Around SBN: Bracketology 2012: Duke Finally Steps Up To The No. 1 Line

Marco Scutaro's contract is for cheaper than I'd have expected. Turns what was, in my opinion, a good signing into a great signing. Consider that that's how much we were paying "low-risk, high-reward" guys Smoltz and Penny last year, and we've got ourselves a bargain!

Considering the deal...

…I’m softening my stance a bit.

Assuming we don’t move Lowell, we now have 4 people who can play third, this might allow us to move folks around, provide rest around the infield and DH. The flexibility might work out well. We’ll see how it plays out during the season, I guess.

A caveat

Is that Scutaro seems to play best with consistent time at 1 position.

Good point

But I’m trying to be more positive about this signing…quit killin’ my buzz, Homes!

Yeah

I am coming around to it too. After my usual flair up [:)](before even knowing the terms), and after considering the terms of the deal, it makes sense in that he is likely a 2.5 WAR player, thus worth the money and he provides versatility. 2 years is not bad, and if we eventually don’t even lose that pick but a lower one, all the better.

That's an optimistic value

Considering he’s only reached 2.5 WAR or higher twice in his career.

well

he didnt play regularly until recently, and he moved around a lot on the field. Fangraphs (for whatever it is worth) projects him at 2.7 I think for next year as a full time SS and that is without unrealstic #s.

WAR

isn’t that the same stat that says Zobrist was more valuable than Pujols in 2009?

Miguel Cabrera IS the solution to our problems.

Do not pay Jason Bay !!

WAR. What is it good for?

Yeah

I thought of that first.

at least on this site. I’m sure it’s all over the nets. Hard to take credit for.

I'd've been shocked if someone hadn't gotten to it before now.

But it’s all about usage and timing, my friend.

yes

you don’t like? ;). Zobrist plays a much more important position much better than Pujols played his less important position last year, while still having a monster offensive year (but not a Pujols offensive year). Basically they both came out about the same and were among the top 2 in WAR in baseball. However, WAR is more suspect for 1bs and catcher because their fielding is harder to value by the metric (fangraphs) WAR uses so of course take with a grain of salt. Plus, I doubt this will happen again.

Either way, I also doubt you really cared for an explanation.

Nobody thinks WAR is fullproof.

But it’s a damn good measurement when you take into account its relatively few faults. Certainly better than BA or errors.

I posted this Klaw-chat excerpt elsewhere yesterday
Cesare (Jet City, Washington)
According to Fangraphs, Polanco was worth 50 million over the last three years … does anyone seriously think their valuations have any basis in reality?

My favorite line on those came from a GM: "Their replacement level is, like, me."

Heh.
