakefield. Varitek may be a bit of an enigma this year in that he could bounce back a bit (doubtful IMO) but just this one year. After that, his age will continue his decline. Wakefield will prove to be a giant embarrassment THIS YEAR and will have to be pulled out of the rotation.

I love how the instant Tek shows signs of rebounding, everyone jumps back on his bandwagon.
Even though I supported Tek all offseason, one game does not mean a comeback. Let him continue before we let him off easy.
I also have been supporting Wake, so I’d love to see him prove me right too. But for the money we’re paying them, a busted season wouldn’t be horrible in terms of payroll.
