A Decision Made: Kelly to Pitch Full Time in 2010

Gordon Edes, in ESPN's Winter Meetings coverage, reported that Casey Kelly has told Theo Epstein he will pitch full-time in 2010. Certainly a weight off Sox fans' shoulders that Kelly's love for playing shortstop would prevent him from reaching his full potential.

Edes also mentioned that Kelly will get an invite to "big league camp" and pitch in the high-minors, though that would be expected given how close he is to AA as is.

So your real name?

Well USG is still shorter until I get used to whatever you call yourself now.

Kelly

Theo is saying about CK that “He could, if everything breaks his way, force his way on to the Major League radar screen sometime in the next year or 2”
Come on Theo, I know you want to make him feel like he made the right decision but making it to the show in ONE year?
Hey Mr…Buch… Buchanan, I’ll still call you USG, the most awesome editor on this awesome blog.

You're welcome to.

But don’t say that to E. Coli or he’ll satire me to death.

As for Kelly, 1 year isn’t TOO ridiculous. His comment to Edes about “high minors” pitching might suggest he starts the year in AAA after having little difficulty adjusting to A+ competition. I expect it’ll take him longer to make his way through AA, but once he’s in AAA he’s “on the radar”.

He’ll still be behind Taz/Bowden assuming they’re still with the organization/not in the rotation, but still.

Yeah but you know how much this organization is carefull when it comes to promote its top prospects

He has pitched 94 innings last year, so I don’t see him making it to Boston in a 140 IP span: He has to be lights out through 2 (maybe 3 levels).

True

Still, “on the radar” is “on the radar”

An offhand thought, though, is that this might be an unintentional hint that Kelly is on the market. The Sox are lacking major-league ready talent, so this could be Theo trying to suggest Kelly is close.

USG

Maybe

But if he gets to AA and pitches well there, he could see a September call-up and pitch an inning or two in blowouts.

by RSNexile on Dec 7, 2009 6:07 PM EST up reply actions

Funny -- I never hit post

Anyway, to complete the thought, if we assume he reaches AA next year, then a September call-up is the very least we could expect in 2011.

Though Portland has a good shot of seeing playoff action this year.

Exposito
Navarro
Lars
Kalish
Iglesias
Lin

Kelly
Weiland
Fife

Should be a very good team for much of the year both offensively and defensively.

Portland is in for another good year.

I’ll keep my usual watch on Greenvile and I’m praying to see Manifest and perhaps our new #1 draft pick this summer….not so sure about that last one….why does it seem that Pawtucket and Salem are depleted?

Yeah, this "Ben Buchanan" business is gonna take some getting used to.

I was wondering why you had your sig as USG when your name was USG.

Galactus does as he pleases. Because Galactus is drunk.

Yep, now waiting for DD to tell us his true name which is...

Theo Epstein?
