"I’m obviously talking totally hypothetically. Any transaction involving the Red Sox, I think there is a level of comfort. Most of the players over there were drafted by Jason. For a large part of that, I was the assistant GM. Knowing the player’s background, knowing their personality, there’s a comfort level in that, and frankly, I guess, a lack of risk compared to some other transactions where you don’t have the same level of knowledge. Any transaction involving the Red Sox mentally feels more stable because you certainly know the players. Certainly, putting it in the context of Adrian, that’s just speculation, but it is true that we know those players very well."

This is an interesting contrast
to the “well that might make it harder, we know them too well….”. Seems like the Padres were asking for way too much, Theo balked and that’s why we haven’t heard about Adrian for a while. But Jed may be getting pressure from the organization and Gonzo to have him traded to Boston or somewhere like that.
"We're not going to give up," It doesn't happen, so who cares? There's always next year. It's not like it's the end of the world."-Manny Ramirez
This absolutely strikes me as hint dropping.
Hoyer knows he needs to ship Gonzalez. The Padres aren’t going to win, they aren’t going to resign him, and they aren’t going to do any better by letting years slip off his contract ala Roy Halladay.
Hoyer also knows this line will SO get eaten up by the press. He says it’s hypothetical to keep the radical SDP fans in line, but mentions Gonzalez’ name enough to get the Boston press pushing for it. At the same time, he invites Theo to call without calling himself. He can make Theo come to him, which gives him better bargaining.
And finally he reassures Padre fans that any deal they get, they’re gonna get good value. Hoyer and McLeod know the guys they’ll be getting, and they think they’re good.
It’s pretty damn political, if you ask me.

I look at it much differently
Hoyer just got hired, the last thing he wants is the fans screaming that they dumped AGonz at a discount to his old employer. Hoyer’s main priority is keeping his job and a deal with Boston will be much harder and far more delicate to avoid the people saying he sold low to his old buddies.
A-Gon
I think that if the Padres trade A-Gon it will be no sooner than the ASB. That way they can say to the fans, “Hey we tried, but we need new talent”.
