None of the developments, revealed by manager Terry Francona, are surprising. The Red Sox will open the season with a top four of Josh Beckett, Jon Lester, Daisuke Matsuzaka, and Tim Wakefield. Masterson, who will throw two innings out of the bullpen Tuesday, will be a reliever this season.
Beckett will pitch the 2009 regular season opener versus the Rays on Monday, April 6 at Fenway Park. Lester will take the hill for the Red Sox on Wednesday, April 8 followed by Matsuzaka on April 9.

Wakefield
As you probably already know, I have an extremely strong feeling, almost a premonition which is based on Wakefield’s performances toward the end of last year, that he will be very ineffective, even embarrassingly ineffective. Hopefully there is a contingency plan to deal with that slot if I am at all correct.

Inconsistent, not entirely ineffective
His last five starts of the regular season did not show that he is completely gone. In two of them he went a total of 13 innings, and gave up no runs and a total of just five hits. One was average (four runs), and then there were the two disasters. This suggests that the Sox need to watch the number of innings he pitches, not that he’s washed up.

We've given up trying to reason with NG.
Just let him be crazy and lose our bet.
