Red Sox invite 19 to camp

And the list is in courtesy of Ian Browne of RedSox.com:

Fans will get their first look at first baseman Lars Anderson, viewed to be the best hitter in the farm system, and flame-throwing reliever Daniel Bard.

However, the non-roster group has 13 players who have Major League experience, including left-hander Billy Traber, infielder Nick Green and outfielder Paul McAnulty.

Also invited to camp are pitchers Fernando Cabrera, Enrique Gonzalez, Kris Johnson, Marcus McBeth, Dustin Richardson, Traber and knuckleballer Charlie Zink. For infielders, Jeff Bailey, Angel Chavez, Green, Ivan Ochoa and Gil Velazquez will be in attendance. For outfielders, Chip Ambres, Zach Daeges, McAnulty, Josh Reddick and newly signed Brad Wilkerson. The only non-roster invitee that is a catcher is Carlos Maldonado.

The group I am curious to watch are the prospects: Anderson, Bard, Johnson, Richardson and Reddick. It'll be interesting to see how Zink pitches as well. Although I don't think we'll see a lot of the prospects (they'll probably be reassigned a few weeks in), spring training will still be a decent test for some of them.

I like flame throwers,

especially those that can also control their flame direction. I do not like knucleballers, and would just as well let ALL of them go elsewhere!

Link broken?

Any reason the linked article is about a little league team—or is that Randy’s idea of an in-joke?

Oops. My B :-D

What, you didn’t want to read about the greatness that is Portsmouth Little League? You caught me. I was just trying to pimp my hopeful-to-be real job of sports reporting…

So...

with Kotsay out for the beginning of the year, who’ll start the season with the team instead of him?

I'm kinda hoping for Bailey or Carter.

Better bats. As long as we think that Baldelli can play, I see no reason to worry about keeping Wilkerson. Anyone realize that Wilkerson was worth 1.1 wins below replacement level last year? Horrid.

totally off topic

but I just watched Neil Diamond singing “Sweet Caroline” at the Grammy’s. Badass.

I'd never heard the Jonas Brothers before.

Stevie rulz, but the Jonas kids just seemed hopped up on Red Bull. They were better than I imagined, but the bar was set pretty low.

Radiohead with the USC marching band was definitely my favorite.

Radiohead beating Beck is a cultural mistake

It’s everywhere, really.

Plus, the Grammy sucks. I mean, Viva La Vida winning the best song? WTF? That song is basically Satriani’s If I Could Fly with a Ricky Martin title.

Yep.

No love for the garage bands either. And they had a pregnant chick dancing around in a bikini while Kanye “Mullet” West, TI, JayZ, and Lil Wayne blasted hip hop throughout the theater. And Mullet gave the British redhead a dirty look when he handed her an award. Very suckish award ceremony, and it lasted way to long on a Sunday night.

I love Beck.

Saw him in NYC in the Fall, I’ve seen him 6 or 7 times since 1996. His most recent album is my favorite of his since Mutations.

Love Radiohead too. Seen them three times. OK Computer = genius.

Did Radiohead beat Beck for something?

I was surprised that I enjoyed the Grammys. I usually hate awards shows. I recorded it knowing Radiohead, McCartney and Plant/Krauss were playing, started it two hours late and fast forwarded through all the crap.

Though I’ve got to admit, I wanted to like the Plant/Krauss stuff (I love Zeppeling and am a semi-pro bluegrass musician), but I just didn’t.

Beck is amazing

Back in the days, I liked Mellow Gold when it came out, and then he released Odelay. I ran like a girl to the store and got it. First time I listened it, I couldn’t believe I was actually listening that, I felt like I was hallucinating. Needless to say, I’ve been a big fan of his ever since, and saw him live 5 times.

Radiohead album beat Modern Guilt as best rock album, or something like that. I like Radiohead as well, but I stopped caring when they thought they could sound like Aphex Twin with guitars. OK Computer is genius indeed, and Street Spirit (Fade Out) is a top 10 song of the 90’s.

I tried to like it as well, but couldn’t. Do you know JPJ’s Zooma? I think it’s the best of the post-Zep work by any member of the band.

And what do you play? I like bluegrass, but I don’t know much stuff (I looked for that stuff in my Grateful Dead days).

I've gotten into bluegrass the last few years.

That’s what happens when you move to Wtoming. Big fan. There’s a lot of kinda alt-bluegrass thats pretty awesome. Listen to some Old Crow Medicine Show. Song called Wagon Wheel is like the anthem of this town.

