"This was not a blockbuster. This was a value trade, a chance to get a guy with unfulfilled potential at a reasonable cost.
"The last two years, there were high expectations that didn’t come together for him. His performance certainly hasn’t been as good the last two years as it was in 2007. I can tell you that’s the reason we were able to acquire him today. Had he maintained that performance or had linear progression from 2007 to today, there’s no way we would have been trading for him, let alone in this kind of a deal.
"Hermida is a player who hasn’t fulfilled his potential yet. We acquired him today for a reasonable cost to see if he might be able to fulfill that potential with us. He’s somebody who has positive indicators that future performance might be better than his past performance. His minor-league track record, his age, his draft pedigree, our scouting reports over the year indicate there’s a chance that he can turn into the player he was once thought to be.
"Certainly this is a good time to acquire him when his value is a little bit low and to see if with a change of scenery he will be able to fulfill his potential.
"He is somebody who had and we feel may still have considerable promise. This is a player who was highly sought after as an amateur. We liked him in the draft.
"He’s about to move into his prime years. Sometimes talented young players who struggle at the big-league level put it all together and sometimes they don’t. We had a chance to acquire one for what we deemed to be a very reasonable cost."

On word Theo
BABIP. Well, it is not a word, but still. He seemed good in 07 because he was lucky with balls in play. You would think that this FO looks at those things. Positive indicators? How about a linearly decreasing ISO?

Honestly
You have to be blind to think that Theo & Crew HAVEN’T noticed that. These guys are way ahead of the curve. They know 1000x more than any of us do.

Heh, I knew as soon as I saw this I thought to myself "I wonder if Buzzy disagrees with Theo"

yeah well
maybe I am being a bit too harsh. He was a big-time prospect who put up great numbers in AA ball as a 21 year-old. I would just be a bit happier if Theo did not say bullshit like talking about his 07 year as an indicator of anything or positive signs in his recent years. And he is truly horrible in the field.

He's not a good fielder, this much we all know
So he’s not a “defense-first back-up” kinda guy.
But he hits much better on the road compared to at home, and this is a team many have noticed doesn’t hit as well on the road. He has a career wOBA of .336 which isn’t too shabby, and a career OPS+ of 102. Even though his power has gone down every year, last year he upped his walk % and lowered his SO % from the year before, and had a much better OBP.
Assuming he’s not flipped in another deal (still a possibility), his upside in the bat might make the bad defense more tolerable. It’s a risk for Theo, because if he never gets the bat working his defense will look worse and worse, but I wonder if you can pair him with a defense first right-hander as our OF back-up. It certainly wouldn’t be bad, in my opinion, and if he can make any progress with the bat, ta da, we get a tremendous return for one current reliever and one future reliever.

Oh, and this is incredibly small sample size of course...
But he has a career 295/371/485 in interleague play. Again, much like his home/road splits it doesn’t necessarily make this a good move, but it adds credence to Theo’s idea that there’s potential value in there, somewhere

Might be trying to get some of the less-informed fans off his back.

Who knows
maybe we just grabbed the next Carlos Quentin. Or Carlos Pena. Sometimes these guys just develop late. Put him around some veteran hitters – Youk, Drew, Papi – and he could snap into it.
I wouldn’t bank on it, but in the grand scheme, $2 m is nothing.

The problem is
theams like the Rays and the WS can have the patience to find out. I doubd the Sox would ever give such an experiment a try. As a bench player his awful defense is a handicap.

Theo got Hermida to flip him.
I’m almost positive of it. Quotes like this is just polish.
