According to a baseball source, the Sox had been engaging with the Brewers in on-and-off discussions involving Hardy since the trading deadline, roughly two weeks before Milwaukee sent the struggling shortstop to the minor leagues. Talks continued up until recently, when the Brewers agreed to send Hardy to the Twins for outfielder Carlos Gomez.
According to the same source, Milwaukee wanted either starter Clay Buchholz or reliever Daniel Bard for Hardy. The Sox were not willing to offer either pitcher. Milwaukee was not interested in righthander Michael Bowden, whom the Sox would have been willing to part with, and the Sox did not have a center field prospect who could match Gomez’s skill set.

A reasonable counteroffer would've been Julio Lugo for Ryan Braun

If we're trading Cardinals players
Why not Carpenter and Pujols for Braun and Prince Fielder?

You've gotta be kidding me!
They equate Gomez to Buchholz and Bard? What a joke.

Although, I'm not sure how to interpret the last line.
Ells < Gomez, or Ells is offlimits?

Yeah, its wierdly worded.
I’d assume that Ells was not available.

I would hope he would be
but my guess is he had less years left at cheap money. I would like to make a bet Josh Reddick totals more value in the next 6 years then Gomez. His bat is terrible and his defense can only make up so much value.

yup.
Gomez seems destined to be a late-inning speed/fielding replacement, so I guess the NL is a good place for him. But asking for Bard or Buch from us and Gomez from the Twins is a little absurd. The only rationalization I can think of is that they wanted a ML ready CF’er, and if they weren’t going to get one, they were going to require a higher price.

I don’t think they’re considering him a prospect at this point

As a GM would you rather have Gomez or Reddick?

Reddick
I think he has much better hitting potential than Gomez.. Although, Gomez has better defense, but Reddick is still in development

Also, how stupid do the Twins look with the return on Santana at this point?
They turned down better offers from MFY and The Red Sox.

I'm not convinced he won't be dealt just yet.
I think there is still a chance.

I dont think
Doug Melvin is generally regarded as one of the smartest GM’s in baseball. If he were, he would have traded Hardy during last years off season, where he could have received a #2 starting pitcher, or a guy like Buchholz. Alcides Escobar’s D was MLB ready at the start of last year, and even if his bat wasnt, he would have been just as valuable as Hardy was in his “down” year.
I was never very high on Hardy, I felt that his 07 and 08 were the aberrations, and that he was grossly overrated defensively, and was outperforming offensively.
The point of all of this is that Doug Melvin is simply out of his mind, and not very smart, if he felt that Hardy was worth either Buchholz or Bard in July of last year. Then again, he was also of the opinion that his team was still in it at that point, with the pitching staff he had assembled, so wanted to hold onto Hardy for all he could get. Sadly, that is what he got for him the other day. Also, if DM had any sense as a GM, and wanted Daniel Bard so badly, he would have been smart enough to draft him in 2006 when he had the chance. You never know though, Jeremy Jeffress may still come out of his drug enduced cloud and become the front line starter they felt he was when they over drafted him by the typical 10 spots for a Brewer first round pick.
Bowden would have been a nice deal for the Brewers, he’s not going to do anything with the Sox, but 4/5ths of the Brewer pitching staff is already bottom of the rotation quality pitchers, so they had no need for him. Hardy just wasnt a good fit for Boston.

I think people are missing the point on the Brewers side
They asked for something that they considered comparable to the benefit of not having to resign Cameron. Gomez allows Mil to not resign him and use that money on FA pitching.
It is either trade for Gomez and add a 10M arm or get Buchholz or Bard and keep Cameron. Bowden just can’t compete with the hole they needed to fill.
