Scutaro Worked Out for Boston Scout
It's looking more and more like this is going to happen, and if it does, it's going to be an overpay.
Seems like a big reason the Sox hadn't given him a big offer yet is because of the heel injury.

Just think it's worth saying
That honestly, barring a Jed Lowrie resurgence, it seems unlikely that the Sox will realistically end up with a better player at shortstop than Scutaro. Even though we almost certainly will be overpaying a guy following a career year, he’s not actually a bad player as far as I’m concerned.
In fact (assuming he doesn’t have some reason to suspect a significant year-to-year decline in fielding for Scutaro), Bill James’ predictions should put him at right around $11 million in WAR even with a fair decline in offense.
I think we’re all kind of giving Scutaro a bad rap just because of the fact that we do feel there are more cost-effective options. And I’d agree that there are. But if we end up paying him 16-20/2, it’s far from the end of the world, especially since he COULD live up to last year’s performance.
Plus, if we do what many of us want and sign Holliday, the draft pick lost would only be a 2nd rounder.

I am saddened...
…to have to agree with you. Not because of you, but because I’d like more than Scutaro. However, he’s an upgrade over what we had (Green/Gonzo/One-Handed Jed), and is likely better-to-much-better than what’s available. Plus, he can play third and second, so at worst he’s versatile…

Meaning no Bay. So the likely tally would be + 2 first rounders, + 2 sandwich rounders, – 1 first rounder, – 1 second rounder. I don’t want to sign Holliday personally, but that’s a draft upgrade by any measure.

16/2 = about right. 20/2 = overpaying.
Somehow this feels like Lugo 2.0, but for two years we could handle it. Even if it doesn’t work out, there’s still the very small chance that Jed may turn out to be a fine and healthy player
This so fuckin' depressing
We’re spending all this money on a failure after failure at the SS position instead of signing prime time talent in the FA market (Tex or Martin Perez who was an IFA)
Meanwhile, Jed is in Toronto (!!!!) rehabbing.

From a purely personal and subjective standpoint...
…it would have been worth the overpay to deliver the nut-punch to the Yanks, and to not have to listen to all this team of the decade talk.
After all, its not my money…

No
But the money effects how good your team is, and the Sox are on a budget whether we like it or not. Overpaying for Tex means underbidding on FA B, or not signing 9 of our top-10 draft picks (fuck yeah, Younginer!)

Yeah.
I know, I know. I just wanna nut-punch the Yankees and not live in a world where Yankees fans have reasons not to kill themselves. It’s a dream I have…

Or not locking up players to team friendly extensions
As we did with Pedroia, Youk and Lester. Those were the key acquisitions last year.

You want nut punches?
Take the hit this year, beat ’em in three straight ALCS down the line.

Yup.
Tex was never going to come here. I’ve got some inside info (a mutual friend of peanut-butter), and it was NY the whole time.
Manny ain't the only bad man.
ewwwww tell her she's gross
Release Jason Varitek before ST is over !
Do not pay Jason Bay !!
Trade Buchholz !!!
I disagree
We’ve payed 11 millions to get rid of Renteria
We’re paying ~ 15 millions for Lugo
That’s dead money which could be spent else where (like overpaying for Tex).
And yes We’re not skimping in the IFA market.

We didn't get rid of Lugo until after Tex had signed with the Yanks
So what does he have to do with it?

As the days go by...
The more saddened I am by Marco Scutaro.

I agree with the anti-Scutaro comments, but it's funny
that he’s beyond any doubt an upgrade over A-Gonz, Green, or injured Jed. We shouldn’t be upset UNLESS the money spent for him prevents us from a more meaningful signing somewhere else (e.g. LF, 3B/1B, SP). I don’t see that it would.
Hey we have very few options, bring Scutaro Claus to town.
F it

Reports out of Caracas
say Scutaro has indeed signed (report is obviously in Spanish), with terms unknown.

I read that "carcass" at first...
… and thought: “Why the hell would Jason Varitek have inside info on this?”

Scutaro may have worked out for a Boston Scout
But his signing will not work out for Boston.
