The Red Sox have reportedly acquired Florida Marlins outfielder Jeremy Hermida:

The Boston Red Sox have acquired outfielder Jeremy Hermida from the Florida Marlins for minor-league left-handers Hunter Jones and Jose Alvarez.

Hermida hit .258 with 13 home runs with 47 RBIs for the Marlins last season. Florida drafted Hermida as the 11th pick in the first round of the 2002 draft.

Jones, 25, was 4-3 with a 4.25 ERA in 36 appearances for Triple-A Pawtucket last season. He had 9.24 ERA in 11 appearances in two major-league stints with the Red Sox.

Interesting move by the Sox here. Hermida could potentially replace Jason Bay in left field, but there would certainly be a drop in numbers between Bay and Hermida. However, Hermida does have a lot of potential -- that's been the word on him for a few years. Could he break out in Boston? Does Theo Epstein think a full-time gig for Hermida could be a cheap cure for left field? It's possible. Or, Hermida will just be a backup outfielder with, potentially, Rocco Baldelli.

We'll have more on this trade soon.

Leverage against Bay/Holliday, 4th OF, or flipped in a later trade

Pick one of the above, you’ve got a decent shot of being right. He’s had potential for a while, but has never lived up to it. He’s bad defensively in RF, so he’s probably a LFer in the future. He’s also a lefty, which doesn’t make the best matchup as a back-up to a guy like J.D. Drew, but if you can pair him up with a defense-first guy as a back-up to the back-up, it could work.

A very strange move right here.

If this is Bay’s replacement, I will drink myself into a coma.

No way is this our new left fielder.

by Justin_Bobo on Nov 5, 2009 6:15 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I certainly hope not.

I would be alright with him as a 4th OF I suppose. I do like Rocco, but he can’t stay healthy.

I'm with you, gizmo

I think a righty 4th OF is the way to go, with Drew and Ells hitting from the left side. Hopefully, this is a prelude to a larger trade (Gonzalez?). Hermida is a cost-controlled Major League player. Hermida was very good in 2007, but hasn’t done much since.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Supposedly his numbers away from Joe Robbie stadium are far better than at home.

I only looked up last year overall and was not impressed. Also, I hear he made 9 errors in 2007 Quite the butcher this son of a bitch it would appear we have on our hands. no chance he can play RF in Fenway if he is that bad with the glove.

You would have to be crazy to think he would ever be a full-time starter. He’s clearly here as some bench help or as trade bait.

I don't understand this trade at all

Unless it is part of a trade to be made soon.

by drabidea on Nov 5, 2009 6:30 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

It could be anything, really

They have all off-season to do something with him, whether it’s keep him or trade him. The more I look at it he doesn’t make a ton of sense as our 4th OFer, who should be a right-hander, but whatever.

Coco Crisp as a 4th OF would have been better

He’s about to be available.

I can

Lots of players, really. David Ortiz would be a worse 4th OFer. Hermida walks a good amount and could be a back-up platoon with Baldelli. Would certainly get more out of the bat from him than from Brian Anderson

Probably not with the upside of Hermida

I don’t understand why you hate this move so much. We didn’t give up anything we’ll miss dearly, and Hermida has more upside than most guys you’d normally give a 5th OFer spot to.

I also don’t understand the money argument. It’s not like it’s some albatross contract, he’ll probably make just a bit more than he made last year. The Sox can take on that salary to have a good back-up OFer who platoons with a guy like Baldelli. It’s not like Coco Crisp is going to be walking through that door anytime soon.

They all served purpose though (except Duncan)

The Sox got Anderson for a good defensive outfielder off the bench. Check. They got Gathright for speed. Check. They serve their purposes.

Exactly

If we are going to pay 2+ mil and trade away players we should atleast get someone who can play defense as well as upside.

I mean most likely he was going to get non-tendered.

by drabidea on Nov 5, 2009 8:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That reminds me, Hermida was one of Olney's candidates to be non-tendered

I wonder if Theo will try and low-ball some teams for potential non-tenders in order to strike it rich with one of them. Hermida first, maybe Hardy next, who else?

No, he's not Bay's replacement

but, even though he’s lefty, he does hit to left center more than right, which would help him in Fenway. Florida is also a pitcher’s park so this could potentially maximize his value here if we keep him.

Gathright (and Nick Green) got outrighted to Pawtucket today, too, so this could be the fifth OF (presuming Baldelli stays).

Also, I thought he was supposed to be pretty reliable defensively.

by dsharp on Nov 5, 2009 7:11 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

He's subpar defensively

UZR/150 of -11.3 this year, -8.9 for his career. Those are similar figures to Bobby Abreu’s, who folks around here think is an abysmal outfielder; I’m a little more charitably inclined.

But while I could live with a leftfielder with fielding numbers like those — we put up with Jason Bay there, right? — I’d want to see far better offensive numbers to make up for the liability in the field. Like the kind of numbers you’d get from guys like Jason Bay or Bobby Abreu. Hermida really only makes sense as a backup, and he’s an expensive one at that.

by RSNexile on Nov 5, 2009 7:20 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Hmm....I don't know.

Must be the potential Theo likes. He saw potential in Smoltz, Rocco, Penny, and now Hermida. Any trends people? This doen’t make sense to me.

Every scout in the game saw potential in Hermida.

He was a top prospect a few years back.

by USG on Nov 6, 2009 3:36 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I can safely say that I didn't see this coming.

Who knows? Maybe he comes through on that aforementioned “potential”, maybe not. Jones and Alvarez are no great loss, to be sure, and it gives us a younger, more reliable 4th OF at the worst.

by USG on Nov 5, 2009 8:21 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Must be some peripherals we're missing

Or something else they see. Seems like one of those low-risk, moderate reward moves.
