Race for the "Kotsay spot" down to two?
As spring training winds down, the only question right now seems to be who will win the "Kotsay spot" on the roster.
Although there are allegedly three candidates still in the running--Wilkerson, Carter, and Bailey--it seems less and less likely with every passing day that Wilkerson will actually win the job, opening up the (admittedly temporary) spot for one of our AAAA players.
If Wilkerson were under serious consideration for the bench spot, we'd expect him to be playing in as many games as Carter and Bailey. However, in the last ten days or so, most of the playing time has gone to Carter and Bailey; Wilkerson has played just two games in the last week. So, you can probably scratch him off the list of contenders.
Carter's offense has been solid and his outfield performance has been acceptable, but there have been flashes of first base fielding incompetence (running into MDC during the game with the MFYs, for instance). Surprisingly, though, Carter only has one fielding error (committed on the aforementioned play). Bailey has been less impressive offensively, with not as much power as Carter, but has handled the IF duties more smoothly.
Ultimately, though, I suspect that Bailey is slightly "ahead" in the race, since whoever will fill in for Kotsay will need to have the ability to field first base, particularly with Lugo out. Right now, that appears to be Jeff Bailey, not Chris Carter. Options don't appear to be an issue, so it will be whichever player the team feels will help them best that will get the job.

I'll ay Bailey.
Carter has the better bat, but Bailey can provide adequate to slightly-sub-adequate defense at a couple positions, and by all accounts Carter is atrocious.
Manny ain't the only bad man.
Didn't Bailey catch at some point?
He’d probably have to relearn the position at this point, but call that a tiebreaker.
This was discussed the other day
He’s got a psychological disorder that keeps him from throwing the ball back to the pitcher. Sort of Chuck Knoblauch-ish, but worse.
Manny ain't the only bad man.
Right, that's where I heard it!
Still, if you’re that messed up in the head, you’re not going to last long in any professional sport anyway.
I can think of two ways
1) You’re throwing with the wrong hand. That’s simple to fix, but if you’re any good, you should still be able to throw the ball 60 feet accurately with either hand.
2) Your shoulder is so badly mangled that you can barely lift the ball, let alone throw it. Either way, you’re not going to make the roster.
Yeah, I got that
A player with a mental block about something so simple isn’t going to be a player for very much longer. If he can’t throw the ball 60 feet because of a mental block, it’s only a matter of time before he can’t hit the ball, catch the ball, or set foot on artificial turf without tripping because of a mental block.
If it was a physical problem, it may or may not be fixable. With a mental block like this, though, you either fix it or you lose your roster spot.
Not necessarily.
He came down with the uh affliction like four years ago, and he has still managed to do well in the other facets of his game.
Manny ain't the only bad man.
Not really
He’s still nothing more than a AAAA player. And if he can’t throw the ball 60 feet, there’s no way he’ll ever be more than that.
Oh I'm not saying he's more than that.
He’s the quintessential AAAA/26th player. But he can hit pretty well and play a couple positions, so he’s a useful guy to have around.
I don’t think the throwing thing effects him at 1B or in the OF – similar to how Ankiel and Knoblauch don’t have throwing issues in OF (though Knoblauch didn’t hit enough to actually be a LF).
Manny ain't the only bad man.
His problem was only throwing to the mound
He had no problem throwing to other bases, or from other positions in the field. The only issue was throwing back to the mound.
The main problem is that he switched positions before he could figure out if he could work out the mental block. (He was seeing the team psychologist about the problem when he switched from C to OF.)
Confirmation
Per Francona, Wilkerson probably won’t make the Opening Day roster:
