Report: Red Sox After Jason Bay, But Not Matt Holliday

According to FanHouse's Ed Price, the Red Sox will be going after Jason Bay, but not his left field counterpart Matt Holliday:

#RedSox have told people if they don't get Jason Bay they will not spend on Matt Holliday. And word is #Mariners pushing on Bay

The offseason has just become very interesting if this is true. If the Red Sox don't get Bay or Holliday, who is the answer? Jeremy Hermida maybe? Maybe a trade? Maybe Mike Cameron in center field and Jacoby Ellsbury in left?

Boy, I sure do love the hot stove.

I have a feeling this story will change 50 times this week depending on who you hear it from

I don't get this

Let’s not bother to try and get the best player available?

Personal opinion

I think that Theo & Co. think that he’s going to either a) not be able to play in the pressure zone of Boston or b) be a horrible teammate/have a negative effect on the clubhouse.

I think those are the two big things against Holliday.

RE:

Playing in Boston and the ability to do so is something Theo & Co. factor in. It’s not a HUGE factor, but it plays a role. Maybe, specifically, with Holliday, it is a factor. Only Theo knows.

I’ve heard before, in passing, that Holliday isn’t a great clubhouse guy. The only guys that truly know are his teammates, though.

Maybe I’m wrong, but that’s just my gut feeling.

Agreed

I have heard the clubhouse rumors too and I think Theo likes how Bay fit right in immediately.

by drabidea on Dec 8, 2009 4:06 PM EST up reply actions

I still think

That Cameron is the best idea out there. Our outfield defense would be ridiculous, and wouldn’t lose enough runs to really hurt, plus we’d probably be able to bring in Reddick next year.

I also think that this is probably posturing to counter Boras- now that the Yanks probably have no need for him, there’s very few teams left who are interested and can afford him if we’re out. I think we’re probably still in for Holliday.

I would just much rather have the headline be reversed

Go for Holliday, and if that doesn’t work THEN you go for Cameron

Guarantee:

Whichever team signs Holliday, the newspaper in that city (or multiple) will run this headline, depending when the signing goes down:

“Happy (Early) Holliday”

or

“Happy Holliday”

or, less likely

“Happy (Late) Holliday”

Put it in the bank.

Dumb if it's true.

If you’re gonna overpay for one of them, you may as well overpay for the good one that will result in draft considerations coming back your way.

6 years

How do you have any idea if draft pick compensation will be around in 6+ seasons. There are already rumblings that this might be gone soon.

by TroyPatterson on Dec 8, 2009 6:09 PM EST up reply actions

Bay would leave THIS YEAR

We’d be trading a 2nd rounder for a 1st rounder and a supp. pick.

bay to Ms

I’d trade Bay for Beltre and their 09 first round pick Dustin Ackley. Put Youk back at first and beltre at 3rd

Nah

We could make that awesome trade NEXT year after that prospect had one year of professional baseball!

I think it was yesterday Tito cautioned Sox fans to not take any rumors they hear over the hot stove season too seriously. Which I think is nice timing…

Holliday is the guy unless we can get a guy like Adrian Gonz or Miguel Cab.

and then get a 2 year contract on Cameron or Damon short term.

no no no

1. He’s evil and hated and PR IS important for the team
2. please look at his Home vs Away Spilts for 2009- OPS .915 at home and .795 away (with actually a higher BA away)- ALL his power was due to Yankee stadium
3. His defense has looked pretty awful lately- especially his arm, which, with the monster, is probably the one thing it is important for a Fenway LF to have to get the wall balls in.

I don't like your backup plan

Damon is a no, no, no.

I wouldn’t give Cameron 2 years. Maybe 1 year with a decent team option. I realize he’s still playing great and in great shape, but we don’t know how long until Reddick is ready and we don’t want to be stuck with Cameron if he does get hurt… 37 is pretty old for a CF.
