Mike Cameron, Red Sox In 'Serious Talks'
With Jason Bay out of the picture, Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Red Sox and Mike Cameron are in "serious talks" regarding a contract:
Cameron in serious talks with Red Sox on two-year deal. CF or LF unclear.
This would be stage two of the plan entitled: Take Over The World. Cameron, whether he's playing left field or center field, would bring a great glove to the outfield. He'd also provide some pop in the bat.
Let's make a prediction: around $6-$8 million perhaps for Cameron, yearly? Does that sound fair? He is 37 years old, but his defense has proved valuable. His offense might be a nice surprise in Fenway Park as well. Maybe I'm way off the mark. No one has talked any figures in regards to what Cameron wants.

Well, i really do like cameron
But we still would be lacking in the offense department, with the loss (maybe) of lowell and the drop down on bay to cameron.
Obviously Adrian Gonzales would change all that. ;-)

Tell my girlfriend
I have been trying to save all my underwear with holes in them for years. She keeps insisting that I throw them away.
That’s how I became single.
Ouch. Sorry about that man.

I called for Cameron at the start of the offseason.
And given our current payroll, it’s a smart move.

Great deal if it happens
2y at 14 million? Speculation on my part.
Though I am really not a fan of moving Ellsbury to left, UZR ratings aside.
i LOVE it!
By the way Randy, you’re crazy fast. I keep hearing exciting things on MLBTR and on the web and by the time I come here there’s already a post about it.
I'm trying

anyone else feel like we're getting spoiled this offseason?
First the top SS, then the top SP, soon cameron or holliday, and finally either beltre or A-gon. incredible.
Check out my new story.
Payroll is nuts right now.

I'm afraid
they’re already spending 2010’s money. But I love this team so far. I’m more excited than I thought I would be.

Sorry , Can’t Agree With The Possible Cameron Deal . Low Average , 156 k’s , Low RBI’s . Get Real !
GET OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!
No seriously get out. Are you really using average, ks, and RBIs as your stats??? Is it 1994, should we have signed a player hopped on steroids who can mash 40 hrs and play awful defense?
Cameron, despite his age still hits around .350 wOBA the past two years and plays amazing defense. He has averaged 4.2 WAR the past two years.
I don't think that this dude will understand what wOBA is
The guy is speaking about avg and RBIs!!!! Leave him with his ignorance!

Assuming no sarcasm
Let’s not assume he won’t understand. There are many different kinds of people who use average. Not all the unenlightened are willfully so.

first of all this is just baseball. secondly, i’m sure there was a time when you didn’t use advanced stats. you probably learned about them on this website.

REC'D! Big time.
I don’t know shit about stats. By being here, I know a little more than I used to. However, someone also said that I should be banned because I didn’t use stats.

How about this
Cameron is a plus defender at a premium defensive position
run scored=run saved
Cameron has been playing in some EXTREME pitchers parks (PETCO, SAFECO, Shea)
How’s your fever now?

Actually, research has been done to show that runs saved are worth more than runs scored for a high-scoring team.
The Sox aren’t going to be low scoring unless Youkilis falls off a cliff, Martinez goes to hell playing primarily at catcher, JD Drew decides to start swinging at everything, and Dustin Pedroia/Jacoby Ellsbury both go Willie Mays Hayes on us.

I Suspect it Will Cost More
I prefer Cameron over Holliday and Bay, all things considered. But he made $10 million last year, had another very solid season and is arguably the 3rd most attractive FA OF available. I’m guessing closer to 2/18.
There will be a certain faction of Sox fans that will absolutely hate this move if Cameron/Hermida is our LF platoon

And I say....
It’s a much better move than Offering Bay/Holliday the money + 5years or 7 years for the latter. Especially when there are a ton of few agents on the market next year.
LF free agents though?
I also thought next year was particularly deep in pitching, not LFers, with Crawford being the cream of the crop

Agreed
Werth would be great. Not to mention if one of our numerous outfield prospects are ready.
The general consensus of the media
is that the sox are really really pushing to gonzalez.
links?

sorry its speculation, i misheard.
espn and mlb.com both sites have videos of the lackey signing and how the sox have been in talks with padres for gonzalez.

