"Youkilis and Pedroia, I’d give anything to be with those guys in the clubhouse on the Red Sox team, because you can see they come prepared to win. They want to beat your butt. That’s what we need now, and what we needed in ’06." - Team USA Hitting Coach Reggie Smith

USA stays tight-knit -- even Yanks, BoSox - MLB - Yahoo! Sports

Yes, yes, I like these quotes a lot. There's two, but they're awesome.

Pedroia and Youkilis

are showing more and more people why the Red Sox are winners. These two are the heart-and-soul of the Sox and are proving to be the same with Team USA. Youk, in particular, looks awesome. I mean the man plays an impeccable first base, can play a good third and the outfield. He grinds out at bats, hits for average, hits for power, hits in the clutch – what more can you ask?

So the most obvious value of the WBC...

…is to show premier free agents why they really want to play for the Sox.

Yup!

But that’s only if the Red Sox want to sign those free agents, and it doesn’t look like Theo & Co. will want to from now on…

If Team USA wins it

It’ll be because A-Rod isn’t on the team this time. :-)

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Youk

is just mashing in the WBC. Each time the US plays after in the interviews all the non-playoff players are talking about how great the atmosphere for the games are and how they have never played in this type of game.

Maybe we can convert Chris Iannetta or Oswalt to become a Red Sox.

Youk and Pedroia are great ambassadors for the Red Sox.

Youks bomb

In last nights game was awesome. Just classic Youk, grind out the at bat until he gets the ball he can crush over the wall. The Youk Dunn FTW.

Doesn't Dunn hit the FA market again after 2010?

That’d be a good time to reassess our DH situation…

Manny ain't the only bad man.

I can't see the image

Lowell & Ortiz are signed through 2010, and Ortiz has an option for 2011. I think the Sox will exercise the option, but after that these two may no longer be wearing Red Sox uniforms. I could see us going into 2011 with Youk at 3B and Lars at 1B. If we don’t think Ortiz can get it done, we’ll probably move on and sign Dunn to DH. If Ortiz still looks good (I hope so) we’ll exercise the option and maybe extend him for another year beyond that.

In the end, the longest I can see Ortiz with the Red Sox is through 2012. After that, he’ll probably be getting too old, and the Red Sox will have to say ‘so long Papi, thanks for the memories.’ (*tear*)

I agree with you re: Lowell (unless he wants to become a bench player — he would be a great backup 3B/1B), but I think the jury’s out on Big Papi. You’re most likely correct (through 2011), but we’ll see.
