Yanks trade melky

Ok so as many of you may have heard the yanks traded for Javier Vazquez.  This trade could mean bigger things.  Just looking at the trade Vazquez is a pretty damn good starting pitcher.  (15-10, 2.87 ERA, 238 ks, 1.03 WHIP). But this could mean more then just another good arm into there rotation. I think everyone believed with the trade for Granderson, Melky would move over to LF.  Well, Melky was involved in this trade meaning theres a spot up for grabs in the yanks LF.  Yes this could mean that Damon could re-sign or they could use Gardner or someone else in the yanks clubhouse.  But that wouldnt be the yankee way. Theres two big (expencive) bats waiting to be signed to LF. And i think theres a possiblity that Holliday will be in those god-awful pinstrips next year.  Which may lead to the Sox sigining Bay out of panic. Your thoughts??

Bay/Holliday

Much too expensive at this point, even for the Yankee’s taste. My initial reaction to this trade was, “Okay, Javier Vasquez….now who plays left field?”. Unless Damon resigns for a discount (doubt it), I have no idea who will be manning LF. Although I think the Yanks got away with a steal of a trade, on paper at least, I doubt Vasquez will put up the same numbers in the AL East…we all remember his first stint. As a Sox fan, this really doesn’t scare me, our rotation still has the advantage and our offense should be decent, if not as good as last year if Ortiz bounces back and we have V-Mart for an entire year. The one thing that amazes me is that the Yanks’ were able to acquire Vasquez and Granderson without giving up one of Hughes/Joba/Montero.

Forgot to mention

The Yanks are paying all of Vasquez’ $11.5MM salary next year. I would hope that would put any talks of Bay/Holiday to rest.

If the MFY should aim for either Bay or Holliday..

they should sign Holliday.

The MFY can afford it, unless they are aiming for the Cliff Lee and Joe Mauer sweepstakes next year..

Doubt it.

They are already paying almost 30M in luxury taxes, add on the 11.5 from Vasquez’ contract and you’re looking at almost 40M added on in a matter of days. Throw in the fact that Jeter and Rivera are FA’s next offseason, I think its more likely that they play Gardner in left or get a sweetheart deal from Damon.

Damon was willing to accept 2 years, 20 million

thats a pay cut, isn’t it.

I think Johnny comes back. Thats probably the most likely scenario.

Different scenario.

There is no way the Yanks’ sign Bay or Holliday to a long-term deal, considering the amount of money tied up between AJ/Tex/CC. Yea, they have deep pockets, but they don’t have an infinite payroll.

right.

exactly what was said after CC/AJ signed a year ago.

Not really

Everyone knew the Yanks were in the Tex Sweepstakes and it was going to come down to who outbid them. The Yanks have met with Bay, but it doesn’t seem like anything but touching all bases, and this was before the Granderson/Vasquez’ trades. Almost every source has the Yanks out of Bay/Holliday unless their asking price goes down significantly, which we know it won’t.

“9:45am: Joel Sherman of the New York Post says (via Twitter) that Bay, Johnny Damon and Matt Holliday remain too expensive for the Yankees”

Which only makes sense…The Yanks want to stay under $200M for the season, either signing is highly unlikely.

BS

Everyone counted them out on Tex the moment they signed AJ/CC and Cashman denied being “in” on him. Everyone though Tex was Boston’s to lose. As long as they have a need they have the money to fill that need with the best available player. How soon you forget.

As long as Bay, Holliday and Damon aren't signed..

The MFY are still in play. If the MFY are having money problems, there would be moves like upping season ticket prices (Which are still obscene, well so are the Sox’s tickets) try to nickel and dime things like concessions, etc, YES subscription rates, etc. etc.

Basically they would be emulating a team with a serious cash crunch problems, like the Dodgers.

I am not writing that the Yankees don’t have a budget, and Drunken Sailors have to sober up between passing out in their own vomit, , but the MFY tend to downplay their interests in players during the off season. Much like for Teixiera, they had a bigger need for him than the Sox and even the Angels at the time, even though they downplayed their interest in him..

The MFY need a LF. As much as Brett Gardner is an okay utility OF, the MFY aren’t going to settle with Gardner 8th or 9th in the order, which will offer less protection for Johnson, if he is put down there in the batting order besides, Cano and Jeter..

If the MFY are worried about saving money when going for Jeter, I mean come on, Baseball is a pretty non sympathetic/ non sympathetic business, but do you think any other team is going to bid for Jeter that is even close to $20 million a year for a 36-37 year old player besides the MFY?!?!? I highly doubt that Jeter would leave New York to play for the Tigers, or the White Sox, the guy is the front man for the franchise..

Rivera, I can see other teams may be interested, as long he has a 95mph cutter, but Rivera isn’t going to break the bank to sign him for the MFY.

I'm sure the Yanks plan on having Damon come back next year

but no one else really wants him and he doesn’t want to be anywhere else, so they’re going to wait it out and see how far down they can get him and the superagent to come.

Not this year

The Yankees are saving their money this year to sign Cliff Lee and/orJosh Beckett next year to replace Andy Pettite and/or Javier Vasquez.

The Yankees have no interest in locking up another potential DH for several years. So no Bay or

The Yankees will either sign Marlon Byrd or Mark DeRosa to take the LF position.
Xavier Nady should not be ruled out either.

by Idawild on Dec 23, 2009 1:01 PM EST reply actions

Byrd blows and DeRosa is overrated and wants 3 years.

Screw that.

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.