Great News
If Theo adds Gonzalez it was a great off season, if not terrible offseason.
by Brian Daubach on Dec 14, 2009 7:25 PM EST up reply actions
And why would it be ...
A terrible offseason if they don’t get Gonzalez? What if they get Cameron and Beltre to go with Lackey. Wouldn’t that make for a Great offseason?
So Cameron is a Type-_____ FA......
I think I may be a bit obsessive about keeping track of our Draft picks….

If This Leads to AGonz
And we still have Westmoreland after the deal is complete, I’ll very happy. And I’ll hope Kelly and Buch become the studs of San Diego for a decade.
With Gonzalez in the middle of our lineup, Cameron seems like an ideal 7,8 guy. I’d prefer him over Beltre. Both above average with the glove, but the drop from Beltre to Youk doesn’t seem as far as the drop from Cameron to Hermida/Bay, Choice C. And obviously Cameron (who did have a steroid issue, yes?) is superior offensively.
What about the fact that JD Drew plays half the games on the schedule
I have no problem with this move but there’s going to be plenty of days when we have Hermida and Cameron in the line up. I just hope we get Gonzales because the offense will be lacking
Hermida/Cameron
Actually Cameron and Hermida are both pretty good hitters….not great but not exaclty holes in the lineup. They both have some power and can drive the ball
Drew plays half the days on the schedule?
Where is this info coming from?
Because my info says he player 137 games last year. Incidentally, that’s one more game than youk played.
Not Literally
He’s always hurt and sometimes isn’t in the line up against lefties yet is making 14 million.
by Brian Daubach on Dec 15, 2009 12:36 PM EST up reply actions
He's occasionally hurt.
And there’s no reason for him not to be in the lineup against lefties given his >800 OPS against them.
He makes 14 million, he’s worth 20.

I see your point
but it’s baseless gross exaggeration. He’s played a ton most of his years, he’s had a couple of injured ones and is playing through pain a decent amount, but he’s almost always out there.
Not close to overpaid for what he provides to the team.
Wow
what a day
Miguel Cabrera IS the solution to our problems.

Terrible day of the Angles
Now their working on singing Matsui
the angels have to sign jason bay i think
to compete next year. the mariners need offense, so it might come down to those two. and then they’ll battle all year for the division, with figgins having switched sides. that’s pretty juicy.
Angels signing
They signed Matsui to a 1 year deal, think it was for 6.5 mill
I love this idea.

Straight up
What about Papelbon straight up for Gonzalez and let Bard close … save some money, add a good glove and bat. Loose the attitude.
Never happen
Papelbon isn’t worth as much as Adrian, and Padres don’t need an expensive closer for two more years when they still have to find a home for Bell. They would MUCH rather have Bard.

Cameron in. I like it..
Then we just need Beltre.
also expect Theo to unload either Bucholz, Dice-K or Papelbon.
One or two more moves still remain here after Cameron.
Papelbon
Papelbon’s time is short with Boston I believe……I’m betting next off-season if Bard shows what he is capable of
I get that feeling as well
I really thought the Sox would have traded for R. Soriano
MLBTR says he just signed with Boston.

Beat me to it
Let’s hope he can continue his 20+ HR from the past 4 seasons.
Also all the media I’ve read says he’ll play left, but wouldn’t he be better in center and Ellsbury in left?
Yes, Ells has a better UZR in LF.

Small sample size
Plus, long-term Ells’ value lay in CF, I’d worry about displacing him – and possibly stunting his development as a fielder – for a 37 year old who’ll be gone in two years.
Manny ain't the only bad man.
Jason Bay and Matt Holliday have got tto be pissed right now.
zero leverage.
Miguel Cabrera IS the solution to our problems.

Yep
Looks like Bay to the Mets and Holliday back to St. Louis?
I don’t see any other teams really in the mix.
Yea, if anything this might open the door for the Yanks to
low ball Holliday maybe 5/70 or 75.

Love the deal
Our defense was putrid last year….we could have one of the better defensive OFs in baseball now to back up a tremendous starting rotation.
Theo has got to be working on a deal for Adrian Gonzalez or Miguel Cabrera
