Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

Evaluating the Offseason

The Red Sox, themselves have had a very intriguing off season.

They first, as expected struck a deal with shortstop Marco Scutaro on a 2-year 11 million dollar deal.  Improving the team defensively as well as offensively as Scutaro had a career year batting .282 with 12 homers and 60 RBI's.

Then, it got interesting

They were ultimately expected to re-sign outfielder Jason Bay, or go after the pricey Scott Boras client Matt Holliday.

What do they do? They simply fooled the minds of many as they used that extra money many thought was going to be invested into Holliday or Bay to sign John Lackey, arguably the best Starting Pitcher on the market to a 5-year 82.5 million dollar contract and sign Mike Cameron to a 2-year deal.

The Cameron deal, putting the final dagger in a possible Bay return.

Now GM Theo Epstein has put together a team that some feel are worse off offensively than in 2008.

Bay, 31 had a spectacular stint in Boston as he was acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 3-team blockbuster that sent disgruntled outfielder Manny Ramirez out of Boston.

The Red Sox, since then have never looked back.  Bay, last season hit 36 homers and 119 RBI's, leading the team in both categories.

Bay also took home his first Silver Slugger award last season.

However, he has since moved on and will ultimately sign with the New York Mets, reportedly the only suitor for the 31 year old slugger.

The Red Sox now also have decided to part ways with 2007 World Series MVP Mike Lowell, as he will take a physical with the Rangers this weekend.

Rumors have circulated that the Red Sox are interested in bringing in third baseman Adrian Beltre to take Lowell's place at third.

The Red Sox, themselves are "infatuated" with Beltre as they love his defensive play and ability to swing the bat.  Despite his poor season last year, he exploded for 48 home runs in 2004 with the Dodgers

Epstein, has proven that this offseason is simply about improving the teams defensive play.  Adding Beltre would make since with this mind-set.

Problem is, his contract demands.

Beltre, like slugger Matt Holliday, is represented by Scott Boras, baseball's super agent.

Boras, has come out and said that Beltre's value should entitle him to a 4-year 40 million dollar contract.

The Red Soxare certainly interested, but by signing Beltre to a value like this, would put them over their luxury tax.  Signing Beltre would cause the team to be penalized.

Signing Beltre, at this point seems unrealistic, but is still a possibility if the price is right.

If the Red Sox don't sign Beltre or another third baseman, who would play third base?

Right now, assuming the Lowell trade does go down, it would be Kevin Youkilis.

Youkilis has all ways thought of himself as a third baseman and would be willing to switch positions, with 2009 trade deadline acquired Casey Kotchman filling the void at first.

Certainly, a good move defensively, but iffy move offensively.

The Red Sox could certainly make a move to get a slugger to play first, via trade.

The most popular name talked about: Adrian Gonzalez from the Padres.

Gonzalez, 27 has proven to be one of the most productive hitters over the past few years.  In 2009, Gonzalez batted .277 with 40 home runs and 99 RBI's, playing for a Padres club who finished last in the N.L West,

The Red Sox have been linked to Gonzo dating back to the trade deadline, but San Diego GM Kevin Towers was asking to much for the slugger.  The Sox acquired Catcher Victor Martinez instead.

Now talks have reportedly "have life" as new GM Jed Hoyer, former assistant to Theo Epstein in Boston now can decide whether to give his old club a discount for the slugger who earns only 4.5 million this year and 5.5 in 2011.

Hoyer, has shot down that idea.

But with the signing of John Lackey, this allows young Clay Bucholtz to become more expendable.

The believed package would be that Boston would acquire Gonzalez in exchange for Bucholtz, Casey Kelly, and Ryan Westmorland.  This, the only way Boston can strike a deal without the inclusion of both Bucholtz and Center fielder Jacoby Ellisbury.  With Ellisbury likely to stay.

This could pan out to be quite like the Phillies and Roy Halladay.  Pull out the first time, and come back when the price is lower.

Since Hoyer is close with Epstein, that may very well be possible.

With that said, this is my projected Red Sox lineup....

  1. Jacoby Ellisbury CF
  2. Dustin Pedroia 2B
  3. Victor Martinez C
  4. Adrian Gonzalez 1B
  5. Kevin Youkilis 3B
  6. David Ortiz DH
  7. Mike Cameron LF
  8. J.D Drew RF
  9. Marco Scutaro

Rotation.....

