Gammons: Red Sox Offered Matt Holliday 5-Year, $82.5 Deal
Peter Gammons tweets that not only are the Red Sox "ecstatic" about acquiring John Lackey, that they also offered Matt Holliday a five-year, $82.5 million deal:
Boston ecstatic with Lackey. Before he stepped foward, Sox offered 4x$15M to Bay and 5x$16.5 to Holliday.
Holliday's deal is exactly what the Red Sox were able to snag Lackey with. If Holliday wants more than that (and gets more than that), then I am happy with grabbing Lackey and strengthening the defense.
I guess we know where the Red Sox stood in their interest with Jason Bay all along.

Not a huge fan of Holliday
But 5/82.5 would’ve been great.
Building Fenway from the ground up - Virtual Fenway
that's funny
and clearly shows that they had no real intention of going after him since the Cards had reportedly offered more than that already
RE:
There were reports the Sox weren’t interested in Holliday. Maybe they gave him a cheap offer and, if he did accept it, it would have been great. But they were to do nothing more.

I guess it's not likely
To move Ells and Buch for A-Gon, have Cameron in CF, shift Youk to 3b and sign Holliday to LF, but it would have been awesome. I agree Holliday at 5/82.5 would have been great, but that is probably why he didn’t take it.
That would mean the Sox take on a HUGE payroll
It’s already going to be bigger than it ever has. With another $16M+ tacked on, the Sox are approaching Yankee Land.

That's a little upsetting.

We pay guys to play for other teams
We have an ungodly amount of “dead money” tied up.

Only for the next year...
But yeah, it’s still deplorable.
Given retrospective, its hard to believe Theo thought F’Lugo would still be a moderately useful player for the Sox. No, no; he’s a great shortstop – for me to poop on.

Really?
According to Cot’s we have “dead money” tied into three players – 9.25 mil in Lugo, 0.5 mil in Gonzalez buyout and 1 mil in Wagner buyout.
The Lugo thing was a mess I’ll agree but ungodly amount? Wagner netted us a draft pick and Gonzalez’s performance was worth the 0.5 mil buyout.
In addition to prospective "dead money" for Lowell - so approx. $ 19.5MM
Or slightly more than half of the Marlins 2009 payroll

Like any business..
A baseball team’s front office has to practice risk management. It is not only the huge contracts but the insurance policy and premiums to sign this type of contract, the long term plan, and how much flexibility they will have with other contracts locked in, or coming off the books. Combine with how much they can charge in NESN broadcasts and Sox tickets…
The Sox aren’t the Yankees, even the Yankees can’t match their aura at times. The Sox are one of crown jewels of MLB, (The Dodgers and Cubs, just lost much of their glitter) However they have to spend with the resources they have, a smaller media market than Southern California and Chicagoland. (I’ll give the Sox a local market of 14 million, the entire population of New England, give or take a bunch of Yankee fans west of New Haven)
Revenue from NESN is divided a couple ways. Fenway is lucrative but compare to major luxury box seating, which is just ready cash for a team to play with..
Compare to other teams, the Sox are in pretty good shape, they have a wealthy owner, a steady leadership team in place for the past seven/eight years. A fan base most teams would dream of, (Sox fans may be manic depressive and make Dan Shaughnessey look like an optimist, but they are still diehard loyal)
However it is still a business, the Sox are going to paying close to $20 million or more to players no longer on the team, that is $20 million or more not use efficiently, or more money has to be used to pay for the places filled by those players. Whether the Sox have a payroll of $120 million or $140 million, they have to used their money as efficiently as possible.
But it would be for one year only
In theory they’re still looking to add Beltre for 8 or so million. I’m not sure if Ells hit arb yet or is still making the minimum, but an extra 8 million this year for that team over the next five is not a bad deal.
Don't count them out of this market just yet
Like brogs mentioned, the Sox could be lurking and ready to pounce if they can make a deal for Gonzalez. Scutaro to the top of the order?
I’ve been thinking about this, but could the Sox give the Padres Ellsbury and Kelly plus others? We get to keep Buchholz and Westmoreland…
I think Theo has every intention of holding onto Buchholz because he is really close to being what we thought he was going to be. Trading Kelly gives the Padres more service years of a stud pitcher while Ellsbury gives the fans something to relish upon.
For some reason, I really don’t think that Holliday wants to spend the rest of his career in STL. Whether it be the Yankees or Red Sox or whoever, he probably wants to be on an East Coast team.
"Why not us?"
I doubt that Ellsbury + Kelley would be enough.
Maybe at the trading deadline, when A-Gon’s value is possibly lower.
Re: Holliday – that number (5/82.5) is pretty much the max I would have offered Holliday. He’s good, but there are some questions about his ability to put up numbers in the AL.
I wouldn’t be surprised, given their dealings with Boras in the past if Theo figured out his absolute max price for Holliday, offered it to Boras and then walked away once it wasn’t accepted. I don’t think he wanted to waste time playing games because there were other places he could use the money – Lackey, obviously.
Not enough for the Padres, too much for the Sox.
Theo does not trade top pitching talent away easily. We saw it first with Lester, then Buchholz, and probably we’ll see it again with Kelly, too.
I rate the likelihood of a Gonzalez deal including Kelly as especially low, and even more so if Ellsbury is included as part of the package.
every tidbit I've heard
is that Kelley is untouchable. But that’s been said about other folks and in the end everybody has a value.
Personally, while I like Ellsbury – and maybe the nation might revolt – I’d actually rather trade Ells than Buch.
I hate trading away stud pitching prospects. Yeah, yeah, I know sometimes you have to.
I think we're doing the same with Beltre.
If and when we trade Lowell, we’ll offer Beltre a 3-year deal and say ‘take it or leave it’. In the end he’ll have to take it because I don’t think there’s any other suitors for his services that will give him what we will.
I think
We’ve already offered Boras this three year deal, and we’re waiting for Lowell to be gone for him to realize there is no real market for his client an to accept it.
Bay is going to be stuck with the other loser New York team.
Mets are going to regret this as much as they are regretting Oliver Perez and someday the Johan contract.

Holliday is worth more than Lackey
I much rather have Holliday for 82.5M than Lackey. I would even prefer Holliday over Lackey for 2M a year more and an extra year, so 6/108 for Holliday is ihmo a better deal than 5/82.5 for Lackey. Holliday is a 5-6 WAR player while Lackey is a 4 WAR player at best. He is also 16 months younger, hasnt shown any significant signs of decline yet like Lackey and plays a position that has lower risk of injury.