Also love Beck. Lost Cause is in my full rotation right now.

OCMS

I picked with those guys at a bluegrass festival a few years ago, when Dave Rawlins (Gillian Welch’s guitar player) was playing banjo with them. Really cool guys. if you don’t know Gillian Welch, I highly recommend her – she writes songs that sound like they’re from the 30s. In a good way. “Time the Revelator” is a good album to start with.

I don’t know Zooma, but I met JPJ at another bluegrass festival (Merlefest) a few years back. I was watching a band at a small side stage, heard an accent that I thought seemed out of place in North Carolina, looked over and I was sitting next to John Paul Jones! i immediately shook his hand, waited til after the show and then blubbered for a couple of minutes. really chill guy, and apparently he’s a pretty good mandolin player (battle of evermore…)

as for what i play, mostly guitar and i’m learning mandolin. i’m not so much into “jamgrass” – i love the old school hard-driving stuff, like the stanley brothers.

i’m actually headed to an indoor bluegrass festival at a hotel in framingham this weekend. 72 hours of picking and grinning (and drinking) – i can’t wait. best part of winter.

Cool

I play guitar and drums. If we ever meet, we should jam. You know, in a heterossexual way. :)

Wow, that's terrific

One of the best covers I heard lately, hands down. I’ll look more stuff.

Is it just me, or this music has a touch of gospel music? I mean, in the good way.

I’m of the opinion that 98% of good music is either about God or women.

I would agree

But then again most of the Funkadelic-Parliament catalog isn’t about either.

Gilliam Welch is awesome too.

You heard of a guy named Jalan Crossland? not sure how big he is nationally in the bluegrass scene, but he plays more old-school-ish and was the Wyoming pick champion. More importantly hes also fucking hilarious, sings about being white trash and stuff. Listen the lyrics of this one. Sample: “Aunt Flo don’t where no bra/ just lay around the house watching Oprah/ Shootin’ pergasets with Rc Cola/ and leaving her toenails in the couch.”

on and off this year.

probably will hit our average, but there’s been a decent amount of warming cycles that have hurt us. Huge avalanche hazard too. Someone got killed in a slide inbounds at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort this season.

by BTLove on Feb 9, 2009 11:35 PM EST up reply actions

I heard that.

I’ve never been to Jackson Hole, but I’ve done some winter backcountry in the Tetons. Gorgeous.

by tommy.otm on Feb 10, 2009 12:01 AM EST up reply actions

Where you been in the Tetons?

I’ve ski as much as I can in the back country; the Tetons are some of the sickest mountains in the country.

by BTLove on Feb 10, 2009 3:40 AM EST up reply actions

To tell you the truth, I have no idea.

I did a two-week backcountry skiing NOLS course in December of 1996. I could dig up an old journal and find the specific names – maybe – but I have no specific memory.

What about that Utah snow!

“The best snow on Earth”

by DirtySouthSox on Feb 11, 2009 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

Utah's good.

But nothing compares to the Tetons. Snow might not be as good all the time, but the terrain makes Utah look like Wachusett.

by BTLove on Feb 11, 2009 6:17 PM EST up reply actions

British Columbia is pretty badass.

Whistler in particular. It’s hard for me to compare to the Tetons, because I was learning to tele on relatively short hills, where n Whistler I had miles of vertical drop. But it did snow steadily for 12 of the 14 days I was on NOLS.

Manny ain't the only bad man.

by tommy.otm on Feb 11, 2009 6:43 PM EST up reply actions

Whistler is good,

but Jackson has sustained expert terrain for thousands of feet and better snow. Also, town doesn’t look like fucking Disney World.

by BTLove on Feb 11, 2009 6:48 PM EST up reply actions

I was 19 when I went to Whistler.

I know people that have done that trip.

It sounds pretty hardcore. Like you gotta stick your feet in your buddies armpits to try to warm them up.

by BTLove on Feb 11, 2009 6:16 PM EST up reply actions

Seriously

The best part was building igloos and using them as base camps. I was in the best shape of my life at the time. Then I moved to Tahoe and immediately hurt my shoulder in a drinking accident (literally, my first night) and have never looked back.

Manny ain't the only bad man.

by tommy.otm on Feb 11, 2009 6:41 PM EST up reply actions

That sux.

This time of year half of the town is walking around on crutches. Getting hurt is the worst, especially in a drinking accident.

Seriously.

Jack Daniels + handstands on a chair = doh.
