Jason Bay Rejects Red Sox's 'Latest' Contract Offer

Jason Bay has rejected the Red Sox's latest offer, but no word what that offer actually was:

Jason Bay rejects Red Sox's latest offer. Agent Joe Urbon: "We have other offers on table that are of greater interest to Jason."

One would think the offer was better than the Red Sox's four-year, $60 million contract they offered originally, but no word on what the new terms were.

Also, the quote by Urbon is a little misleading. This is what he actually means:

"I have other offers on the table that will pay me a lot more money." *

*NOTE: Not actually said by Urbon...

Ok then, let's move on

Apparently, David DeJesus is available: Solid fielder with a league avg bat worth 3.2 WAR signed to a very team friendly contract (4.7 Million for 2010 and a club option for 2011 at 6 million). We could flip Max Ramirez with another prospect to him: Don’t forget that Dayton Moore is running that team!

That story is old

Still talks about Varitek re-signing, Figgins being a FA, etc. I wonder if that’s still the word on the street though…

yeah I've heard that

and he’s a great player, but honestly I just have questions about an all-lefty outfield- and his splits look like he can hit lefties ok, just has absolutely 0 power against them. I guess that wouldn’t be crippling since we’d be fielding an even 4 lefties, 4 righties with one switch hitter. Especially if we get Beltre and he gets his bat back (in my mind, he’s already on the team, I’m gonna be upset if he isn’t).

Probably good if the Royals would take Ramirez+ someone else for him, but I’m guessing the cost would be higher than that, and I think we’d have more potential gains from getting Cameron in for the year.

Dude, we’re talking Dayton moore here! This is the guy who traded for Mike Jacobs AND Betancourt!! The same guy that gave big contracts to Jose Guillen AND Kyle farnsworth!!

this is true

Maybe if we throw in Bowden, he’ll give us Greinke too.

I wonder what the terms were.

I still think he gets 4/72 or 5/80.

And Holliday gets over $100 million.

Manny ain't the only bad man.

I like Jason Bay, but

watching him play the last 1.5 years does not show me a superstar. Why is he able to demand so much from other teams that they will pay. Is he really that superior?? I’d say let him go unless his superstardom is just blossoming??.

by NG on Dec 12, 2009 4:53 PM EST reply actions

I don't see much more blossoming from him.

What you see is what you get. And what you see is a damn good hitter. Not a “superstar,” by any stretch, but if Torii Hunter got 5/90, Bay will get more than 4/65.

Manny ain't the only bad man.

Hunter got a premium for his defense

Or rather, for his “defense” — based on his reputation as a great defensive player. He hasn’t really been very good since 2005. In fact, a couple of years he’s been comparable to Jason Bay.

by RSNexile on Dec 12, 2009 6:37 PM EST up reply actions

agreed

he’s a great hitter, but he’s not the kind of player that you can use as the cornerstone of a contending team.

Greed: an ugly character trait

Both Bay and Holliday couldn’t be treated any better than by the Boston and St. Louis fans, respectively, That – and 60 million dollars for four years – isn’t enough to keep them? They snub their noses and leave for “greener” pastures?

 Pitiful.

I'd rather have NG in LF this year than overpay for Bay.

it’s all about momentum

Hunter?

Really, Uh, Hunter is probably close the hitter that Bay is and when you bring up the other side of the ball – defense…….not even close.

by BobZupcic on Dec 12, 2009 6:14 PM EST reply actions

Hunter

is not close, not by a mile, to the hitter Bay is. However his defense, bas as it is, is not as bad as Bay’s, and he plays a far more important position.

Hunter vs Bay

Bay is a much better hitter than Hunter. And Hunter’s D has fallen down, big time. I’m not saying it’s a perfect comp, but Hunter isn’t worth $30 million more than Bay.

Manny ain't the only bad man.

Bay will get

5/75 in a backloaded Minayaesque albatross contract. So I don’t disagree with you. However in 2006 maybe that is a 5/100 contract.

by Buzzy on Dec 12, 2009 7:08 PM EST up reply actions

$15 million per isn't an Albatross contract

It’s also fairly close to Bay’s value this season. A Vernon Wells-type contract would be an albatross.

"It's just a tiny little nick, but it hurts when I get champagne in there."
- Jason Bay, on getting spiked scoring the winning run in ALDS Game Four.

I think he means albatross by the end

Minaya has a tendency to heavily backload contracts, so by the end if he’s not producing at the level he is now and making $20 mill+, that’s an issue, and everyone will forget the years he was cheaper and more productive. This happens.

But yeah, nothing on the level of a Wells contract.
5/75 in general is fair if they have faith he’ll last 5 years productive. I don’t.

by wolf9309 on Dec 12, 2009 9:13 PM EST up reply actions

yes-

that is what I meant. And he wont be worth 15/5. He had a very good year and was fangraphs(*) worth 15.

(*) An “unnamed” GM stated “that value with respect to replacement only makes sense if I am the replacement…”