  1. Josh Beckett
  2. Jon Lester
  3. John Lackey
  4. Daisuke Matsuzaka
  5. Tim Wakefield

hey, this is a way better article than most stuff on nesn.

only thing is that last season was 2009, not 2008.

i think a better option than switching youk to third and having kotchman play first is having lowrie play third. if he isn’t healthy, then i have no problem with kotchman. but i believe keeping youk where he’s at his best and getting a healthy lowrie is the best option internally.

also, its amazing how much better that lineup looks with a-gon in it, minus kotchman. it goes from porous to amazing.

agreed

ya i mean Jed is a good option at third and he could provide good range at third. I just think that A-Gon in the lineup would put us over the top. He’s a guy that can give you 40 homers a season. That and he makes like a combined 9 million over the next two years. He also is a gold glove guy at first. Having him would make since and would put us over the top. A-gon in my book is an “upgrade” over J-Bay in my mind. I loved having him here but he doesnt wanna be here so we gotta get someone to replace him. Oh and last year was 2009, my bad not 2008, what was i thinking?

no

the only place he could really be switched where it would make sense is switching him with Cameron, and that ruins the L/R split

Probably best number 8 hitter in baseball, but I think that position for him makes the most sense

Lowell is staying.

It’s just been reported that concerns over his thumb have caused the deal to fall through. Unfortunately for you, this means that your post doesn’t really warrant much discussion anymore. Our lineup will look like this:
Jacoby Ellisbury CF
Dustin Pedroia 2B
Victor Martinez C
Kevin Youkilis 1B
David Ortiz DH
Mike Lowell 3B
J.D. Drew RF
Mike Cameron LF
Marco Scutaro SS

Nice post though. Just go easy on the ‘enter’ button next time ;)

thanks

ya i heard about it to. I hate Lowell is staying. Dont you think they will dispose of him somehow?

by redsoxfan817 on Dec 19, 2009 11:21 PM EST up reply actions

They'll keep trying

But the thumb thing takes away even more value from him, and it will be hard to get any value in return.

by Schulz on Dec 22, 2009 11:54 AM EST up reply actions

question

do you really think that $3 million will mean the difference between him leaving and him being an everyday player? really?

Theo will do what is best for the club. If he was going to play someone else instead of lowell, he’ll splurge a little and pay the extra $3 mill and release lowell (though lowell would be the saddest DFA I’ve ever seen).

Since he needs surgery, I think most likely we find another solution to our problems and either trade him once he’s recovered ( the end of january… not midseason or something), or keep him on the DL until he’s needed.

by wolf9309 on Dec 20, 2009 3:32 AM EST up reply actions

I think,

the most likely scenario is that we try to trade him during spring training if he shows that he can play. I don’t see the Sox DFA’ing him or signing a corner infielder while he’s still on the team. Theo was trying to move him and upgrade at 3B (probably Beltre), but now that that’s unlikely, I think we’ll stick with him. He obviously won’t play every day, but he can still produce with his bat. I see him DHing a lot against lefties and pinch-hitting for Kotch/Lowrie on days that he doesn’t start at third.

by Schulz on Dec 22, 2009 11:59 AM EST up reply actions

Lowell as backup?

I now know that Mike Lowell is coming back this season, but i just dont think he deserves to be here. I know Theo can’t simply release him because he is due a lot of money, but we could use him as a back up. Lowell has screwed any plan of the Red Sox getting a great third or first baseman for next year. Lowell is a waste of money, waste of worry, and a waste of my time. JUST RETIRE!!!! You obviously can’t be accepted any where else, and we dont want you so just retire or assume the backup role. There is no way in heck Lowell starts next year. Ahhhhhhhh!!!!!

Personally, I think maybe you might be a little too hard on Mikey

I mean, the guy was playing hurt. I think to call for his retirement is a bit short sighted and well downright mean. I don’t see the problem with having his bat in the line up. We know what the guy is capable of. Not too long ago he was the talk of our post season.

Just my honest opinion

by Red Sox Raider on Dec 20, 2009 12:13 AM EST reply actions

ya i guess so

ya i mean i just kinda wanted at this point for us to bring in Adrian Gonzalez. It just seems now that Lowell is back that it seems impossible at this point

Congrats on getting Lackey as a pitcher, he’s the Andy Pettitte of durability and reliability. If you guys can get Beckett to bring back his ace stuff next season it’s going to be an exciting 2010 season, as a Yankee fan i always look forward to taking you guys on.

I wish you guys good luck next year, let’s make sure regardless of our competitive nature that we keep the Phillies off the throne.

Youk and Lowell

Lowell is our 3rd baseman until he proves he can’t play. Lowrie is our back up

the difference between a yankee stadium hot dog and a Fenway frank is that they dont sell yankee dogs in October anymore.

Lowell

The medical Report from last year said that it would take a full year for Mike to recover fully from his surgery. That should no longer be an issue and his thumb should be well by Spring training. A healthy Mike Lowell makes the Sox a potent offensive team again and a much better defensive squad. I am a bit annoyed at the willingness to part with one of the team’s better player’s who took less money in his contract to play with the sox. That being said I think the sox should look into signing adam LaRoche to play !B and DH while Youk spells Lowell @ 3B Allowing 4 players to rest every 4th day. Ortiz would get more rest as well as Mike and the Sox go into the stretch with a fairly rested Middle of it’s order and corner infield spots.
