Dice-K on 15-day DL
The Sox placed Dice-K on the 15-day DL and called up Hunter Jones, a lefty reliever, from Pawtucket. I think it's hard to argue that the WBC isn't responsible for Matsuzaka's "arm fatigue," which is what the Sox are calling Dice-K's injury.
I'm not sure who will replace Matsuzaka in the rotation. Clay Buchholz, the most likely replacement, has a hamstring injury. It may be Masterson or Bowden. I'm not sure The Sox calling up Jones signals that Masterson will get the spot. Jones is on his way to Oakland, and Boston needs a reliever after last night's game.

His performance last night aside...
… wouldn’t the Sox have to build Masterson’s pitch-count to the point where he could start? Assuming this is a short-term fix, I think that makes Masterson less than an idea candidate.
Bowden, probably.

They were preparing him as a starter for a while in ST.
He may be ready to start now. He’d have to break himself in with 5-inning outings, but he is my pick for the rotation in Dice-K’s absence. Did you see his performance in relief the day Dice-k left after 1 IP?
4 IP, 2 H, 0 BB, 0 ER, 6 K. He was amazing, and the bullpen did a great job in allowing only 1 run in almost 11 innings.

Great move here
Dice is tired.
Well, I'll appreciate for you to keep my zingers outta your mouth!

Blaming Bud Selig?
C’mon, there’re plenty of bad baseball commissioners right now who have made the WBC their own personal crusade.
Oh wait. Just one. F. Bud Selig.

I should know this, but...
…couldn’t teams prohibit players from appearing in the WBC?

I am sure they can
But because the MLB sponsors the WBC, they would probably intervene and allow the player/players to play in the Classic.

Just thought of something else
Won’t we need to add two pitcher to the rotation next week? Dice-K is injured and Beckett’s next start has been pushed back due to his suspension.
Or is the plan to slot Beckett into Dice-K’s spot and start one of Masterson, Bowden, Buccholz in Beckett’s place?

IDK.
That’d make sense though. Would it mess up the rotation later on though?

Beckett is appealing.
He won’t miss a start until it’s arbitrated or until he drops it.

DD
Joe Saunders had arm fatigue was that the fault of the WBC as well?
Arm fatigue is normal in April.
But good news for you DD, you will get your dream and have inexperience prospects take a veteran’s spot in the rotation….

"Inexperienced prospects"
Everyone has got to start somewhere. This is how they’ll get experience.

You miss the point
Dice-K threw way too many pitches way too early in the Spring. That is the fault of the WBC, and the Sox were concerned about it. After he returned comments were made both about the work load and his wild side session. The fact of the matter is the Sox would like to ban players from participating, but it is not prohibited Matsuzaka’s contract and the Sox do not want bad pr in Japan where they have worked hard to build a pipeline. You can be sure that next time, if Dice K is still with the Sox, he will not be participating in this BS exhibition.
Saunders did not miss time at all, as far as I know. The arm fatigue issue he complained about this Spring was possibly a ruse to NOT participate in the WBC. You can sure as hell bet that Dice K is being shut down for a real reason. Unless you want to consider some on this site such as DD or myself to be prophetic genuses (ha), then just accept that it was obvious that it was a very, very bad idea when he was throwing 80-100 pitches at that level in mid March. We (and others) complained about it, and some, like you poo-pooed it. Well, there it is.
No one wants “inexperienced” prospects pitching. We all want quality starts, from whomever will provide them. Dice wasn’t doing it. I hope someone (Masterson, Bowden or Buchholz) steps up and gets the job done.

I LIKE the WBC
But the timing is absolutely horrible. MLB needs to do more to accommodate the WBC. Either run the classic after the MLB season, lengthen the all-star break, or shorten the regular baseball season. Really, only the latter will account for the additional arm strain the pitchers take on, but it’ll really eff with statistical reference.

Turning Point
I am quite scared at the prospect of Masterson stepping up as a starter. I think he has served the club exceptionally well where he is right now and without him our bullpen looks a bit rocky. The funny thing is that what was special to me about the sox the past few years was their clutch ability in every situation. I am very concerned about this since the start of this season. Fingers crossed.
