Lackey's special skill = plunking Derek Jeter

This is the all time leaderboard for hitting Derek Jeter with pitches:

John Lackey - 4

Mike Timlin - 3

Dustin McGowan - 3

Daisuke Matsuzaka, Matt Clement, Bronson Arroyo, Casey Fossum, Rich Garces, Kevin Appier, Denny Bautista, Erik Bedard, Chris Carpenter, Scott Downs, Kelvim Escobar, Chuck Finley, Danny Haren, Scott Kazmir, Rodrigo Lopez, Chuck McElroy, Aaron Myette, Joel Pineiro, David Riske  - 2

Lackey hasn't hit anyone else more than twice, though he did become the Angels franchise leader in career plunks last season, with 73 - passing Chuck Finley.

I'm sure that's not the only reason for the signing though.

More like Pedro than we thought?

I’d pay $ 185MM over five years for this.

Rock me, sexy Jesus...

Pedro only hit Jeter once?

If I had to guess, I would’ve said five times.

Manny ain't the only bad man.

I would have thought so, too...

Maybe the numbers are for the regular season only.

Anyway, Jeter getting plunked by pitches is nothing new. When he bats, he comes about as close to standing on the plate as a batter can without actually standing on the plate. He’s asking to get hit..

And he never moves out of the way.

which means he should be "out"

but the last Ice Age hadn’t started the last time the umpires enforced THAT rule …

(not to mention Youk stands awfully close as well)

Regular season only but...

Yes, the numbers are for the regular season only, but Jeter actually never got plunked by the Red Sox in the postseason. He has 5 postseason HBPs – from Greg Maddux, Schilling (with ARI), Braden Looper, Zito and Gil Heredia.

Pedro does have the postseason record for hitting Miguel Cairo 3 times in one series though. I think Jeter learned early on that Pedro’s pitches were ones he should get out of the way of. Most of the guys who get hit by a lot of pitches learn who not to get hit by.

While we're on the subject,

How many times has Joba hit Youk? Probably not as many as I think, because I kind of remember Youk diving out of the way of balls thrown at his head a couple times. There is some history with those two isn’t there?
