For me, tonight is opening night 2009!
I have not seen the Sox team play since last October. I did see Diasuke and Youk play in the World Baseball Classic, and I had a potential chance to see the Sox play against the Orioles in Ft. Lauderdale a few weeks ago but opted to play golf instead. I do not live in New England so I do not get NESN, and the only spring season game that Comcast had on the MBL network was rained out a few days ago. I do get the In demand baseball package, but that does not broadcast games until the season starts. Therefore, the MLB network's broadcast of the Sox Yankee game tonight is the opening night equivalent for me for this year's season. I am looking forward to watching the game despite the Obama news conference taking a bit of my concentration away for part of the game.
Now I know it is still spring training season, but I hope the sox take this game seriously and try to win all out. If they do, I will be excited for the upcoming real season and will give credence to all the good things I have read here lately! However if they don't do well, then there are 2 potential scenarios for me (see poll). One is to just understand that it is the spring seasons, and to hope for better results the next game. The other is to expect the worst for the year, and to maybe cancel my In-demand contract and save $170.00.

It's spring training.
It means nothing. I would cancel the contract just because you can get the games in other ways, but not because I don’t want to watch my team. If we lose 100 games this season, I’ll still be sporting a Sox tee every few days.

No offense to Wake, but...
I don’t expect to even see him in the rotation come mid-late season. Penny/Smoltz should take his starts away for the most part.
Now if it were Beckett or Lester vs. C.C.? It might be different…although it really would still mean nothing.
And even if they lose the first 30 games this year you should still be tuning in…

Huh?
Penny/Smoltz would take Byrd’s spot from the end of last season, not Wakefield’s. You’d need at least two of Buchholz, Penny, and Smoltz in the rotation to start taking away Wake’s starts. (Right now, though, I expect Penny and Smoltz to fill up one spot on the roster, with Buchholz filling in with spot starts.)

Agreed
That’s the likely scenario. Buchholz will likely go to Pawtucket and be called up if there is a need. Penny, Smoltz, and Wake will vie for the two spots at back end of the rotation. If Wakefield is as effective as he has been in the past, he’ll be a lock for one spot, especially since Smoltz and Penny are 1-year rentals and Wake’s contract situation is year-to-year.
No team goes an entire season with just 5 starters. The Sox have 7 (8, if you count Bowden). In my opinion, that’s the minimum to have the proper depth over 162 games.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

True, but . . .
The teams that tend to get the most mileage out of their regular starters stand a very good chance of making it to the postseason.
(And it’s probably reasonable to expect Bowden to get a handful of starts, too.)
