Offensive Review (1-3)

Not to overreact or anything, but our offense isn't looking the best. Are there options to fix some of our ailing bats?

Ells: .220/.273/.220   OPS+: 25

  • He should not be leading off
  • He is starting to warm up and steal some bases.
  • Best fix: Move down in lineup (won't happen unless Tito has an epiphany)

DP: .233/.298/.372   OPS+: 66

  • Slow start [Note: Pointed out it comments that he's always started out slow]
  • WBC exhaustion possibly? He did get injured during it, but it wasn't anything major supposedly
  • Hopefully, he has found a groove after last night's (4/17/09 vs. O's) game
  • Best fix: Get's better as the season progresses

Papi: .158/.261/.184   OPS+: 14

  • I really hope he's just having a horrible first few weeks and isn't injured or finished
  • The combination of the Sox having played so many LHP, the shift that everyone uses against him, and the WBC might be to blame.
  • Best fix: Wait 'til the end of April. If he's still not right, he may need some time on the DL or (I hope this is not the case) we might need to acquire a bat to replace him - Miggy Cabrera of Detroit and Adam Dunn of Washington look like possibilites.

Note: If y'all like these I can continue down the order and into the bench. Might also do a post regarding what it would take to acquire help in some player's cases.

Ellsbury can’t be allowed to continue batting leadoff. The only thing he has going for him is the ability to put the ball in play of late, and if that results in an out, then it’s completely useless leading off with nobody to even move over. Better to bat him 9th until he get’s it going better, if he ever does. He had an encouraging swing last night though. But until he learns some discipline at the plate he can’t be batting in the spot reserved for people who get on base.

Pedroia is just doing what he always does in April, though I’m still not entirely convinced he’s going to be a 20 HR guy like he was last year. In such a case, I think it’d be a good idea to move him up to the leadoff spot, especially given his tendency to be a doubles machine and to have long ABs fouling off a bunch of pitches.

Ortiz is a huge hole sitting at the 3 spot. Better to move him down to 7th or so (I’d suggest moving Ellsbury down, Nick Green up). One would hope that he’d bounce back, but at this point it’s seriously looking like there’s only an outside possibility for that.

Thanks for the response.

Hadn’t thought of moving DP up to leadoff, because he swings for the fences too often. If he adjusts his mentality, he’d be great.
I’d also forgotten about DP being historically a slow starter.

Ellsbury has been making really good contact lately, a lot of his line drives just seem to be finding gloves, I’d wait at least another week before moving him down.

I’m not worried about Pedroia in the least, he’ll bounce back and at least go .300/.360/.450.

Ortiz is the hitter I’m the most concerned about, he simply can’t hit anything, and on the rare occasion he does get a hit it’s only a single. I don’t know what to do about him, but I don’t think we can continue to have him in this lineup. Trade wise, I don’t really know; there is no way Detroit parts with Miguel Cabrera, Adam Dunn just signed a contract this January so he has a no-trade until July. The only elite hitter I can think of that could be available soon would be Holliday, but has he shown he’s worth the prospects + 8yr/160mil extension. Even if we did get him I don’t know where we would play him because I can’t imagine Ortiz on the bench.

Thank god for Youk, Drew, and Bay, because without them this season would be 2-9 not 5-6.

I think Dunn could be had in mid to late May.

Esp. if the Nats aren’t anywhere close to .500, let alone contending. Miggy would be a player that we’d have to sell the barn for, and it would be an extreme over reaction on the FO’s part, now that I give it some more thought.

An idea that popped up in my head while watching SportsCenter last night: Carlos Quentin.

I was all sad for the first few lines.

This is an epic rec.

Plus, I promised to keep my comments on the subject of baseball. If I started writing about Chavez, that Commish Bush thread would look more baseball relevant than a standard GT.

Ellsbury has been looking better of late. The swing seems to be more contact-oriented of late, and with less of the uppercut look. He just needs to get the plate discipline down. But he’s had some very encouraging swings that he wasn’t having through the first 6-8 games.

I can’t imagine Miguel Cabrera is really in play unless we trade 6/10 of our best prospects. I’m guessing the minimum price would involve Buchholz, Bowden, and Anderson. Adam Dunn isn’t a bad idea given the short contract and the fact that he does bring that power to the lineup. I think he’d also fill the 3-spot well because of his on-base abilities and ever-present power threat. He’s just never gonna be the go-to guy in an organization to drive runs in. He’ll set the table for other people, keep the out count at 1 or 2, and allow a guy like Youk to come up and knock him in.

For now, though, I think we should give Bailey a shot at least at platooning. No offense to Chris Carter, but he’s yet to really prove his ability in the Majors at all, and I think Bailey has at least a little. He’s never gonna be a starter on a team like the Red Sox, but given how he’s stuck with our minor league teams and acted as a leader down there while being so constantly blocked from moving up despite great minor league numbers makes me think we owe it to him, and that he’ll do his best for us if we give him the shot.

But what do you with Papi?

Taking on Dunn only works if you move Ortiz. I don’t think that really can happen, unless somebody else thinks he’s worth the price. I wouldn’t trade Bay for Dunn, and that means we have two DHs unless you find somewhere else to stick Dunn, or successfully shop Ortiz.

Hadn't considered that either.

That makes the Bailey idea look even better, if he still has options. If Papi fixes himself, then we can demote Bailey – unless Rocco’s injury keeps him out. Then we can keep Bailey as our 5th OF.

Is Rocco on the DL?

We need a back-up CF, and I don’t think Drew is it. When does Kotsay get off the DL?

Manny ain't the only bad man.

Ells did much better today.

I’m hoping the baseball gods are trying to spite me and are helping Ells out.

I didn’t even think of Bailey – great suggestion. That seems like it would be a good idea, unless he’s out of options.

Bailey has cleared waivers before and seems likely to do it again whether by personal choice or just inactivity by other teams. He’s on his way now though. Hopefully he’ll see ABs before Carter.

Papi is on the books till 2010

With a club option for 2011. Making 12.5 million annually + incentives. Either eat a chunk of his contract and trade him away with some more players (Sorta like some deal that occured last year at the deadline that involved us. I forgot who we traded though?) or live with it.

Its something we just have to hope improves. Unless the Front Office decides they want to give up alot of prospects to get a guy like Dunn, we are going to be looking at Ortiz for the next 2 (maybe 3) years.

They can always sign a free agent slugger in the off-season, but they are all old and expensive. Names such as Matt Holiday, Miguel Tejada, and most eye-catching, Vladimir Guerrero. Names such as Magglio Ordonez, Jermaine Dye, and Victor Martinez can also be had if their club declines their options (Except for Dye, who holds a mutual option).

As I said before, we have to hope for the best with Papi. I really think that wrist injury has made him regress an awful lot, but not to the point where I am ready to toss his name in the garbage and say he is washed up. Just put him at 6 or 7 in the batting order and hope its a big enough blow to his pride of being a power hitter and one of the only true DH’s to ever play the game. It’ll be a reality check that he has to put in more work off the field to correct his woes.

The greatest thing about this though is that when 2011 hits, the club can decline his (Ortiz) option and bring up Lars (Who should be fully ready by then). That’ll free up a chunk of cash and allow us to go after a big name free agent such as, oh.. I don’t know.. Joe Mauer? It would only make sense since Tek will be a FA after the 2010 season.

As far as the other two are concerned (Ells + Peds), I am not worried about either. Ells has been doing better lately and I hope to see his swing continue to improve. And Pedroia, the fact that anyone is worried about him is stupid to me.

Sorry if that looks like a big jumble of words or thoughts to anyone.

by Charged on Apr 20, 2009 12:55 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Lars should be up by late this season or early next season.

All of the Papi concerns are extremely big “what-ifs,” but we just want to have all the options on the table.

Both Ells and Pedroia looked great today (Pat’s Day), and Papi looked pretty good too. Tek looked awesome as well.

by bs.uf15bosox9bears23 on Apr 20, 2009 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn’t rely on Lars to be ready by the end of 2009—at least not for a major role. He’s still in AA right now and has shown some susceptibility to mental slumps like Buchholz. The Sox will probably play it safe with him being as big a prospect as he is. 2011 should be an easy goal to reach for starter-material, though.

Ellsbury really seems to’ve found the swing again. Pedroia too. I’m still skeptical about Papi, who seems to be getting a fair bit of help from the defense. Pedroia and Ells weren’t immune from said help, but did drop in some nice line-drive singles that will ALWAYS fall.

by USG on Apr 20, 2009 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hopefully we won't need Lars.

But he’ll definitely be up when the rosters expand. I think we would go with Carter or Bailey first for any short term need.

We're stuck with Ortiz

We just have to hope he turns it around, because we’re not going to be able to trade him, and there aren’t many $12.5 million bench players.

by Gnick on Apr 20, 2009 6:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It's sad that we look at players in terms of how much we owe them.

We also owe Lugo $9mil, but if both he and Lowrie were healthy, Lowrie would get the start. Performance matters more, and it’s not like we are struggling to pay the salaries.

Fortunately, it appears that he might have fixed his problem – he’s waiting to long to get into swinging position. [Source – thanks to SoxDevil for posting that today]
