Jason Varitek Will Exercise Player Option

Per NESN:

NESN learned on Monday night that the 37-year-old Varitek will exercise his $3 million player option for 2010 that includes up to another $2 million in incentives. The move is expected to be formalized on Tuesday and will keep Varitek with the Red Sox through at least the end of 2010.

With the incentives, Varitek would earn an additional $400,000 for starting 80 games in 2010 and another bonus for every 10 starts thereafter.

No shocker, but it did seem to come kind of quickly.

So, sadly, does this mean he'll be back next year?

$3m is a lot for a back-up with a weak arm, but the team has to pay it no matter what. Is $3m + whatever the real back-up would make worth it just to let him go? He does hit lefties well, or at least he did.

It's not like I'm saying it to be rude, it's meant as harlmess humor.

Randy, if the implication is I am not welcome, I will go away if you wish.

Financially, he can't do better

But he’s going to end up embarrassing himself. I’d bet on a BA somewhere around the Mendoza Line, with little to no power. And there’s no way he makes the 80 starts he needs to get that performance incentive.

Like a lot of other players who used to be very good or even great, he’s hung around too long.

Do I get the option to donate the money immediately?

1) Catholic church, with a nice note for the pope about some questionable policies
2) US government, similar attachment

catchers named Jason suck

I just commented over on the BCB thread about our bad Jason (Kendall) and remarked that it’s probably good that Tek picked up his option so Doug Melvin wouldn’t try to sign him. Someone had to point out to me, because I didn’t look in my haste to be snarky, that Tek’s OPS for 2009 was higher than Kendall’s. I hate reality. At least the Sox picked up Martinez’s option, and Theo isn’t as wacky as DM and won’t try to sign Kendall too.
